SUMMARY:Mr. Mike's Music - Mixed Ages Classes (0-5 Years) 2026
DESCRIPTION:from May 14 to June 18 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pmRegister HereEach week in Music Together® Mixed-Age Classes your babies\, toddlers\, preschoolers\, and the grownups who love them® gather for 45 minutes of fun-filled family music time. Your teacher will lead you and the other families in music activities ranging from lullabies to full-on jam sessions (with child-friendly instruments\, of course). It’s so much fun you won’t realize how much learning is taking place! \nYou’ll take home the award-winning music used in class\, along with an illustrated songbook and other resources. As you discover new ways to play with music all week long\, you’ll support your child’s music learning and overall development—even if you don’t think of yourself as a great singer or dancer. \nWhy Mixed Ages? \nChild development researchers discovered that grouping children of different ages in one class encourages natural\, family-style learning\, so Music Together developed the Mixed-Age Music Class. In this group music class in Washington\, DC\, everyone participates at their own levels: babies vocalize\, listen\, and observe; toddlers play and experiment; and preschoolers build confidence as they emerge as classroom leaders. Grownups are happy because everyone can come to class together. \n“My husband teases me because whenever I mention Music Together to anyone\, he always pipes up my next line which is ‘best money we ever spent.’ I truly mean it. Kudos to Ken and Lili for a program that outshines any other I have seen around.” —Kim\, Princeton\, NJ \nhttps://mistermikesmusic.com/classes.aspx?sem=51790#tabs

SUMMARY:Stone Room Concerts @ Hill Center Featuring Eastern-European Jewish Folk Music with Seth Kibel & The Kleztet
DESCRIPTION:from May 14 to June 18 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pmRegister HereSeth Kibel & The Kleztet will entertain and delight with a program focused on upbeat klezmer music (Eastern-European Jewish folk music) along with some detours into Yiddish folk song\, jazz\, swing\, and the Great American Songbook. Think the Brothers Gershwin\, Irving Berlin\, Jerome Kern\, Duke Ellington\, Benny Goodman\, and more! Seth and his band will have your toes a-tappin’ and make you want to dance in the aisles. Historical commentary (some of which might actually be true) and humorous anecdotes from Kibel will provide an insightful context for their selections. \nKlezmer\, which literally means “tool of song” in Yiddish\, is the secular folk music of the Jews of Central and Eastern Europe. In the first decades of the 1900s\, this music flourished not only in the Old World but also in the New\, in the immigrant community of New York City. There\, the sounds of the European “fiddler on the roof” mixed with the sounds of early jazz and Tin Pan Alley. The result was a quintessentially American sound. \n \nSeth Kibel is one of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier woodwind specialists\, working with some of the best bands in klezmer\, jazz\, swing\, and more. Wowing audiences on clarinet\, flute\, and saxophone\, Seth has made a name for himself in the Washington/Baltimore region and beyond. He is a featured performer with The Kleztet\, Bay Jazz Project\, Music Pilgrim Trio\, Daryl Davis Band\, The Natty Beaux\, and more. Winner of 28 Washington Area Music Awards (Wammies)\, including “Best World Music Instrumentalist” (2003-11) and “Best Jazz Instrumentalist” (2005\, 2007-8\, 2011-14). His most recent recording\, “Clown with a Stick\,” was released in May 2023 on the Azalea City Recordings record label. He’s won numerous prizes in the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest (MASC) including the Grand Prize in 2016 and a Gold Prize in 2022. When he’s not performing\, Seth lectures on music history for numerous institutions\, including the Osher Lifelong Learning programs at Johns Hopkins and Towson Universities. In addition to Kibel\, the band features  Sean Lane — piano\, Derek Wiegmann — double bass\, and Joey Antico — double bass. \nDavid Holiday\, a lifelong music aficionado \, founded Stone Room Concerts together with his wife in 2012 to bring intimate\, high-quality performances by local\, national\, and international independent musicians to the DMV area. He has curated and hosted well over 200 concerts over the past decade in his home\, churches\, and Hill Center.

SUMMARY:Overbeck Lecture: Shakespeare Re-imagined for the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:from May 14 to June 18 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pmRegister HereIs Shakespeare relevant today? Do we really need a building dedicated to him and his times in the 21st century\, when we are so heavily reliant on the virtual world? The Folger Shakespeare Library\, a sleek expression of early 20th century neoclassicism\, stands as one of the most interesting\, privately held buildings on Capitol Hill. The recent re-opening of the Library after a multi-year construction project revealed a major addition which significantly expanded public spaces\, increased accessibility\, and transformed the visitor experience. \nAt the March 30 Overbeck Capitol Hill History lecture\, the illustrated presentation will provide a brief look at the building’s initial purpose and later changes\, with a major focus on the what\, how\, and why behind its most recent expansion in both building and presentation of Shakespeare’s world. \nMs. Eig\, architectural historian\, historic preservation specialist\, and CEO of EHT Traceries\, Inc.\, consulted with the Folger through the extended renovation process. Her work involved extensive documentation of the historic interior spaces\, updating the building’s landmark status\, working with architects to find sensitive ways to adapt the building\, and guiding the historic approvals process. \nThe Shakespeare Re-imagined lecture will be held Monday\, March 30\, at Hill Center\, Old Naval Hospital\, 921 Pennsylvania Avenue\, S.E. (www.hillcenterdc.org; 202-549-4172). Admission is free\, but a reservation is requested due to limited capacity. Reservations can be made starting March 12. Seating will begin at 6:30 pm; the PowerPoint presentation will begin at 7 pm.

Kudos to Ken and Lili for a program that outshines any other I have seen around.” —Kim\, Princeton\, NJ \nhttps://mistermikesmusic.com/classes.aspx?sem=51790#tabs \n \nmr

SUMMARY:Acclaimed Irish\, Scottish\, and American Folk duo Rakish in Concert
DESCRIPTION:from May 14 to June 18 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pmRegister HereHill Center is beyond thrilled to welcome back Maura Shawn Scanlin and Conor Hearn who comprise Rakish.\nTheir previous two concerts here sold out quickly\, so be sure to purchase your tickets early. \nRooted in tradition with an ear toward the future\, contemporary folk duo Rakish embodies earnest musical exploration and demonstrates an infectious playfulness on stage. In their sound together\, it is evident the two friends share an unbridled love for the traditional sounds of Celtic and American music\, and the tight ensemble of a group with years of collaboration under their belt. Strings Magazine says: “Explorative and versatile\, the duo draws evident inspiration from not just the deep and wide history of Scottish and Irish Celtic composition\, but also the precision-focused structures of classical chamber music and a whole array of improvisational styles.” \nKnown for her toneful and award-winning fiddle playing in the Celtic music world\, Maura Shawn Scanlin grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Maura is a 2-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and a winner of the Glenfiddich Fiddle Competition in Scotland. Her clawhammer banjo playing and songwriting\, also featured in the duo\, hold the regional music of her homeland close. Maura finds her niche combining influences from a widespread musical journey with the sounds she grew up around. \nSteeped in the Irish music communities of Washington D.C. and Baltimore\, MD where he was raised\, acclaimed guitarist Conor Hearn developed a keen interest in literary theory and poetry\, a unique well of material from which he draws unending musical inspiration. His settings of modernist poems\, like James Joyce’s Chamber Music\, epitomize the duo’s approach: the dexterous alchemy of the old and the new into something wholly Rakish. A keenly sought-after collaborative guitarist\, Conor performs with many of the most renowned names in Celtic music today. His guitar style combines bass and rhythm for a uniquely powerful and precise sound. \nRakish\, embracing the unconventional connotation of their namesake\, create and perform music with verve. Recent highlights of their travels include performances at the Library of Congress\, Celtic Colours International Music Festival\, Prince Edward Island’s Festival of Small Halls\, the Corvallis Celtic Festival\, and Official Showcases at Folk Alliance International. They have taught at esteemed fiddle camps across the country including Alasdair Fraser’s Sierra Fiddle Camp\, Folk College\, Katie McNally’s Boston States Fiddle Camp\, and Hanneke Cassel’s Pure Dead Brilliant Fiddle Weekend. \nOn Now\, O Now\, the duo’s sophomore release (out October 11\, 2024) it is clear Rakish cannot be pigeonholed into one genre and is most comfortable occupying the in-between. Together they journey through Celtic and Americana styles\, deftly showcasing how to bring forth something new from the deep well of tradition. They are touring their new album across the country throughout the fall of 2024 and into 2025.
