Workshop Leader: Dr. Michelle LaFrance

Creative nonfiction is a broad genre of narrative prose that includes personal essays, memoir, portraits and profiles, travel writing, long form journalism, literary journalism and more. Pieces typically mix the factual and the highly personal, marrying research, memory, the poetic and the playful.

Students in this course will read short examples of the genre, discuss the elements of writing that make for evocative and meaningful nonfiction and learn about writing and publishing strategies. Pitched toward those who are just beginning to write, each student will leave with the beginnings of a “flash creative nonfiction” piece that they can continue to develop toward publication. Instructor is published in poetry, creative nonfiction and academic journals and has been teaching writing, editing and writing instruction for 18 years.

Please bring a lined journal/notebook, a pen and your most creative self.
