Join The Knitting Club at Hill Center\, a warm\, social gathering for intermediate knitters. Led by Paula Lytle\, this class offers a supportive space to refine your skills\, experiment with new stitches or patterns\, and work on your personal projects. Along the way\, enjoy conversation and creativity over a complimentary glass of wine. Think of it as a night out with friends — with your knitting needles in hand.\n\nIf you’d like to hone in on your knitting skills with a manageable project\, a place to bring knitting problems or there is a new technique that they want to learn\, this is the class for you! Throughout the series of classes\, you will learn the skills necessary to make a wearable item or other knitted objects. The class is best suited for knitters who know how to cast-on\, knit\, purl\, and bind off.  Students will be introduced to shaping and construction. The class will be hands-on\, and the techniques taught will be based in students’ interests. The first class will include pattern selection. Possible techniques to be covered include lace and textured stitches\, color-work\, and knitting in the round. Classes now come with ‘office hours’ access to your knitting instructor\, Paula Lytle\, for coaching outside of class.\n\nPaula Lytle has lived on the Hill since 1997 and has been knitting for over 40 years. A former college professor\, she has taught knitting to both children and adults\, and one of her students now raises sheep!\n\nShe can be found on Ravelry under the userID Magla.\n\nIf you have yarn and needles which you would like to use\, please bring it to the class.

SUMMARY:Basic Drawing Techniques: Drawing From an Image with Christine Vineyard
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereThis course is designed for adults who wish to start drawing\, but aren’t sure where to begin! We will be working on basic drawing skills and techniques over the course of four classes. Our first class will serve as an introduction – trying out techniques and becoming familiar with materials. In the second class\, students will begin a drawing based on an image of their choice with guidance along the way\, as they put what we have learned to use. The following classes will be used as a way to complete details of our drawing\, add finishing touches and a short critique of everyone’s work! We hope you will join us to learn something new and maybe meet some friends along the way! \nPlease bring a hard copy image to draw from. It should be 4″x 6″ or larger (ex. preferably an image of a person where they are the focus of the image). All other materials are provided. \nThis Series will contain 3 adult art classes. Classes will take place on April 7th\, 21st and 28th.  \n \n“This class was so helpful! By the end of class\, students will have a carved block and at least one final print to take home. SUMMARY:Basic Drawing Techniques: Drawing From an Image with Christine Vineyard
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereThis course is designed for adults who wish to start drawing\, but aren’t sure where to begin! We will be working on basic drawing skills and techniques over the course of four classes. Our first class will serve as an introduction – trying out techniques and becoming familiar with materials. In the second class\, students will begin a drawing based on an image of their choice with guidance along the way\, as they put what we have learned to use. The following classes will be used as a way to complete details of our drawing\, add finishing touches and a short critique of everyone’s work! We hope you will join us to learn something new and maybe meet some friends along the way! \nPlease bring a hard copy image to draw from. It should be 4″x 6″ or larger (ex. preferably an image of a person where they are the focus of the image). All other materials are provided. \nThis Series will contain 3 adult art classes. SUMMARY:Introduction to Block Printmaking Course with Christine Vineyard
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereLearn a new technique and create your very own print in this workshop with Christine Vineyard! Students will walk away with basic knowledge and instructions for how to create a linoleum block print from start to finish. By the end of class\, students will have a carved block and at least one final print to take home. Students should bring a few images to use as inspiration or may sketch their own designs. \nThis is an adult art class which will take place February 2nd\, 9th and 23rd. \nThis month-long introduction to block printing class is designed for beginners to those who have some prior knowledge and are looking to expand upon their techniques. We will start with the basics of block printing and work up to a multi color print throughout the course of the month. No materials are needed as everything you need is provided\, however if you would like to use a specific color of ink it is suggested that you supply your own (Speedball water resistant block printing ink is recommended). The instructor will provide the following inks: black\, red\, yellow\, and blue. \nAll materials will be provided: \n\nLinoleum block\nCarving tools\nBrayers\nInk\n\n  \n“It was very easy and satisfying to see a good final result come together in just a few hours. Young writers will explore poetry as a creative tool for self-expression\, storytelling\, and reflection. Through fun prompts\, group activities\, and gentlediscussion\, kids will learn how to turn their thoughts\, feelings\, and observations into poems. \nDrawing inspiration from nature\, mindfulness\, and everyday experiences\, this workshop encourages students to slow down\, notice the world around them\, and find confidence in their own voices. DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereThis course is designed for adults who wish to start drawing\, but aren’t sure where to begin! We will be working on basic drawing skills and techniques over the course of four classes. Our first class will serve as an introduction – trying out techniques and becoming familiar with materials. In the second class\, students will begin a drawing based on an image of their choice with guidance along the way\, as they put what we have learned to use. The following classes will be used as a way to complete details of our drawing\, add finishing touches and a short critique of everyone’s work! We hope you will join us to learn something new and maybe meet some friends along the way! \nPlease bring a hard copy image to draw from. It should be 4″x 6″ or larger (ex. preferably an image of a person where they are the focus of the image). All other materials are provided. \nThis Series will contain 4 adult art classes. Young artists will explore sculpture and texture by creating wall-mounted artworks inspired by winter landscapes\, snow-covered forms\, and imaginative icy environments. \nUsing clay and plaster\, participants will experiment with carving\, layering\, and molding techniques to build dimensional wall sculptures. This workshop encourages creative thinking\, sensory exploration\, and an introduction to sculptural design concepts in a fun\, supportive setting. \nParticipants will: \n\nLearn basic sculpting techniques using clay and plaster\nExplore texture\, form\, and relief sculpture\nCreate a winter-inspired wall sculpture to take home\nBuild confidence working with new materials and tools\n\nAll materials will be provided. No prior experience necessary—just dress to get a little messy and bring your imagination! \n\n\n\n\nInstructor Bio:\nSarah Jones is a self-taught artist with a studio practice in Virginia. She began her professional career as a pastry chef and earned a degree in business\, continuously weaving those experiences into her artistic practice. Drawing from her culinary background\, she develops unconventional methods and enjoys pushing creative boundaries. Her work is driven by exploration and material experimentation\, with texture and culture influenced by world travel and nature. Sarah is a full-time artist who also leads painting and sculpting workshops and supports organizations creating positive change.

SUMMARY:Knitting for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register Here[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\n\nIf you have ever wanted to start knitting with a manageable project this is the class for you! With individualized instruction\, students new to knitting will learn pattern & yarn selection\, stitches\, and technique. If you have knitted before\, our instructor welcomes you to come and try a new technique or different stitches on a small item. The class will be a hands-on exploration of what’s possible with one skein of yarn and how to find inspiration and resources for future projects. Classes now come with ‘office hours’ access to your knitting instructor\, Paula Lytle\, for coaching outside of class.\n\n\n\nPaula Lytle has lived on the Hill since 1997 and has been knitting for over 40 years. A former college professor\, she has taught knitting to both children and adults\, and one of her students now raises sheep.\n\n\n\nShe can be found on Ravelry under the userID Magla.\n\n\n\nFeel free to bring your own needles and yarn if you already have it. There will be supplies available as well. If you want to purchase yarn and needles before the class starts\, it is recommended to buy a size 7 or 8 straight needle and worsted weight yarn.\n\n\n\nFurloughed Worker Admission \nIf you are a furloughed worker\, Hill Center is pleased to offer complimentary admission to select Knitting classes. SUMMARY:Introduction to Linocut Printmaking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereLearn a new technique and create your very own print in this workshop with Christine Vineyard! Students will walk away with basic knowledge and instructions for how to create a linoleum block print from start to finish. By the end of class\, students will have a carved block and at least one final print to take home. Students should bring a few images to use as inspiration or may sketch their own designs. \nThis is an adult art class. \nAll materials will be provided: \n\nLinoleum block\nCarving tools\nBrayers\nInk\n\n“It was very easy and satisfying to see a good final result come together in just a few hours. I’m very please with what I was able to create!”  -Lauren \n \n  \nChristine Vineyard is a local DC artist and art teacher\, working with all mediums and a concentration in photography\, drawing and painting. She has her BFA in Art Education and a Masters of Art Education with a focus on curriculum writing. Christine is originally from Atlanta\, GA where she taught at an international charter school before relocating to DC to continue her teaching career. Christine has worked with all ages from preschool to adults and is excited about sharing her knowledge and love of art with others. \nA minimum of 4 students is required for the class to occur. Students will be notified if the minimum is not met. \nHill Center is dedicated to making our programming equitable and accessible to all.
