Join us for a combined art history and studio arts workshop with Dr. Joanne Allen, Professor at American University. This class is perfect for students who are new to art and love history or experienced artists who want to try something new! Students will learn about the origins of complex geometric patterns used to decorate medieval mosques in the Islamic world. Using a pair of compasses and a ruler you will create a repeating interlaced geometric design to better understand this amazing art form.

This is also a great workshop for students are skilled in science/engineering with an artistic interest!

Art History components:
-Learn about the history and meaning of Islamic geometric patterns and the media used to create them (ceramics, woodcarving, mosaic, etc)
-Learn about mosque architecture and decoration

Studio Art components:
-Use of a pair of compasses and ruler to create a repeating geometric design
-Thickening the lines and creating an interlace
-Designing or copying a tile design

This is an adult art class and all materials are included.

Dr. Joanne Allen is an artist and art historian. She teaches Art History at American University and has published a book, articles, and book chapters on medieval and Renaissance art and architecture. As a professional artist, she primarily sells hand-pulled prints, often with architectural subjects. She has taught workshops combining art and art history for her students and for community groups and is excited to offer them to the general public!

A minimum of 4 students is required for the class to occur. Students will be notified if the minimum is not met.
