SUMMARY:American Roots Concert Series: Justin Golden & The Devil's Coattails
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register Here \nWe are delighted and grateful to welcome Justin Golden & The Devil’s Coattails to Hill Center for a rare performance. \nWith roots in the Mississippi Delta\, Chicago\, and the Piedmont of Virginia\, Richmond-based guitarist and songwriter Justin Golden’s origins are deeply vested in the blues. First picking up the guitar at age 19\, Golden did what came naturally and let the music flow through him. With an extremely diverse musical palette\, Golden aims to bring some new ideas to traditional blues forms. \nAt the age of 34\, a shocking Stage IV Cancer diagnosis in January of 2025 left Golden in a place of uncertainty\, fear and doubt. After more than a decade of intense touring\, recording\, and honing his craft\, Golden was forced to take an extended respite from musician life. He instead dedicated his time to manage chemotherapy treatments\, appointments\, and navigating the health insurance establishment. For most of 2025\, Golden had barely enough energy to play one local show each month. Although he still plays extremely limited tours as symptoms allow\, Golden’s treatment will be ongoing for the foreseeable future. Golden states that he “truly couldn’t have made it through 2025 without the support of [his] community.” \n \nThanks to all our sponsors: \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Global Sounds on the Hill Featuring ALASH\, Masters of Tuvan Throat Singing
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register Here“Utterly stunning…audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.” \n– The Washington Post \nCurated and hosted by iconic DC impressario and musician Jim Thomson \nALASH are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. Trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood\, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing in international xöömei competitions\, both as an ensemble and as individuals. At the same time\, they paid close attention to new trends coming out of the West. They have borrowed new ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music\, but they have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effort to make their music more hip. Alash first toured the U.S. under the sponsorship of the Open World Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then they have returned many times\, to the delight of American audiences. ALASH has twice performed at Hill Center — two of the most singular\, electric and enthralling concerts we’ve ever presented. This will sell out\, so purchase your tickets early. \n\n\n \nAbout Jim Thomson: Jim Thomson is an independent DIY music producer based in Washington DC who specializes in booking\, live music production\, artist management\, DJ events\, and record releases. In Washington DC he operates an ongoing live music series called Secret Planet DC that partners with various venues\, foundations\, and musicians all across the city to produce unique\, intimate\, and meaningful performances. He also owns and operates the Washington\, DC-based boutique record label Electric Cowbell Records as well as holding down and curating all vinyl DJ residencies at The Green Zone\, Cana\, La Shukran\, Daikaya\, Le Mont Royal\, Eaton Hotel\, the DC Record Fair\, and other bars and restaurants in the city. \nJim is also a lifelong musician and promoter\, playing drums as a founding member of GWAR\, The Alter-Natives (SST Records)\, Bio Ritmo\, CSC Funk Band\, Time Is Fire\, and he currently plays drums and percussion with Motherf*ckers JMB & Co with Geologist from Animal Collective. One of the first concerts he co-promoted was a Bad Brains show in Richmond\, Virginia in 1987 followed by years of concerts including surf guitar legend Dick Dale\, Knitting Factory tours\, Marc Ribot\, Charles Gayle\, Negativland\, Medeski\, Martin\, and Wood\, and many others.

SUMMARY:Acclaimed Irish\, Scottish\, and American Folk duo Rakish in Concert
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereHill Center is beyond thrilled to welcome back Maura Shawn Scanlin and Conor Hearn who comprise Rakish.\nTheir previous two concerts here sold out quickly\, so be sure to purchase your tickets early. \nRooted in tradition with an ear toward the future\, contemporary folk duo Rakish embodies earnest musical exploration and demonstrates an infectious playfulness on stage. In their sound together\, it is evident the two friends share an unbridled love for the traditional sounds of Celtic and American music\, and the tight ensemble of a group with years of collaboration under their belt. Strings Magazine says: “Explorative and versatile\, the duo draws evident inspiration from not just the deep and wide history of Scottish and Irish Celtic composition\, but also the precision-focused structures of classical chamber music and a whole array of improvisational styles.” \nKnown for her toneful and award-winning fiddle playing in the Celtic music world\, Maura Shawn Scanlin grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Maura is a 2-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and a winner of the Glenfiddich Fiddle Competition in Scotland. Her clawhammer banjo playing and songwriting\, also featured in the duo\, hold the regional music of her homeland close. Maura finds her niche combining influences from a widespread musical journey with the sounds she grew up around. \nSteeped in the Irish music communities of Washington D.C. and Baltimore\, MD where he was raised\, acclaimed guitarist Conor Hearn developed a keen interest in literary theory and poetry\, a unique well of material from which he draws unending musical inspiration. His settings of modernist poems\, like James Joyce’s Chamber Music\, epitomize the duo’s approach: the dexterous alchemy of the old and the new into something wholly Rakish. A keenly sought-after collaborative guitarist\, Conor performs with many of the most renowned names in Celtic music today. His guitar style combines bass and rhythm for a uniquely powerful and precise sound. \nRakish\, embracing the unconventional connotation of their namesake\, create and perform music with verve. Recent highlights of their travels include performances at the Library of Congress\, Celtic Colours International Music Festival\, Prince Edward Island’s Festival of Small Halls\, the Corvallis Celtic Festival\, and Official Showcases at Folk Alliance International. They have taught at esteemed fiddle camps across the country including Alasdair Fraser’s Sierra Fiddle Camp\, Folk College\, Katie McNally’s Boston States Fiddle Camp\, and Hanneke Cassel’s Pure Dead Brilliant Fiddle Weekend. \nOn Now\, O Now\, the duo’s sophomore release (out October 11\, 2024) it is clear Rakish cannot be pigeonholed into one genre and is most comfortable occupying the in-between. Together they journey through Celtic and Americana styles\, deftly showcasing how to bring forth something new from the deep well of tradition. They are touring their new album across the country throughout the fall of 2024 and into 2025.

SUMMARY:Stone Room Concerts @ Hill Center Featuring Eastern-European Jewish Folk Music with Seth Kibel & The Kleztet
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereSeth Kibel & The Kleztet will entertain and delight with a program focused on upbeat klezmer music (Eastern-European Jewish folk music) along with some detours into Yiddish folk song\, jazz\, swing\, and the Great American Songbook. Think the Brothers Gershwin\, Irving Berlin\, Jerome Kern\, Duke Ellington\, Benny Goodman\, and more! Seth and his band will have your toes a-tappin’ and make you want to dance in the aisles. Historical commentary (some of which might actually be true) and humorous anecdotes from Kibel will provide an insightful context for their selections. \nKlezmer\, which literally means “tool of song” in Yiddish\, is the secular folk music of the Jews of Central and Eastern Europe. In the first decades of the 1900s\, this music flourished not only in the Old World but also in the New\, in the immigrant community of New York City. There\, the sounds of the European “fiddler on the roof” mixed with the sounds of early jazz and Tin Pan Alley. The result was a quintessentially American sound. \n \nSeth Kibel is one of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier woodwind specialists\, working with some of the best bands in klezmer\, jazz\, swing\, and more. Wowing audiences on clarinet\, flute\, and saxophone\, Seth has made a name for himself in the Washington/Baltimore region and beyond. He is a featured performer with The Kleztet\, Bay Jazz Project\, Music Pilgrim Trio\, Daryl Davis Band\, The Natty Beaux\, and more. Winner of 28 Washington Area Music Awards (Wammies)\, including “Best World Music Instrumentalist” (2003-11) and “Best Jazz Instrumentalist” (2005\, 2007-8\, 2011-14). His most recent recording\, “Clown with a Stick\,” was released in May 2023 on the Azalea City Recordings record label. He’s won numerous prizes in the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest (MASC) including the Grand Prize in 2016 and a Gold Prize in 2022. When he’s not performing\, Seth lectures on music history for numerous institutions\, including the Osher Lifelong Learning programs at Johns Hopkins and Towson Universities. In addition to Kibel\, the band features Sean Lane — piano\, Derek Wiegmann — double bass\, and Joey Antico — double bass. \nDavid Holiday\, a lifelong music aficionado \, founded Stone Room Concerts together with his wife in 2012 to bring intimate\, high-quality performances by local\, national\, and international independent musicians to the DMV area. He has curated and hosted well over 200 concerts over the past decade in his home\, churches\, and Hill Center.

SUMMARY:Global Sounds on the Hill Featuring Qais Essar & Sonny Singh in Concert: SANGAT
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereCurated and hosted by iconic DC impresario and musician Jim Thomson \nWeaving together the ancient sound and haunting melodies of the rabab\, a 2\,500 year-old instrument from Afghanistan\, with bold trumpet lines and anthemic Punjabi vocals\, Qais and Sonny ground their music in ancestral wisdom and usher us into the future with their uplifting new sound. Drawing inspiration from hundreds of years old mystical poetry from the Sikh\, Sufi\, and radical bhakti traditions\, their music centers oneness and connection in times of increasing division and hierarchy. Sangat is not only a meeting of diverse musical and spiritual traditions\, but also a reflection of using art as a vehicle for connection\, resistance\, and healing. “Sangat is a term Sikhs use to refer to beloved community\,” explains Singh. “We often use the term to refer to the congregation in a gurdwara [Sikh house of worship]\, but to me\, sangat is something much broader. My beloved community transcends ethnic\, religious and national boundaries.” Essar adds\, “In this climate of increasing attacks on the marginalized\, including the communities Sonny and I are a part of\, we hope this new music inspires solidarity and unity.” \nAbout Jim Thomson: Jim Thomson is an independent DIY music producer based in Washington DC who specializes in booking\, live music production\, artist management\, DJ events\, and record releases. SUMMARY:“SONG OF SOLSTICE" A Celtic Christmas Celebration Featuring: OCEAN Celtic Quartet
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register Here“Listen up – They’re good!” \n–Fairport Convention’s Simon Nicol \nFairport Convention’s Simon Nicol says that OCEAN are exciting because they “get right inside the spirit of the folk music of the British Isles\, unpick it and weave it into a bright new fabric on their own 21st century American loom.” Tony Barrand of Nowell Sing We Clear praises their “beautiful original songs and fabulous arrangements of traditional songs.” Steeleye Span’s Maddy Prior calls their songwriting “stunning” and the Washington Post calls them “Nothing short of spellbinding.” \nThe OCEAN Celtic Quartet will transport you to the Yuletide celebrations of yore in a program featuring time-honored carols\, 19th century broadside songs\, traditional Celtic tunes\, original seasonal compositions\, and even an appearance by Father Christmas of the old mummers plays! With their soaring vocals and stately Celtic instrumentals\, OCEAN is known for marrying lighthearted exuberance with great spiritual depth in a program that appeals to all faiths and wisdom traditions. Come in good voice\, as you’ll be invited to sing along! \nSo come on out and celebrate the magic of Christmas and the Winter Solstice in cozy fellowship. This boisterous concert will include British Mummer’s play recitations\, traditional English and French carols\, fiddle\, harp\, and hurdy-gurdy tunes\, 19th century broadside songs\, and original seasonal compositions celebrating both the joy of the season of light and the introspection of the dark half of the year. The OCEAN Celtic Quartet is led by composer and ethnomusicologist JENNIFER CUTTING (accordion and keyboards)\, a Washington Area Music Association “Musician of the Year” and “Songwriter of the Year.” OCEAN features the stunning vocalist LISA MOSCATIELLO (also a WAMA “Musician of the Year”)\, folklorist/vocalist/percussionist STEPHEN WINICK\, plus fiddler\, Celtic harpist\, and composer JAY ANSILL. Cutting’s original anthem\, “Song of Solstice\,” has become a classic on Celtic and Folk radio\, and the title cut of OCEAN’s newest CD\, “The Turning Year\,” reached #1 Song on the Folk Radio charts for December 2021. Come prepared to sing along with OCEAN on these and other seasonal songs ancient and modern! \n \nJENNIFER CUTTING (Artistic Director\, Keyboard\, Accordion) happily blends careers as a bandleader\, composer\, instrumentalist\, ethnomusicologist\, and record producer. In the early 80s\, she became the last and youngest protégée of British folk revival leader A.L. Lloyd\, who had previously mentored members of Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span. Cutting spent 10 years as leader of The New St. George\, one of the most significant British folk-rock groups on this side of the Atlantic. She then created and produced the award-winning CDs OCEAN: Songs for the Night Sea Journey\, Song of Solstice\, and Waves\, collaborating with international superstars such as Maddy Prior and Peter Knight (Steeleye Span)\, Annie Haslam (Renaissance)\, Dave Mattacks (Fairport Convention) Tony Cuffe (Ossian) and Troy Donockley (Iona [UK]). Cutting is a multiple award winner in all areas of her musical career. She has won over 20 WAMMIE awards\, including “Musician of the Year\,” “Songwriter of the Year\,” and “Best New Artist\,” as well as “Album of the Year\,” “Best Traditional Folk Recording” and “Best Contemporary Folk Recording.” She has won two Maryland Governor’s Citations for composition\, as well as prestigious national-level songwriting awards such as First Prize in songwriting at the Merle Watson Festival\, and American Songwriter Magazine’s Song of the Year. \nLISA MOSCATIELLO (Vocal\, Guitar\, Penny Whistle) is a smooth\, sultry folk contralto from the Washington\, DC area. She has won over two dozen Washington Area Music Awards\, including two of the coveted Album of the Year awards for Second Avenue and Trouble from the Start. Although her first love is traditional Irish\, Scottish\, English and Anglo-American traditional folk music\, her voracious appetite for beautiful melodies and mysterious\, heart-rending lyrics has led her far afield from what is normally considered “folk music\,” into jazz\, electronica\, country\, Italian pop music and even opera. In addition to singing with the OCEAN Celtic Quartet\, she performs as a solo artist. As part of a duo with cellist Fred Lieder\, she performed monthly at 49 West for many years\, and also recorded for the electronica project Arthur Loves Plastic. She is the former lead singer for Celtic fusion band Whirligig and British folk-rock band The New St. George\, and has recorded and toured with fiddler Rosie Shipley. \nSTEPHEN WINICK (vocals\, percussion) specializes in traditional ballads and sea chanteys\, and is both a performer and an expert lecturer and teacher\, bringing a scholarly depth to OCEAN’s concerts and educational programs. Steve has been singing traditional songs in English and French since his childhood. In the early 1990s\, he spent several summers under the tutelage of the late Dublin ballad singer Frank Harte\, one of the foremost traditional ballad singers in Irish music. Steve is a member of Ship’s Company Chanteymen\, in which he performs a repertoire of sea chanteys and historical songs. He was engaged as an expert scholar and researcher for the 2008 Washington Christmas Revels\, which presented the music of Québec. He ended up also performing one of the lead roles in the show\, for which he sang traditional songs in French to an audience of thousands. He reprised his role on the 2010 CD release Le Temps des Fêtes\, and in the same year appeared on OCEAN’s CD Song of Solstice. He has a Ph.D. in Folklore and Folklife from the University of Pennsylvania\, where he studied under song specialists Kenneth S. Goldstein and Roger Abrahams. He has taught courses in folklore and folksong at the University of Pennsylvania\, George Washington University\, and George Mason University. \nJAY ANSILL (Violin\, Celtic Harp\, Hurdy Gurdy) is a multi-instrumentalist\, composer and producer based in Bucks County\, Pennsylvania. He has toured extensively and performed a wide variety of music with a wide variety of musicians including Anne Hills\, Martin Carthy\, Johnny Cunningham\, Bill Keith\, J. “Mo’ong” Santoso Pribadi and Maria Del Mar Bonet. Jay has written music for theater\, most notably working with playwright/director Lee Breuer at Mabou Mines on a number of projects and with John Guare on his Lydia Breeze Trilogy. Jay has released several albums including A Lost World\, a critically acclaimed collection of settings of poems by Robert Graves\, and Fragile Gifts\, with singer-songwriter Anne Hills.

SUMMARY:Global Sounds on the Hill Featuring Joe Troop's Whirlwind
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register Here“…some of the most unusual music I’ve ever heard: polyglot internationalist banjo player Joe Troop and his latest group Whirlwind\, a lineup featuring flute\, viola\, jazz-adjacent rhythm section and electric banjo that often sounded a lot more like a guitar. It was something like gypsy jazz leaning in all sorts of unexpected directions\, very hard to describe — a super-group jam with the late Frank Zappa coming back from the great beyond to sit in with Punch Brothers and Jens Kruger\, maybe?” \n– David Menconi\, music writer and author \nCurated and hosted by iconic DC impresario and musician Jim Thomson \nJoe Troop is a GRAMMY-nominated multi-instrumentalist\, singer\, and songwriter hailing from the Piedmont. He is one half of the acclaimed panamerican folk duo Larry & Joe\, and founder of Latingrass stringband Che Apalache. His music is deeply inspired by a decade living in Buenos Aires and traveling throughout Latin America and the world. \nNow clad with his long-awaited custom electric jazz banjo\, he’s curated an unexpected ensemble featuring flute (Rebecca Kleinmann)\, viola (Bailey Newman)\, drums (Gaston Reggio) and bass (Ramon Garcia) to bring to life a new concept album called “Whirlwind.” \nDrawing from a kaleidoscope of influences – Latin jazz to R&B\, candombe to bluegrass\, classical music to samba\, rock and roll – this group will surely keep you on the edge of your seat. \n \nAbout Jim Thomson: Jim Thomson is an independent DIY music producer based in Washington DC who specializes in booking\, live music production\, artist management\, DJ events\, and record releases. SUMMARY:Stone Room Concerts @ Hill Center Featuring Alt/Indie Singer/ Songwriter Megan Burtt
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register Here“Delightfully expressive\, expansive\, and pleasing\, with Witness\,\nMegan Burtt crafts a rich tapestry of colors and evocative textures.”\n– Guitar Girl Magazine \nCurated and Hosted by Stone Room Concerts Founder David Holiday \n \nMegan Burtt (https://www.meganburtt.com/) is an international touring singer/songwriter who has garnered national recognition. She has recently released Witness\, her first solo album in several years. The Colorado-based performer\, a past Kerrville NewFolk Competition winner who also performed with the all-redhead roots band Gingerbomb\, had been working on the project for years\, but hit delays with illness and false starts. She really began to unlock new levels in her songwriting when she decided to stop dancing around what she really wanted to say. “I discovered that’s a side of myself I like as a songwriter.\,” she says. “It’s become a sensibility that I know how to rest in.” \nThe results were a long time coming\, but they’re worth the wait. With unfailing honesty and vulnerability\, Burtt—who self-produced the project—wrestles with weighty topics like the burden of her own aspirations (“Drugstore Brand”)\, generational trauma (“Little Girls”)\, and the end of an important relationship (“Unfinished Business\,” “Good for You”). She also does it while mixing in doses of groove and pop smarts that make the lyrics hit even harder. Ultimately\, even though she addresses thorny topics\, there’s a sense of hope on Witness. “These songs are more real because hidden in them is the belief that there’s a silver lining\,” Burtt says. “I’m not ignorant to the shitstorm you have to endure to get there. I am a little jaded\, but I am really hopeful too. I enjoy the pursuit of it all.” \nAbout David Holiday: David Holiday — a lifelong music aficionado who in his youth performed with the Grammy-winning Texas Boys Choir and numerous youth orchestras and ensembles\, founded Stone Room Concerts together with his wife in 2012 to bring intimate\, high-quality performances by local\, national and international independent musicians to the DMV area. He has hosted more than 200 shows over the past decade in homes\, churches and other eclectic venues\, including for several years at Bikenetic\,a full service bicycle shop in Falls Church. Stone Room Concerts also serves as the fiscal agent for Niñas Arriba\, a charitable project of Latin Grammy-nominee Gina Chavez and their wife Jodi Granado\, which they set up to support the college education of young women in El Salvador and Central America. In keeping with his long standing professional involvement with Central America\, Holiday is part of a team supporting the Maya Kaqchikel musician Sara Curruchich. In 2023\, he had the privilege of serving as tour manager for Curruchich’s first-ever US tour\, including major venues and festivals in New York\, California\, Colorado and Illinois.

SUMMARY:Readin' & Rockin' Featuring GRAMMY-Nominated Musician Paul Burch in Conversation with former NPR host Melissa Block.
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereBurch Discusses his new Novel Meridian Rising about Country Music Legend Jimmie Rodgers and Sings a Few Songs Too! \n“Jimmie Rodgers comes a-yodelin’ out of Paul Burch’s novel as if he were with us today. This is a tour de force of musical imagination.”\n—Roy Blount Jr.\, author of Save Room for Pie \n“Paul Burch has made up the truth of Jimmie Rodgers’s life better than any mere ‘facts’ could ever convey—even though you’d have to be in possession of a million biographical facts to pull off this kind of vernacular Huck Finn sleight-of-hand prose magic. I suspect the sleight-of-hand has something to do with the fact that Burch is a musician himself. He played his tune in the key of rollicky\, mixed in with all the sadness. From start to end\, I didn’t hear a false note on the page. From start to end\, this felt like such an authentic American story\, in sore need of a new telling.”\n—Paul Hendrickson\, author of Hemingway’s Boat \nKnown for “Blue Yodel (T for Texas)\,” “Waiting for a Train\,” and “In the Jailhouse Now\,” Jimmie Rodgers’s impact on American music is incalculable. Paul Burch’s bio-fictional tale of the short and poignant life of the “Father of Country Music” includes an imagined first-person memoir\, accompanied by spirited\, hilarious\, and often conflicting recollections of Jimmie’s family and music colleagues\, along with period black-and-white illustrations. \nBorn in 1897 in Meridian\, Mississippi\, Rodgers remains the only artist voted into the Rock & Roll\, Country\, Blues\, and Songwriters Halls of Fame. Generations of fans from B. B. King and Johnny Cash to George Harrison and Dolly Parton recall a Rodgers record as the first music played in their home. But his fame extended far beyond America to Africa\, Ireland\, England\, Australia\, and Russia. His disciples include Robert Johnson\, Bob Dylan\, John Prine\, the Clash’s Joe Strummer\, Jack White\, and anyone over the last century who has picked up a guitar to sing about life and the world around it. \nMeridian Rising is at once an immersive tale and a brilliant literary puzzle\, deftly blending history and fiction to create a vibrant alternative life-tale of the entertainer Howling Wolf called “my man that I really dug.” Written with the knowledge and sensitivity of a touring musician who has traveled many of the same roads and stages\, Meridian Rising engages the reader in a quest for truth while confronting the deceptions that live within our deepest relationships. \nPaul Burch\, a native of Washington\, D.C.\, is a writer\, composer\, and recording artist. As a musician\, Burch put out an album in 2016 about Rodgers that received widespread acclaim. Afterwards\, he moved on to other projects\, but Jimmie’s story had its hooks in him\, revealing itself not as another album but in Jimmie’s voice in prose. The result is a rollicking story of the kind of figure that has become a cultural archetype as well as a hero to some of the best artists of our time: Bob Dylan\, Howling Wolf\, Dolly Parton\, Jack White—the list goes on. Burch has produced numerous albums with his band the WPA Ballclub\, including Last of My Kind\, a companion to Tony Earley’s best-selling novel Jim the Boy\, as well as a musical version of Meridian Rising. In addition\, Burch has produced recordings with Mark Knopfler\, Ralph Stanley\, Lambchop\, and Charlie Louvin\, which received a GRAMMY nomination. Learn more at paulburch.com. \nMelissa Block is an American radio host and journalist. She co-hosted NPR‘s All Things Considered news program from 2003 until August 14\, 2015. In August 2015 she became a Special Correspondent for NPR\, responsible for detailed profiles of newsworthy figures\, and long-form stories and series on topical issues. She retired from NPR in 2023. Block began her NPR career in 1985 as an editorial assistant for All Things Considered and rose to become the show’s senior producer. From 1994 to 2002\, she was a New York reporter and correspondent for NPR. Her reporting after the September 11 attacks helped earn NPR a Peabody Award in 2001. \nIn 2008\, Block was recording an interview in Chengdu\, China\, when the area was struck by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake. Her earthquake coverage earned her a Peabody Award\, a duPont-Columbia Award\, a National Headliner Award\, and the Society of Professional Journalists‘ Sigma Delta Chi Award. Her reporting from Kosovo in 1999 for NPR won an Overseas Press Club Award. \n

SUMMARY:American Roots Concert Series: New Dangerfield
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register Here \nA century of forgetfulness and erasure has led to diminished public awareness of the Black string band tradition – and similarly diminished numbers of Black string bands. As of 2023\, a new Black string band has risen to carry the torch: New Dangerfield. \nNew Dangerfield was originally conceptualized by award-winning banjoist Tray Wellington\, who enlisted three other acclaimed Black roots musicians: multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Kaïa Kater\, bassist Nelson Williams (Chris Jones & the Night Drivers)\, and fiddler and singer Jake Blount. \nThe members of New Dangerfield cut their teeth at fiddler’s conventions and folk festivals\, and in the jazz bars of New Orleans. Community and tradition are the roots of their creative practice – but the branches have spread wide\, and are yet unfolding. Embodying the innovative aspects of the Black string band tradition\, Wellington\, Kater\, Williams and Blount are well-acquainted with the contemporary\, the experimental\, and the speculative. Deploying groove\, technical skill and historical knowledge in the revolutionary spirit of their namesake\, Dangerfield Newby\, New Dangerfield is on a mission to liberate the Black string band tradition. \n \nThanks to all our sponsors: \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:DC Cafe Aman in Concert Featuring Spyros Koliavasilis: Ambassadors of Sound
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereFeaturing Spyros Koliavasilis\, Hakan Keles\, Nicholas Mitrone and Firat Alpergin \nDC Café Aman invites you on a journey where time dissolves and borders become meaningless. DC Café Aman transmits the rich cross-cultural soundscape of Greece\, Turkey\, and the Mediterranean region\, celebrating deeply intertwined musical heritages. The band draws its name from the legendary Café Amans—cafes that thrived in the region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, where multiethnic musicians expressed their joys and sorrows in Greek\, Turkish\, and many other languages. In these spaces\, an extraordinary intermingling occurred\, with musical traditions flowing together like far-flung tributaries feeding the same river. These intense musical conversations were later carried across the Aegean to create a musical genre known as rebetiko\, essentially the blues of the Mediterranean\, which still moves audiences today. The group’s repertoire runs the gamut from the raw rebetiko sounds of Greece’s Markos Vamvakaris to the melancholic folk poetry of Turkey’s beloved Asik Veysel to more modern compositions. It’s proof positive that music is a living thing—alive\, persistent\, and universal in its ability to travel\, adapt\, and survive. But if you’re looking for museum-piece preservation\, you won’t find it here. This is living\, breathing music that demands a response. Some songs are mournful enough to break your heart. Others are irresistibly catchy and joyous enough to pull you from your seat. But all of them remind us that culture is—and always has been—a conversation\, not a recitation or monologue. \nDC Café Aman was inspired and founded by the internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Dr. Spyros Koliavasilis. The 2025 Maryland Heritage Award recipient is a velvety-voiced master of the oud\, cultural preservationist\, and storyteller. With his oud in his hands\, he weaves musical narratives\, each string vibrating with the sound of fin de siècle bazaars and underground tavernas\, but carried along with a brisk modernity. Abetted by his kemane (an Anatolian lyre called the Cappadocian Lyra) and the rhythmic pulse of his Greek Epirote defi (a small hand drum akin to a tambourine)\, Koliavasilis is a fountain of sound. Yet he’s no one-man band. Hakan Keleş’s passionate vocals and guitars add layers of complexity. Nicholas Mitrione’s timeless-sounding Greek bouzouki and baglama sparkle with spontaneity. And Firat Alpergin’s bass anchors it all with a contemporary pulse that keeps one foot firmly planted in tradition. Each instrument is beautiful to hear on its own. But the real magic is in how they speak to one another\, across space and time. The ancient resonance of the oud converses with the bright\, percussive snap of the bouzouki\, while the kemane’s soaring melodies interweave with modish guitar techniques. When the defi joins the electric bass to anchor the rhythm\, you hear centuries of musical evolution compressed into a single\, transcendent moment. It’s this unique instrumental blend—part coffeehouse intimacy\, part concert hall sophistication—and it makes DC Café Aman’s sound so distinctive. \nDC Café Aman shows us that cultures have always been fluid\, that music has always transcended boundaries\, that sharing joy and loss through song is a universal human need\, and that some of the most beautiful sounds ever created have emerged from the spaces where worlds meet and find common ground. DC Café Aman isn’t just reviving the past. They’re reminding us that we were never meant to be strangers. When you attend their performance\, be ready to dance. Prepare to laugh and cry. And let DC Café Aman help you remember what music was always meant to do. Music unites. \n

SUMMARY:Global Sounds on the Hill featuring Estonian Talharpa Duo Puuluup
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereTalharpa is a two to four stringed bowed lyre from northern Europe. Historically\, it has been played in the Estonian-Swedish areas and in Western Estonia\, particularly among Estonian Swedes who came to Estonia around the 10th century from the Swedish part of Finland. \nCurated and hosted by iconic DC impresario and musician Jim Thomson \n\nGlobal Sounds on the Hill is thrilled to present an intimate concert with the neo-zombie Estonian arboreal post-folk duo\, Puuluup.\n\nThe word “Puuluup” comes from the Estonian word for tree or wood: ‘puu’\, and ‘luup’ is a fortuitous re-spelling of the English word ‘loop’. The beautifully weird Estonian duo of Ramo Teder and Marko Veisson do a lot of looping. They’re exponents of a Neo-folk talharpa revival with a touch of surrealism and happy absurdity. Talharpa — that four-stringed Baltic bowed lyre that looks so similar to the Ethiopian krar — has a traditional susurrus sound that\, combined with effects and loops\, creates a fascinating backdrop for their songs. The lyrics and melodies are a mixture of musical memories and improvisation\, and the inspiration is drawn from Finnish jouhikko repertoire\, Sahel blues\, chastushkas and other elements from musical traditions around the world. All kinds of random sources of inspiration are similarly important – unexpected excerpts from Polish TV series\, old Estonian punk\, and sweetbread from Vormsi Island. Together with the band 5MIINUST\, they represented Estonia in the Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden in 2024 and made it to the grand final. Shortly before that they also released the joint album “Kannatused ehk külakiigel pole stopperit” ( “Suffering\, or the village swing\, has no breaks.”\n\n\nDuo Puuluup started in 2014 and its members are Ramo Teder\, a looping pioneer in Estonia (also known for his solo project Pastacas) and Marko Veisson\, who has a background in anthropology. Their first album “Süüta mu lumi” ( Ignite My Snow) was released in 2018 and the second album “Viimane suusataja” ( Last Crosscountry Skier) in 2021.\nCrossing Talharpa with electronics\, Puuluup oscillates on the border of tradition and modern music styles\, flirting with world music\, underground and pop. Puuluup controls the vibrations of Talharpa strings through effect blocks and the looper and uses alternative playing techniques and sound generation options. Electronically amplified echoes\, knocks\, squeaks and scrapes are added to the soft hiss of Talharpa. The music is at times dance-pulsating and at times cinematic and dark\, creeping in and carried over from the chambers of the ancient Vormsi talharpists. It sounds like original creations impregnated with tradition\, references to punk classics and romantic neo-zombie post-folk with educational content. \nThe men themselves say modestly about their work: “Our main message in the context of folk music is that\, look\, you can do all kinds of things with the hiiu kandel\, learn the instrument and make your own music.” \nAbout Jim Thomson: Jim Thomson is an independent DIY music producer based in Washington DC who specializes in booking\, live music production\, artist management\, DJ events\, and record releases.

SUMMARY:American Roots Concert Series: Brennen Leigh
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register Here \nBrennen Leigh was perhaps fated to “walk the line” from birth. Born in Fargo\, North Dakota\, she was raised just across the state border in Moorhead\, Minnesota\, in an environment where country music was all-encompassing. “My parents listened to country music\, to the point where I didn’t realize there was other music\,” she recalls. \n \nProduced by musician Chris Scruggs (bassist with Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives)\, who’s the grandson of bluegrass royalty Earl Scruggs\, and son of pioneering country hitmaker and record producer Gail Davies\, Ain’t Through Honky Tonkin’ Yet follows 2022’s Obsessed With the West\, Leigh’s acclaimed collaboration with Western Swing icons Asleep at the Wheel\, which landed in the Top 10 on the Americana music chart upon its release. “Brennen will carry the torch for real roots American music for her generation\, and she’s the best one to do it in my opinion\,” says Wheel frontman Ray Benson. In addition to her extensive\, genre-defying discography which encompassesnearly a dozen solo and collaborative projects\, Leigh has penned songs for an array of artists including Lee Ann Womack\, Rodney Crowell\, Charley Crockett and many more. She has been hailed by the Grammy-winning Crowell as “a story-telling poet\, landscape painter\, passionate observer of the human condition and a cultural preservationist.” A live-show veteran\, Leigh was just 20 years old when she toured with bluegrass and country-music legend Ralph Stanley\, and hit the road with songwriter Guy Clark\, who proclaimed\, as only he could\, “Brennen Leigh plays guitar like a motherfucker.” Her dynamic and endlessly entertaining live shows certainly live up to that high praise\, showcasing not only her instrumental prowess\, but a gift for vivid storytelling filtered through her refreshingly dry wit. \n \nNew album coming this October! \n \n \nThanks to all our sponsors: \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Foghorn Stringband: American Stringband Concert
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereThe Foghorn Stringband is the present day gold standard for real-deal hard-hitting genuine old-time American string band music\, with nine albums\, thousands of shows\, over 20 years of touring under their belts\, and an entirely new generation of roots musicians following their lead. American roots music is a diverse and never-ending well of inspiration\, and Foghorn Stringband continually and obsessively draws from old-time\, bluegrass\, classic country\, and Cajun music traditions in an ongoing quest to present a broad span of American historical music with an unparalleled youthful energy\, joy\, and virtuosity. \nEach member of Foghorn Stringband exemplifies the best of the roots music traditions from their respective native cultures. Caleb Klauder’s wistful\, keening vocals and rapidfire mandolin picking are as influenced by Southern roots music as much as they are by his upbringing in the sea islands of coastal Washington State. Reeb Willms hails from the wind swept Eastern farmlands of Washington. Her musical family and rural upbringing are on display with every note she sings and every heart she breaks. Nadine Landry’s roots lie in the rural backroads of Acadian Québec\, and her high lonesome vocals have delighted audiences the world over. Her earth-shaking bass playing is the rumbling backbone of the Foghorn sound. Minnesotan Sammy Lind\, simply put\, is the old-time fiddler of his generation whose tone and voice are as old as the same hills that gave birth to this music. Together\, these four have forged a sound like no other. \nThe band’s repertoire has expanded greatly in the past 15 years. They are as comfortable playing music at a neighborhood square dance as they are stirring a festival audience to a frenzy. Old time dance tunes rub shoulders with Cajun waltzes\, vintage honky tonk country\, and classic bluegrass….and it’s all rendered into a cohesive whole. Foghorn Stringband can often be found after a performance in a local pub or club continuing to play with equal energy and joy late into the night. \n

SUMMARY:Stone Room Concerts @ Hill Center Featuring Modern Folk/Americana Sextet Buffalo Rose
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereCurated and Hosted by Stone Room Concerts Founder David Holiday \nHill Center is thrilled to welcome back the phenomenal Buffalo Rose following their sold-out 2024 Concert. \n“How can a band be loose and tight at the same time? Listen to Buffalo Rose for the answer. I flat love them.” \n— Tom Paxton\, folk music legend and GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient \nBuffalo Rose is a charismatic six-piece modern folk/Americana band from Pittsburgh\, PA. They take the singer-songwriter tradition to a new level by crafting original songs which are emotive\, meticulously arranged\, and inspired by a world of idiosyncratic influences that never let a dull or predictable moment creep in. \nThe band’s most recent release Again\, Again\, Again has brought forth a shimmering and sophisticated sound to their well crafted songs. A follow up to their 2022 EP Rabbit\, a project created in collaboration with Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Tom Paxton\, they released two records last year and show no signs of slowing down. Their 2018 debut album\, The Soil and the Seed\, established them as a vocal\, instrumental\, and creative force. Since then\, Buffalo Rose has dropped two EPs\, 2019’s Big Stampede and 2020’s Borrowed and Blue\, opened for the Wood Brothers\, Mipso\, Pokey LaFarge\, Tyler Childers\, Infamous Stringdusters\, and shared a festival stage with the legendary Sam Bush. \nBuffalo Rose’s lineup of Lucy Clabby (vocals)\, Margot Jezerc (vocals)\, Bryce Rabideau (mandolin)\, Malcolm Inglis (dobro)\, Jason Rafalak (upright bass)\, and Shane McLaughlin (guitar\, vocals) pushes itself and each other far beyond their perceived limits and blends their diverse and atypical approach to songwriting with the desire to see how unique a song can get and still feel like home. They use powerful vocal harmonies\, strong playing\, and an original vision to operate at every possible emotional level and put on dynamic live shows that are unforgettable experiences. They go from up and moving to sad and sweet and back again\, bringing the entire audience along. \nThis combination of artistry and enthusiasm makes Buffalo Rose one of the most vital and important groups working today. Rather than play the folk music of the past\, the band gleefully combines genres and ideas together to move acoustic music forward to a new\, contemporary place without ever losing sight of its roots. Fans of Lake Street Dive\, Nickel Creek\, and Punch Brothers will find much to like in this crew. Anyone seeking compelling new acoustic music needs to join Buffalo Rose in the future right now. \n“The balancing act that the six musicians of Buffalo Rose achieve is something to be celebrated. The group match each other’s energy both in instances of quiet tenderness and rich swells… that vocal blend not only sets the mood for the folk tunes but also makes those dynamic changes seem so fluid.” \n— NPR Music \nAbout David Holiday: David Holiday — a lifelong music aficionado who in his youth performed with the Grammy-winning Texas Boys Choir and numerous youth orchestras and ensembles\, founded Stone Room Concerts together with his wife in 2012 to bring intimate\, high-quality performances by local\, national and international independent musicians to the DMV area. \n \n

SUMMARY:Thrilling Upcycled Celtic Folk Trio House of Hamill in Concert
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register Here“Absolutely electrifying… mesmerizing melodies that redefine what’s traditional\, with personality and verve.” — CelticRadio.net \nHouse of Hamill returns to Hill Center following their sold-out 2024 concert \nHouse of Hamill owes its existence – almost entirely – to a series of cancelled flights. \nRose Baldino and Brian Buchanan first found themselves onstage together at the 2014 Folk Alliance International conference in Kansas City. Rose’s band Burning Bridget Cleary was scheduled to perform\, but inclement weather prevented two of her bandmates from flying. Desperate to salvage the showcase\, Rose approached Brian\, who she knew fronted Canadian celtic rock band Enter the Haggis. She thrust a guitar into Brian’s hands\, pulled him onstage\, and the two just clicked. \nFour years and hundreds of shows later\, the duo was booked to play a closing slot at a Colorado festival\, so they hired a bass player and drummer to fill out their sound. By the oddest of coincidences\, their hired bandmates’ flights were canceled the day of the show. A frantic Facebook post introduced Brian and Rose to local musician Caroline Browning\, who joined them on bass for the weekend. Once again\, the chemistry was undeniable\, and House of Hamill became a trio. The band’s latest release\, “Wildfire\,” marks House of Hamill’s most compelling work to date. Featuring their strongest and most exciting songwriting\, “Wildfire” is filled with lyrical depth\, sophisticated vocal and instrumental arrangements\, and hooks that are simply irresistible. This album captures the vibrant energy and creativity that have become the hallmarks of a House of Hamill live show. Whether they’re ripping through a set of original jigs and reels\, adding lush three-part harmonies into traditional folk ballads\, or cracking up an audience with stories from the road\, House of Hamill puts on a show that captivates audiences from the very first note. \nToday\, Pennsylvania-based House of Hamill is a fixture on festival stages across the US\, and have shared their music and stories on the country’s premier folk stages. Their original song “Banks of the Brandywine” was a Grand Prize winner in the 2024 John Lennon Songwriting Contest\, and the video for their all-violin cover of “Sweet Child O’ Mine” amassed over 16 million views on Facebook\, where it was shared over 400\,000 times.
