Join us at Hill Center for a discussion of New York Times bestselling author Alex Kershaw’s recently published book, Against All Odds, moderated by Kelly Kennedy, an award-winning journalist and former U.S. Army soldier.

Alex Kershaw’s Against All Odds: A True Story of Ultimate Courage and Survival in World War II (Dutton Caliber; on sale March 22, 2022) tells the untold story of four of the most decorated soldiers of World War II, all Medal of Honor recipients. Kershaw, an expert historian and master storyteller, provides a compelling, exhilarating account of the heroic actions of Maurice “Footsie” Britt, Michael Daly, Keith Ware, and Audie Murphy recounting their bravery from the beaches of French Morocco to Hitler’s mountaintop fortress.

Alex Kershaw is the author of numerous books on World War II, including the New York Times best-sellers The Bedford Boys and The Longest Winter. His 2012 book, The Liberator: One World War II Soldier’s 500-Day Odyssey from the Beaches of Sicily to the Gates of Dachau was made into a drama series aired by Netflix in 2020. A graduate of University College, Oxford, England, Kershaw’s journalism has appeared in many magazines and newspapers since 1990, and he has also worked as a screenwriter and in television, penning an award-winning 2004 documentary on Bobby Kennedy. He is an honorary colonel in the 116th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division.

Since 2012, Kershaw has led several battlefield tours of Europe and he will be leading a tour of London, Normandy, and Paris for the Friends of the National World War II Memorial in June 2022. Kershaw’s book, The First Wave: The D-Day Warriors Who Led the Way to Victory in World War II, was published in 2019 to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day and was a national best-seller. Kershaw serves as a member of the Friends of the National World War II Memorial’s Board of Directors.

Kelly Kennedy, an award-winning journalist, was embedded in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and served as Military Reporters & Editors’ first female president. She is the only American woman to have both served in combat in the U.S. Army in the Middle East and Mogadishu, Somalia and covered U.S. combat as a civilian.

Kennedy is the best-selling author of They Fought for Each Other: The Triumph and Tragedy of the Hardest Hit Unit in Iraq, and the co-author of Kate Germano’s Fight Like a Girl: The Truth Behind how Female Marines are Trained. She now edits and ghostwrites books, and serves as the managing editor for The War Horse.

Kennedy is a Michael Kelly award finalist, and, in 2021, received a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award and a national Edward R. Murrow award as part of The War Horse team. She spent several years at USA TODAY covering the Affordable Care Act, as well as veterans’ issues such as Gulf War Illness and the burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan.
