All Politics is Local with Tom Sherwood & Mark Segraves: DC Councilmember Elissa Silverman

Monday, February 11 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Tom Sherwood and Mark Segraves return to Hill Center for an in-depth conversation with Elissa Silverman, DC Councilmember, At-Large.

Elissa Silverman has dedicated her career to making the District of Columbia and its government more accountable, responsive and accessible to residents. She first learned the city as a reporter, spending a decade writing stories about the District for publications including Washington City Paper and the Washington Post. She later switched careers to focus on public policy and budget advocacy as an analyst with the DC Fiscal Policy Institute. The next big career change came in November 2014, when she was elected to serve as an independent at-large member of the D.C. Council.

As a Council member, Elissa has focused on making District government work for working families. She has championed implementation of a paid family and medical leave program in the District, funded career programs for adult learners, increased investments in early childhood and before-and-after- school programs, and remained a firm believer in public schools as the great equalizer. Elissa has also fought to make DC affordable for all by prioritizing money for affordable housing and initiatives to end homelessness.

Tom Sherwood is a veteran local journalist.  He is the “Resident Political Analyst” for the popular Politics Hour on Friday’s with WAMU host Kojo Nnamdi.  Tom also is a contributing writer with The Washington City Paper.  Tom was the lead political reporter for NBC4 for nearly 3 decades and formerly worked for The Washington Post.  He is co-author with Harry Jaffe of “Dream City,” a Simon & Schuster book on the history of the District and the rise and fall of Marion Barry.  Tom is a frequent guest speaker and moderator at a variety of events in the District.

Mark Segraves is a reporter for NBC 4 News, Host of NewsPlus on DC 50 TV, and Senior Correspondent for WNEW Radio. Segraves is a DC native who lived in Ward 6 for 15 years just blocks from Hill Center. Segraves is a former writer for Voice of the Hill and The Hill Rag. He is the father of two boys who both attend DCPS schools. He’s covered District affairs for more than 15 years.
