EAST welcomes back for our fall season Sarah Jones of SANAA Design! The kids will use clay to create works of art telling stories about the strength of the people of Ukraine. Using the Ukrainian flag’s colors and facts about Ukrainian culture, Sarah will show how art can lift the spirits of those who most need it. Kids will also have the option to donate their artwork to a nonprofit in the DC area servicing refugee families.
About Sarah: Sarah Jones (B. 1990) is a self-taught artist, with a studio practice in Virginia. She has set a goal to donate her craft to at least one good-doing organization each year. The past two years, she’s worked with jonesgarden.org in Virginia, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing access to fresh organic produce for families. She designed their first community garden, and worked with students and local artists to create and install two murals to accent the garden. Before that, she donated her services to robinsnestchildrenshome.org in Montego Bay, Jamaica for 4 consecutive years (2016-2019) installing murals at their orphanage and carrying out youth workshops with the children there. She also donated her services to the Boys and Girls Clubs in Virginia, and the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank in Virginia to uplift their facilities with bright murals. See her website here: https://sanaa-designwalls.weebly.com/volunteer-work.html#/. Most recently, Sarah volunteered at Hill Center for a workshop with the Young Marines. Sarah, the daughter of a USAF veteran, led the group through a clay project. After the group learned about Naval and Marine awards, she led them through creating their own ribbon award based on their story.
In her youth, she recognized a sense of familiarity with the arts and constantly found ways to cultivate that creative desire. Jerome Jones, her father, and a talented painter was her model of perfection on the canvas. She started her professional career in the culinary field as a pastry chef and obtained a degree in business. All the while continuing to translate those experiences into growing her artistic craft. She uses her knowledge from her culinary training to develop unconventional artists’ methods and push the limits. Texture and culture are weaved into her art through the inspirations of her world travels and the wonders of nature. She is currently a full-time artist and facilitates instructional sessions on painting and sculpting through various platforms.
The Eastern Market Art Series & Teachings – EAST – is an ongoing series that brings artists and children (between 6 and 10 years old) together to explore a different craft or medium each month. Each workshop has volunteer opportunities for youth & teens (11 years old and up) to help support the workshop. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Our program is made possible by the Near Southeast Community Partners and the CSX Mitigation Fund.
