Sephardic chef-instructor Susan Barocas and veteran food journalist Bonnie Benwick will share recipes for pies and bars with alternative crusts\, savory fruit creations\, honey-kissed matzah fritters\, and syrup-soaked nut cakes\, as well as some of the history and culture behind them. Let’s cook\, bake\, and enjoy this unleavened holiday! You don’t have to be Jewish to partake. Bring a take-home container (or two). \nChef\, writer and cooking instructor Susan Barocas is passionate about reduced-waste cooking and healthy eating\, even when cooking for one. She is co-founder/co-director of Savor: A Sephardic Music  & Food Experience and has taught cooking across North America and internationally. Susan was honored to serve as the guest chef for three of President Obama’s White House Seders. She is a member of Les Dames d’Escoffier and the international Association of Culinary Professionals. She edited The Washington Post Cookbook: Readers’ Favorite Recipes (2013). Retired\, she is now involved in cookbook production\, and was honored to contribute two recipes (Date-Night Pasta and Blood Orange Salsa) to the terrific A Taste of Hill Center (2021). With individualized instruction\, students new to knitting will learn pattern & yarn selection\, stitches\, and technique. If you have knitted before\, our instructor welcomes you to come and try a new technique or different stitches on a small item. The class will be a hands-on exploration of what’s possible with one skein of yarn and how to find inspiration and resources for future projects. Classes now come with ‘office hours’ access to your knitting instructor\, Paula Lytle\, for coaching outside of class. \nPaula Lytle has lived on the Hill since 1997 and has been knitting for over 40 years. A former college professor\, she has taught knitting to both children and adults\, and one of her students now raises sheep. \nShe can be found on Ravelry under the userID Magla. \nFeel free to bring your own needles and yarn if you already have it. There will be supplies available as well. If you want to purchase yarn and needles before the class starts\, it is recommended to buy a size 7 or 8 straight needle and worsted weight yarn.

In school\, she joined concert bands playing the French horn and often landed leading roles in musical theater productions at school and in community theaters. Alice studied music at the University of Maryland\, College Park where she served in leadership positions in music honor society Tau Beta Sigma and the Mighty Sound of Maryland Marching Band. Now\, Alice performs and teaches as a professional vocalist\, piano\, trumpet\, and French horn player.\n\n\n\n\n\nAlice wrote original music for\, performed with\, and produced and edited music videos for funk Wammie nominee Strangers That Clique. She currently sings and plays trumpet and keys with award winning musician and climate activist\, Joshua Long\, and she collaborates and performs with Sly on the Bright Side and Dream City Brass. Alice fronts her new band\, The Melting Virgos\, in which she performs her original songs about climate justice and class solidarity.\n\nAlice’s love of music and focus on fun keeps students coming back\, excited to develop their skills. In this blended Beginner level class\, the instructor will introduce the alphabet and the basic tenets of the French language. Repetition will be emphasized. \n\nThis class is also suitable for Intermediate I students who have a stronger grasp of the language\, but aren’t quite ready for full blown conversation. These students will explore French poetry\, singers\, and magazines as avenues to discover verb tenses (présent\, imparfait\, futur and passé composé)\, irregular verbs\, adverbs and prepositions.\n\nIn the class\, students will expand their French vocabulary and grasp on grammar\, while exploring Francophone cultures. SUMMARY:Basic Drawing Techniques: Drawing From an Image with Christine Vineyard
DESCRIPTION:from  May 14 to June 18  @  12:30 pm - 1:30 pmRegister HereThis course is designed for adults who wish to start drawing\, but aren’t sure where to begin! We will be working on basic drawing skills and techniques over the course of four classes. Our first class will serve as an introduction – trying out techniques and becoming familiar with materials. In the second class\, students will begin a drawing based on an image of their choice with guidance along the way\, as they put what we have learned to use. The following classes will be used as a way to complete details of our drawing\, add finishing touches and a short critique of everyone’s work! We hope you will join us to learn something new and maybe meet some friends along the way! \nPlease bring a hard copy image to draw from. It should be 4″x 6″ or larger (ex. preferably an image of a person where they are the focus of the image). All other materials are provided. \nThis Series will contain 4 adult art classes. Classes will take place on March 3rd\, 10th\, 17th and 24th.  \n \n“This class was so helpful! In school\, she joined concert bands playing the French horn and often landed leading roles in musical theater productions at school and in community theaters. Alice studied music at the University of Maryland\, College Park where she served in leadership positions in music honor society Tau Beta Sigma and the Mighty Sound of Maryland Marching Band. Now\, Alice performs and teaches as a professional vocalist\, piano\, trumpet\, and French horn player.\n\n\n\n\n\nAlice wrote original music for\, performed with\, and produced and edited music videos for funk Wammie nominee Strangers That Clique. She currently sings and plays trumpet and keys with award winning musician and climate activist\, Joshua Long\, and she collaborates and performs with Sly on the Bright Side and Dream City Brass. Alice fronts her new band\, The Melting Virgos\, in which she performs her original songs about climate justice and class solidarity.\n\nAlice’s love of music and focus on fun keeps students coming back\, excited to develop their skills. Led by Paula Lytle\, this class offers a supportive space to refine your skills\, experiment with new stitches or patterns\, and work on your personal projects. Along the way\, enjoy conversation and creativity over a complimentary glass of wine. Think of it as a night out with friends — with your knitting needles in hand.\n\nIf you’d like to hone in on your knitting skills with a manageable project\, a place to bring knitting problems or there is a new technique that they want to learn\, this is the class for you! Throughout the series of classes\, you will learn the skills necessary to make a wearable item or other knitted objects. The class is best suited for knitters who know how to cast-on\, knit\, purl\, and bind off.  Students will be introduced to shaping and construction. The class will be hands-on\, and the techniques taught will be based in students’ interests. The first class will include pattern selection. Possible techniques to be covered include lace and textured stitches\, color-work\, and knitting in the round. Classes now come with ‘office hours’ access to your knitting instructor\, Paula Lytle\, for coaching outside of class.\n\nPaula Lytle has lived on the Hill since 1997 and has been knitting for over 40 years. A former college professor\, she has taught knitting to both children and adults\, and one of her students now raises sheep!\n\nShe can be found on Ravelry under the userID Magla.\n\nIf you have yarn and needles which you would like to use\, please bring it to the class.

For that reason\, the course includes a variety of components designed to allow you to practice and improve your abilities in reading\, writing\, speaking\, and understanding spoken Spanish. This course exposes learners to a variety of cultural aspects in the Spanish-speaking world and in the Cultural Readings that are found in the workbook. \nOur goal is to give you the confidence you need to progress smoothly. With us you will learn how to maintain a basic conversation in Spanish for beginners. You will learn basic elements of Spanish grammar\, understand and use everyday expressions in Spanish\, and more. \nThe students will be able to see their progress very soon and enjoy the interaction in an intimate class setting of 4 to 12 students. \nFor this class\, please purchase a copy of Spanish Now Level 1 (9th edition) Barron’s editorial. Students are responsible for obtaining the book on their own and are encouraged to purchase it from the retailer that works best for them (Amazon\, local bookstores\, etc.). SUMMARY:Contemporary Watercolors Course with Christine Vineyard

Students will learn how to use several different types of watercolor paints (tube\, liquid and pencils) and approach them in a contemporary way. This class will give students the skills to create paintings on their own with a variety of materials\, many of them everyday household items. \nThe class is designed as an introduction to watercolor painting and techniques and is great for people with little to no prior experience who are interested in learning more. Advanced students are welcome as well to learn new techniques! The class will also include basic information on watercolor paints\, papers and brushes. \nThis is an adult art class.
