DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereTai Chi Chuan is a formulated set of movements designed for body and mind. This discipline for health and serenity is also a complete system of self-defense and a martial art that emphasizes sensitivity\, serenity and flexibility. \nOur classes are conducted in a relaxed\, go-at-your-own-pace\, collegial spirit infused with the seriousness that the study of Tai Chi demands. Both beginner and intermediate classes are offered. Intermediate and advanced students learn push hands\, saber\, sword and spear. \nSifu Larry Hawkins\, a practitioner of Tai Chi and other Chinese martial arts for more than 30 years\, is certified to teach Wu Style by the Hong Kong-based International Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan Federation. He studied in China where the Wu family developed the tradition five generations ago and trains annually with Grand Master Wu Kwong Yu in Toronto. \nAll ages are welcome. Classes are conducted Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:15 to 8:15 pm and Saturdays from 9am to 12pm. \n

DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereHill Center has partnered with Go Spanish Now to provide this Spanish course. \n \nThe purpose of this course is not simply to teach you about Spanish\, but rather to develop your language skills so that you can communicate successfully in the language. For that reason\, the course includes a variety of components designed to allow you to practice and improve your abilities in reading\, writing\, speaking\, and understanding spoken Spanish. This course exposes learners to a variety of cultural aspects in the Spanish-speaking world and in the Cultural Readings that are found in the workbook. \nOur goal is to give you the confidence you need to progress smoothly. With us you will learn how to maintain a basic conversation in Spanish for beginners. You will learn basic elements of Spanish grammar\, understand and use everyday expressions in Spanish\, and more. \nThe students will be able to see the progress very soon and enjoy the interaction in an intimate class setting of 4 to 12 students. \nFor this class\, please purchase a copy of Spanish Now Level 1 (9th edition) Barron’s editorial. Students are responsible for obtaining the book on their own and are encouraged to purchase it from the retailer that works best for them (Amazon\, local bookstores\, etc.). Please also come prepared with a notebook\, as it will be used regularly during class. \nThis is an 8-week course. DESCRIPTION:In-person Register Here\n\n\n\nAlice was raised by a family of professional singers and began taking Suzuki piano lessons at age 4. In school\, she joined concert bands playing the French horn and often landed leading roles in musical theater productions at school and in community theaters. Alice studied music at the University of Maryland\, College Park where she served in leadership positions in music honor society Tau Beta Sigma and the Mighty Sound of Maryland Marching Band. Now\, Alice performs and teaches as a professional vocalist\, piano\, trumpet\, and French horn player.\n\n\n\n\n\nAlice wrote original music for\, performed with\, and produced and edited music videos for funk Wammie nominee Strangers That Clique. She currently sings and plays trumpet and keys with award winning musician and climate activist\, Joshua Long\, and she collaborates and performs with Sly on the Bright Side and Dream City Brass. Alice fronts her new band\, The Melting Virgos\, in which she performs her original songs about climate justice and class solidarity.\n\nAlice’s love of music and focus on fun keeps students coming back\, excited to develop their skills. DESCRIPTION:In-person Register HereWhile fluency is developed over years\, confidence is built in the classroom. In this blended Beginner level class\, the instructor will introduce the alphabet and the basic tenets of the French language. You will learn numbers\, days of the week\, and months of the year and dive into a crossword puzzle to learn basic vocabulary. Repetition will be emphasized. \n\nThis class is also suitable for Intermediate I students who have a stronger grasp of the language\, but aren’t quite ready for full blown conversation. These students will explore French poetry\, singers\, and magazines as avenues to discover verb tenses (présent\, imparfait\, futur and passé composé)\, irregular verbs\, adverbs and prepositions.\n\nIn the class\, students will expand their French vocabulary and grasp on grammar\, while exploring Francophone cultures. DESCRIPTION:In-person Register Here\n\n\n\nAlice was raised by a family of professional singers and began taking Suzuki piano lessons at age 4. In school\, she joined concert bands playing the French horn and often landed leading roles in musical theater productions at school and in community theaters. Alice studied music at the University of Maryland\, College Park where she served in leadership positions in music honor society Tau Beta Sigma and the Mighty Sound of Maryland Marching Band. Now\, Alice performs and teaches as a professional vocalist\, piano\, trumpet\, and French horn player.\n\n\n\n\n\nAlice wrote original music for\, performed with\, and produced and edited music videos for funk Wammie nominee Strangers That Clique. She currently sings and plays trumpet and keys with award winning musician and climate activist\, Joshua Long\, and she collaborates and performs with Sly on the Bright Side and Dream City Brass. Alice fronts her new band\, The Melting Virgos\, in which she performs her original songs about climate justice and class solidarity.\n\nAlice’s love of music and focus on fun keeps students coming back\, excited to develop their skills. DESCRIPTION:In-person Register Here“Maria Mazzotta has a remarkably memorable voice\, and a taste for musical adventure.” \n– RootsWorld \nCurated and hosted by iconic DC impresarios and musician Jim Thomson \nMaria Mazzotta’s unique versatility is what makes her one of the most important voices of the music scene in the Apulia region of Italy and\, more generally\, of world music towards which she has an extremely respectful approach\, backed by meticulous research into vocal characteristics of the area which highly differentiate the various cultures found within it. She moves in a natural\, seamless way from the sounds of Southern Italy to the inflections of balkan music\, and captivates the audience with her sincere interpretation as she carries them along while immersing them into the cultures of the songs interpreted. \nShe started studying the piano very young (for 7 years\, then the harp (for 3 years) at the “Tito Schipa” Conservatory in Lecce\, and in 1998 had her first encounter with the songs of the Salento tradition through listening to the original sources and by actively participating in the re-visitation and revival of these songs. \nFrom 2000 to 2015\, she was part of Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino; a band she  recorded 6 albums with\, participating in some of the most important international world music festivals. \nIn 2020 she released Amoreamaro by Agualoca Records\, her debut solist album. With this album Maria Mazzotta meeting great acclaim by the audience and by the critics. “Amoreamaro” is nr.9 of “Best Album of 2019/20 season” by Transglobal World Music Chart\, finalist of prestigious Targa Tenco. \nMaria Mazzotta can boast numerous collaborations with national and international artists\, including: Bobby McFerrin\, Ibrahim Maalouf\, Rita Marcotulli\, Ballake Sissoko\, Piers Faccini\, Justin Adams e Juldeh Camara\, Mannarino\, Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio\, Hysni (Niko) Zela e Fanfara Tirana\, Eva Quartet\, Klapa Otok\, Bojken Lako\, Raiz\, Roy Paci\, Raffaele Casarano.\, Bijan Chemirani\, Mario Arcari\, Rocio Molina. \n \nAbout Jim Thomson: Jim Thomson is an independent DIY music producer based in Washington DC who specializes in booking\, live music production\, artist management\, DJ events\, and record releases. In Washington DC he operates an ongoing live music series called Secret Planet DC that partners with various venues\, foundations\, and musicians all across the city to produce unique\, intimate\, and meaningful performances. He also owns and operates the Washington\, DC-based boutique record label Electric Cowbell Records as well as holding down and curating all vinyl DJ residencies at The Green Zone\, Cana\, La Shukran\, Daikaya\, Le Mont Royal\, Eaton Hotel\, the DC Record Fair\, and other bars and restaurants in the city. \nJim is also a lifelong musician and promoter\, playing drums as a founding member of GWAR\, The Alter-Natives (SST Records)\, Bio Ritmo\, CSC Funk Band\, Time Is Fire\, and he currently plays drums and percussion with Motherf*ckers JMB & Co with Geologist from Animal Collective. One of the first concerts he co-promoted was a Bad Brains show in Richmond\, Virginia in 1987 followed by years of concerts including surf guitar legend Dick Dale\, Knitting Factory tours\, Marc Ribot\, Charles Gayle\, Negativland\, Medeski\, Martin\, and Wood\, and many others.
