In honor of International Women’s Day, EAST is thrilled to introduce a new female artist to our lineup: Simone Agoussoye! Simone is a Washington, DC native and skilled portrait painter and contemporary artist. Simone’s latest series, “Black Beauty,” celebrates Black bodies through the art of portrait creation. Kids will learn to blend portrait creation while also celebrating an iconic member of the Black community to paint. Families will be provided supplies including canvas, paint, paintbrushes, and further DIY supply instructions from Simone. This in partnership with SWAG Works, an art class and workshop series in DC.

Stay tuned for details on supply pick-up!

Washington, DC-born artist Simone Agoussoye has been honing her skills in portrait artistry for the past several years. Known for her creative depictions of people—most often icons in music, pop culture, history, and the arts—Simone blends her traditional skills in portraiture with fresh, unique, and unconventional techniques transforming her from a realistic fine artist to more of a contemporary artist.

From a young age, Simone was always creating and painting something. Her parents were very supportive when it came to Simone’s artistic expressions. Her grandmother also had a major influence on her interest in art. At the age of 7, Simone knew that when she grew up, she wanted to be an artist and ever since then made conscious choices that led her to become the artist that she is today. Throughout her journey, her work has been inspired by artists like Picasso, Frida Kahlo, andy Warhol, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

SWAG Works DC provides art classes and workshops to residents throughout the DC area. They offer a multifaceted and thriving community a complete arts destination. Their visual art workshops inspire youths, teens, and adults to tap into their creative abilities. Selected professional local artists from various backgrounds share their creative passions and teachings to community residence throughout the Metropolitaiona rea. SWAG holds workshops at art centers, senior wellness centers, schools, and other business locations throughout the DC area.

The Eastern Market Art Series & Teachings – EAST – is an ongoing series that brings artists and children (between 6 and 10 years old) together to explore a different craft or medium each month. Each workshop has volunteer opportunities for youth & teens (11 years old and up) to help support the workshop. Please contact hillcentereast@gmail.com for more information.

Our program is made possible by the Near Southeast Community Partners and the CSX Mitigation Fund as well as the Capitol Hill Community Foundation.
