DESCRIPTION:from June 22 to August 17 @ 8:00 am - 6:00 pmRegister Here“Way of Tradition” Solo Performance & Masterclass \nYogev Shetrit’s solo performance presents original compositions that fuse traditional North African\, Gnawa\, and Andalusian music from his Moroccan heritage with contemporary jazz and Mediterranean influences. Through drums\, rhythm\, and live musical storytelling\, Shetrit creates an intimate and powerful musical experience that connects ancient traditions with modern improvisation. \nHis latest album\, “Way of Tradition\,” was praised by All About Jazz for “keeping its jazz roots while weaving global influences\,” and for blending Moroccan\, Central Asian\, and Mediterranean traditions into a unique and personal musical language. The review highlighted how Shetrit’s music transcends geographical and stylistic boundaries and noted that the drums function not only rhythmically but melodically\, becoming a central voice in the music. \nBefore recording\, the compositions were performed extensively in concerts and festivals worldwide\, where audiences responded warmly to the music’s fresh yet deeply rooted cultural identity\, connecting both to its originality and its traditional influences. \nYogev’s masterclass explores the rich rhythmic traditions of the Middle East\, Morocco\, and the Mediterranean\, and their influence on jazz and contemporary music. Participants learn core rhythm concepts\, how to orchestrate them on different instruments\, and how to integrate them into modern performance. \nThe masterclass is highly participatory with audiences joining through clapping\, body percussion\, call-and-response\, and group rhythm exercises\, creating an engaging and inspiring shared musical experience. \n \nYogev Shetrit is an international composer and drummer\, born in 1978. He earned his BA in Musicology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and was the founder and member of the internationally acclaimed Coolooloosh band. He has performed with notable artists including Chuchito Valdez\, Tia Fuller\, Arnie Lawrence\, Paulo Morello\, and Kevin Mahogany. \nA composer at heart\, Shetrit formed the Yogev Shetrit Trio in 2016 to perform his original music. He grew up watching her prepare traditional dishes with much love and care called Raksi- which is ‘local Daru’ at home\, igniting his passion for cooking. \nAfter working in Nepal at Hotel Deurali in 2001\, he arrived in the US in 2007 on an immigrant visa\, and when he came to the United States he had no idea how to find a job and worked at 7-11\, living in an apartment shared with family and friends. He always used to cook meals for everyone\, and one day he made chicken curry and was told he needed to work in a restaurant- which began his quest for culinary ambition. \nOver time\, experimenting with different ingredients and techniques became a creative outlet\, and he realized how much joy food can bring to people. His philosophy about food and dining centers around creating dishes that are approachable and creates experiences that delights senses and respects both the ingredients and the environment. He believes in using fresh\, high-quality ingredients and prioritizes sustainability by sourcing locally whenever possible. His approach to menu creation is rooted in a balance of seasonal flavors and cultural diversity\, aiming to offer a range of options that cater various tastes and dietary preferences. \nEvery dish created is deeply connected to its origins—whether that’s through traditional techniques\, regional flavors\, or the cultural stories behind the ingredients. He feels that food with roots tells a story and offers a sense of authenticity and connection that gives the dining experience new heights. \nLearn more about Tapori and Daru here. \nComplimentary beer and wine will be served. \nPLEASE NOTE: Tickets are non-refundable. SUMMARY:Talk of the Hill with Bill Press Featuring NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday Host Scott Simon
DESCRIPTION:from June 22 to August 17 @ 8:00 am - 6:00 pmRegister HereSimon discusses and reads from his charming new book\, Ulysses S. Cat And Other Animals I Have Known \n“Scott Simon’s work\, filled with irresistible\, heartfelt encounters and journeys with animals\, from family hearth to hot spots around the world\, will bring you insights and joy.” ―Amy Tan \nScott Simon’s household makes little distinction between humans and other animals. Whether two-legged or four-\, flesh-covered\, fur-covered\, feathered\, or gilled—everyone is family. Today\, Simon lives with the haiku-writing and absolument charmant French poodle Daisy and the daringly audacious foster cat Gato Blanco. But that’s just the start. \nIn ULYSSES S. CAT AND OTHER ANIMALS I HAVE KNOWN [W. W. Norton & Company; May 5\, 2026; $24.99 hardcover]\, Simon warmly philosophizes on the unforgettable and utterly ordinary moments between species\, along with their joys\, worries\, love\, and humor. Depicting a lifetime of remarkable\, enduring relationships with pets\, Simon explores the difficulty of expressing the strong ties we feel: a kinship between humans and animals that’s more familial than “owner\,” and more mutual than “caregiver” or “guardian.” \nPaired with the charming\, whimsical illustrations of renowned New Yorker cartoonist Liana Finck\, Simon reflects on how pets unlock our hearts and burrow into our lives\, beginning with his family’s dog guiding his first steps. From a cat who escaped the British Embassy (Simon had to promise to raise her as British) and street dogs during Sarajevo’s siege to a series of beta fish all named Salman Fishdie and an energetic\, cage-escaping hamster Bagel\, he reveals how our animals change not just our lives but how we see the world. ULYSSES S. CAT is an enchanting and thoughtful profusion of exuberant memories and musings on a life spent in animal company. \nScott Simon hosts NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday and Up First\, and is also a special contributor to CBS News Sunday Morning. A winner of Emmy and Peabody Awards\, he is in the Radio Hall of Fame and the Illinois Lincoln Academy. He lives in Washington\, DC\, with his wife and two daughters. \nBill Press began his career as a political insider and media commentator on KABC-TV and KCOP-TV\, both in Los Angeles. Over the years\, he has received numerous awards for his work\, including four Emmys and a Golden Mike Award. He also served as aide to California Governor Jerry Brown and waChair of the California Democratic Party from 1993 to 1996. \nThe former co-host of MSNBC’s Buchanan and Press\, CNN’s Crossfire and The Spin Room\, Press has built a national reputation on thought-provoking and humorous insights from the left side of the political aisle. Press is the author of ten books and is the host of the twice-weekly “The Bill Press Pod” – available on Google\, Apple\, Spotify\, or Tune-In. He’s a member of the White House press corps. He also writes a weekly column for The Hill and a weekly syndicated newspaper column distributed by Tribune Media Services. \n \nEast City Bookshop will have books for sale and signing.

SUMMARY:Long Lunch - Summer Paella with Chef Mark Haskell
DESCRIPTION:from June 22 to August 17 @ 8:00 am - 6:00 pmRegister HereJoin us in the kitchen for a Paella workshop! The most traditional paella was based on the rice fields in the Ebro delta valley near Valencia and what the farmers and irrigation workers found – using snails/escargot & rabbit\, and local gardens\, not seafood – but then it was adopted to wider tastes & pocketbooks. We’ll be making a summer version with chicken\, shrimp and sausage. \nThis dish makes the perfect feast because you don’t have to sweat over the details! Join Mark Haskell in learning the fun of this one-pot dish that allows you to toss in the ingredients and let them simmer in harmony while you watch and sip your favorite drink. \nShut your laptop for a long Friday lunch and add another favorite to your go-to cooking list. Eat\, drink and be merry! \nComplimentary beer and wine are included in the price of the course! \nChef Mark Haskell’s career has taken him to kitchens in Europe\, Asia\, South America and the US. A native of the South Carolina Lowcountry\, he has an affection for Southern cooking and gardening\, and he applies his international flair to these traditions. He was knighted a Chevalier to the Confrérie de Vin de Saint Vincent for his work promoting organic and biodynamic food in the Côtes du Rhône region of France. \nTickets are non–refundable. SUMMARY:Stone Room Concerts @ Hill Center Featuring Crys Matthews\, 2025 International Folk Music Award's Artist of the Year
DESCRIPTION:from June 22 to August 17 @ 8:00 am - 6:00 pmRegister HereA troubadour of truth\, Nashville resident Crys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. An award-winning\, prolific lyricist and composer\, Matthews blends Country\, Americana\, Folk\, Blues\, and Bluegrass into a bold\, complex performance steeped in traditional melodies punctuated by honest\, original lyrics. She is made for these times.\n\n\n \n\n\nOf Matthews\, ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says\, “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice\, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times.” \nJustin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation notes\, her gift is a “reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” In her own words\, Matthews says her mission is: “to amplify the voices of the unheard\, to shed light on the unseen\, and to be a steadfast reminder that hope and love are the truest pathways to equity and justice.” Her new album is an embodiment of and a testament to that mission. \nA daughter of the South by way of Nashville now and North Carolina forever\, and the self-proclaimed poster child of intersectionality\, Matthews is boldly answering those questions on her new album aptly titled Reclamation. \n“This album is both sonically and ideologically the fullest representation of who I am as an artist and as a human\,” she says. A preacher’s kid\, a Black woman\, a Butch lesbian\, and a proud Southerner who sings social justice music right alongside ‘traditional’ Country and Americana music\, Matthews is reclaiming not just of the space Black artists have been denied in Country and Americana music\, not just of the space LGBTQ people have been denied in communities of faith\, not just of the autonomy women have been denied over their own bodies\, she is\nreclaiming the South that raised her.
