SUMMARY:Mr. Mike's Music - Mixed Age Music Class (Summer 2025)
DESCRIPTION:from May 4 to June 29 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (except May 25)Register HereEach week in Music Together® Mixed-Age Classes your babies\, toddlers\, preschoolers\, and the grownups who love them® gather for 45 minutes of fun-filled family music time. Your teacher will lead you and the other families in music activities ranging from lullabies to full-on jam sessions (with child-friendly instruments\, of course). It’s so much fun you won’t realize how much learning is taking place! \nYou’ll take home the award-winning music used in class\, along with an illustrated songbook and other resources. As you discover new ways to play with music all week long\, you’ll support your child’s music learning and overall development—even if you don’t think of yourself as a great singer or dancer. \nWhy Mixed Ages? \nChild development researchers discovered that grouping children of different ages in one class encourages natural\, family-style learning\, so Music Together developed the Mixed-Age Music Class. In this group music class in Washington\, DC\, everyone participates at their own levels: babies vocalize\, listen\, and observe; toddlers play and experiment; and preschoolers build confidence as they emerge as classroom leaders. Grownups are happy because everyone can come to class together. \n“My husband teases me because whenever I mention Music Together to anyone\, he always pipes up my next line which is ‘best money we ever spent.’ I truly mean it. Kudos to Ken and Lili for a program that outshines any other I have seen around.” —Kim\, Princeton\, NJ \n \nThis time slot includes three separate classes per week\, starting at 9:00 AM\, 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM respectfully.

SUMMARY:At Issue: The Dismantling of Public Health Institutions Featuring Experts Dr. John Brooks and Dr. Anne Schuchat
DESCRIPTION:from May 4 to June 29 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (except May 25)Register HereDr. John Brooks is the former Chief Medical Officer at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of HIV Prevention. Dr. Anne Schuchat was Principal Deputy Director at the CDC from 2015-2021 and served twice as acting director. The discussion will be moderated by Nicholas Florko who writes about health issues for The Atlantic \nHill Center launched its new public affairs discussion series\, At Issue in April. The series will examine the many critical issues we are faced with today. The Trump administration has targeted the American scientific enterprise. It has slashed or frozen budgets at the National Institutes of Health\, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\, and The National Science Foundation\, among other agencies. It has fired or defunded thousands of researchers. As New York Times science editor Alan Burdick writes\, “The chaos is confusing: Isn’t science a force for good? Hasn’t it contained disease?” (suddenly) “facts are elite\, facts are fungible\, facts are false. And once nothing is true\, anything can be true.” \nDr. Brooks and Dr. Schuchat will examine the short and long term consequences of gutting America’s public health institutions. \nRecently\, Dr. Schuchat delivered an opening statement before a subcommittee of Congress  in which she explained how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) protects Americans’ health. \nProblems don’t go away or magically disappear when we stop tracking them. They just are much harder to deal with once they become so big\, that we can’t ignore them anymore. \nWe are all at greater risk from the seemingly indiscriminate cuts to the nation’s core public health capacity and the effects go beyond the reduction in forces and budget cuts at CDC. The restrictions on CDC experts’ communication\, at a time of excruciatingly confusing messaging from top HHS leadership\, is making it harder to control measles outbreaks and threatening a resurgence of other vaccine-preventable diseases. \nAnd Dr. Brooks notes: \nThe chaotic cuts we’re seeing to U.S. public health might yield short-term savings but will substantially increase preventable injury\, illness and suffering with a much greater long-term cost. \nDr. John T. Brooks is an internist and clinical infectious diseases expert who worked for 26 years as a medical officer and epidemiologist at the US Centers for Disease Control. Prior to his retirement in 2024\, he served for ten years as the Chief Medical Officer to the CDC’s Division of HIV Prevention. Dr. Brooks also led CDC teams during emergency responses to anthrax\, SARS\, influenza\, HIV\, Ebola\, Zika\, and mpox\, and served for two years as the chief medical officer for CDC’s COVID-19 Response. Dr. Brooks has published more than 250 peer-reviewed papers and participates in the formation of multiple national infectious disease guidelines. Dr. Brooks came to CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer in 1998 after completing medical school\, a residency in internal medicine\, and a fellowship in infectious diseases through Harvard Medical School. \nDr. Anne Schuchat is an internist and epidemiologist who was Principal Deputy Director at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2015-2021 and served twice as acting director. She was the first Director of CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) from 2005-2015. Schuchat joined CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer in 1988 and played key roles in numerous emergency responses including the COVID-19 pandemic\, the 2019 outbreak of vaping associated lung injuries\, the West Africa Ebola epidemic\, 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic\, and the 2003 SARS outbreak where she deployed to Beijing. In the 1990’s\, Dr. Schuchat spearheaded US guidelines which have prevented more than 100\,000 life-threatening group B streptococcal infections in newborns so far. She was elected to the National Academy of Medicine and received the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Schuchat retired as a Rear Admiral (upper half) in the Commissioned Corps of the USPHS in 2018 and from CDC in 2021 \nNicholas Florko is a staff writer at The Atlantic. He covers how business and policy affect our well-being\, with a focus on products that make us sick. Before joining The Atlantic in 2024\, Nick was a reporter for STAT covering the commercial determinants of health and the FDA. In 2023\, Nick was a finalist for a National Magazine Award and the Livingston Award for his reporting on hepatitis C in prisons.

Weaving together the ancient sound and haunting melodies of the rabab\, a 2\,500 year-old instrument from Afghanistan\, with bold trumpet lines and anthemic Punjabi vocals\, Qais and Sonny ground their music in ancestral wisdom and usher us into the future with their uplifting new sound. Drawing inspiration from hundreds of years old mystical poetry from the Sikh\, Sufi\, and radical bhakti traditions\, their music centers oneness and connection in times of increasing division and hierarchy. \nThe collaboration between Qais Essar and Sonny Singh launches in Spring 2025\, when they begin releasing new music from their forthcoming album SANGAT. Band members include\, Qais Essar – rabab\, Sonny Singh – vocals\, trumpet\, harmonium\, Ria Modak – acoustic guitar\, vocals\, Sukhmani Kaur – tabla\, percussion \n“Sangat is a term Sikhs use to refer to beloved community\,” explains Singh. “We often use the term to refer to the congregation in a gurdwara [Sikh house of worship]\, but to me\, sangat is something much broader. My beloved community transcends ethnic\, religious and national boundaries.” Essar adds\, “In this climate of increasing attacks on the marginalized\, including the communities Sonny and I are a part of\, we hope this new music inspires solidarity and unity.” \nAbout Jim Thomson: Jim Thomson is an independent DIY music producer based in Washington DC who specializes in booking\, live music production\, artist management\, DJ events\, and record releases. SUMMARY:Master Chef: Featuring Magpie and the Tiger Chefs Caleb Jang and Roren Choi: Mastering the Fundamentals of Korean Samgyetang Chicken and Ginseng Soup
DESCRIPTION:from May 4 to June 29 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (except May 25)Register HereMagpie and the Tiger Chefs Caleb Jang and Roren Choi once again bring their magic to Hill Center’s kitchen for a day of cooking and eating.  Koreans have a unique tradition of consuming hot food\, particularly hot soups\, during the summer months. This practice is believed to help balance the body’s internal heat and relieve the discomfort caused by the extreme heat and humidity. Samgyetang\, a very popular chicken and ginseng soup\, is a prime example of this tradition. Caleb and Roren will also feature a variation that is closer to an American chicken and dumpling soup as well as some summer style banchan side dishes (dishes served alongside rice and a main course. These small plates are designed to add flavor and variety to the meal\, often incorporating a mix of textures and tastes). Come enjoy a Korean family style meal with your neighbors and friends. \nChefs Jang and Choi will share their expertise\, offering insights into Korean culinary traditions and modern techniques. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of Korean flavors and its history\, cooking methods\, and their ingredients\, empowering you to recreate these dishes at home and experiment with your own creations. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from talented Korean American chefs and take your cooking to the next level! \nMagpie and the Tiger\, the beloved Petworth\, DC eatery\, opened in January 2022. Touting creative food\, it garnered immediate success and stellar reviews. Read The Washington Post’s Tom Sietsema’s review here: Washington Post Review \nThe name references Korea’s national bird\, a symbol of good fortune and the belief\, stemming from folklore\, of the tiger’s protective character. Magpie and the Tiger closed its brick-and-mortar location\, leaving its legion of fans clamoring for more\, so Jang and Choi have pivoted\, and have numerous ambitious plans for their new brand – including Hill Center cooking classes. \nRoren Choi began her professional cooking career slinging ramen at Momofuku DC. After a year of working there\, she moved on to become a cook at Tail Up Goat\, where she moved her way up quickly to become sous chef of this Michelin-starred kitchen. She eventually left and helped open their sister restaurant Reveler’s Hour as the pasta\, bread\, and butchery chef. \nCaleb Jang spent time as the sous chef of DC’s late restaurant darling\, Himitsu. Craving a desire to expand his skill set\, Caleb then moved on to become one of the pastry chefs at Seylou Bakery – inching closer every day to become better at making their famed whole grain croissants. From there\, Caleb opened Magpie and the Tiger as the executive chef and co-owner/operator and enjoyed many successes and rave reviews. \nComplimentary beer and wine will be served. \nPLEASE NOTE: Tickets are non-refundable. We apologize for any inconvenience. \n

SUMMARY:Master Chef Featuring Award-Winning Pastry Chef Rochelle Cooper of The Duck & The Peach: Creative Summer Tortes
DESCRIPTION:from May 4 to June 29 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (except May 25)Register HereChef Rochelle will demonstrate creative summer inspired tortes with a new take on buttercream for a seasonal flavor punch. Included will be quick gluten free recipes and exciting flavor combinations for a fun new outlook on cakes that are delicious and ingredient forward.  \n \nRochelle is a Rammy Award-winning pastry chef who learned to love baking at a young age\, making traditional desserts for the holidays with her mom. This hobby grew into a passion and she found herself at Johnson and Wales Culinary School in Providence. Her talent for the pastry arts was accompanied by a joy brought by sharing knowledge and Ideas with others as a teaching assistant. Professors encouraged her to pursue a masters in education and a year later she wrapped up a graduate program at Pennsylvania State University. It didn’t take long for Rochelle to miss the rush of restaurants and found herself in Washington\, DC. Breaking out at Range by Bryan Voltaggio and working under the renowned Chris Ford there. The whimsy\, science\, and storytelling of Minibar drew her further downtown where she spent years in the two Michelin starred kitchen and went on to become a research and development chef for Jose Andres team. Kat Petonito\, a former colleague and friend\, enticed Rochelle to join Eastern Point Collective (The Duck & The Peach\, La Collina\, The Wells) to begin her own pastry program. Inspiration for her desserts comes from nostalgia and seasonal ingredients available locally. Rochelle also has a knack for sustainability and always finding ways to cross utilize savory and bar preparations in her work. Her latest venture\, an Ice Cream Shoppe-Up that quite literally churns excess product into delicious flavors inspired by the team’s childhood favorites. As a new mom\, Rochelle has seen the struggles that parents and children face everyday\, she uses her platform to advocate for affordable and accessible childcare\, as well as a national parental leave policy with groups like MAPP and Regarding Her DC. Rochelle spearheads the Cookie Kindness Project\, a group of pastry chefs\, bakers\, and food writers whose exclusive cookie collections  have raised over $50\,000 for local non-profits focused on kids and families. \nComplimentary wine will be available. \nPLEASE NOTE: Tickets are non-refundable. Desperate to salvage the showcase\, Rose approached Brian\, who she knew fronted Canadian celtic rock band Enter the Haggis. She thrust a guitar into Brian’s hands\, pulled him onstage\, and the two just clicked. \nFour years and hundreds of shows later\, the duo was booked to play a closing slot at a Colorado festival\, so they hired a bass player and drummer to fill out their sound. By the oddest of coincidences\, their hired bandmates’ flights were canceled the day of the show. A frantic Facebook post introduced Brian and Rose to local musician Caroline Browning\, who joined them on bass for the weekend. Once again\, the chemistry was undeniable\, and House of Hamill became a trio. The band’s latest release\, “Wildfire\,”  marks House of Hamill’s most compelling work to date. Featuring their strongest and most exciting songwriting\, “Wildfire” is filled with lyrical depth\, sophisticated vocal and instrumental arrangements\, and hooks that are simply irresistible. This album captures the vibrant energy and creativity that have become the hallmarks of a House of Hamill live show. Whether they’re ripping through a set of original jigs and reels\, adding lush three-part harmonies into traditional folk ballads\, or cracking up an audience with stories from the road\, House of Hamill puts on a show that captivates audiences from the very first note. \nToday\, Pennsylvania-based House of Hamill is a fixture on festival stages across the US\, and have shared their music and stories on the country’s premier folk stages. Their original song “Banks of the Brandywine” was a Grand Prize winner in the 2024 John Lennon Songwriting Contest\, and the video for their all-violin cover of “Sweet Child O’ Mine” amassed over 16 million views on Facebook\, where it was shared over 400\,000 times.

SUMMARY:Stone Room Concerts @ Hill Center Featuring Modern Folk/Americana Sextet Buffalo Rose
DESCRIPTION:from May 4 to June 29 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (except May 25)Register HereCurated and Hosted by Stone Room Concerts Founder David Holiday \nHill Center is thrilled to welcome back the phenomenal Buffalo Rose following their sold-out 2024 Concert. \n“How can a band be loose and tight at the same time? Listen to Buffalo Rose for the answer. I flat love them.” \n— Tom Paxton\, folk music legend and GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient \nBuffalo Rose is a charismatic six-piece modern folk/Americana band from Pittsburgh\, PA. They take the singer-songwriter tradition to a new level by crafting original songs which are emotive\, meticulously arranged\, and inspired by a world of idiosyncratic influences that never let a dull or predictable moment creep in. \nThe band’s most recent release Again\, Again\, Again has brought forth a shimmering and sophisticated sound to their well crafted songs.  A follow up to their 2022 EP Rabbit\, a project created in collaboration with Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Tom Paxton\, they released two records last year and show no signs of slowing down. Their 2018 debut album\, The Soil and the Seed\, established them as a vocal\, instrumental\, and creative force. Since then\, Buffalo Rose has dropped two EPs\, 2019’s Big Stampede and 2020’s Borrowed and Blue\, opened for the Wood Brothers\, Mipso\, Pokey LaFarge\, Tyler Childers\, Infamous Stringdusters\, and shared a festival stage with the legendary Sam Bush. \nBuffalo Rose’s lineup of Lucy Clabby (vocals)\, Margot Jezerc (vocals)\, Bryce Rabideau (mandolin)\, Malcolm Inglis (dobro)\, Jason Rafalak (upright bass)\, and Shane McLaughlin (guitar\, vocals) pushes itself and each other far beyond their perceived limits and blends their diverse and atypical approach to songwriting with the desire to see how unique a song can get and still feel like home. They use powerful vocal harmonies\, strong playing\, and an original vision to operate at every possible emotional level and put on dynamic live shows that are unforgettable experiences. They go from up and moving to sad and sweet and back again\, bringing the entire audience along. \nThis combination of artistry and enthusiasm makes Buffalo Rose one of the most vital and important groups working today. Rather than play the folk music of the past\, the band gleefully combines genres and ideas together to move acoustic music forward to a new\, contemporary place without ever losing sight of its roots. Fans of Lake Street Dive\, Nickel Creek\, and Punch Brothers will find much to like in this crew. Anyone seeking compelling new acoustic music needs to join Buffalo Rose in the future right now. \n“The balancing act that the six musicians of Buffalo Rose achieve is something to be celebrated. The group match each other’s energy both in instances of quiet tenderness and rich swells… that vocal blend not only sets the mood for the folk tunes but also makes those dynamic changes seem so fluid.” \n— NPR Music \nAbout David Holiday: David Holiday — a lifelong music aficionado who in his youth performed with the Grammy-winning Texas Boys Choir and numerous youth orchestras and ensembles\, founded Stone Room Concerts together with his wife in 2012 to bring  intimate\, high-quality performances by local\, national and international independent musicians to the DMV area.  He has hosted more than 200 shows over the past decade in homes\, churches and other eclectic venues\, including for several years at Bikenetic\,a full service bicycle shop in Falls Church. Stone Room Concerts also serves as the fiscal agent for Niñas Arriba\, a charitable project of Latin Grammy-nominee Gina Chavez and their wife Jodi Granado\, which they set up to support the college education of young women in El Salvador and Central America.  In keeping with his long standing professional involvement with Central America\, Holiday is part of a team supporting the Maya Kaqchikel musician Sara Curruchich.  In 2023\, he had the privilege of serving as tour manager for Curruchich’s first-ever US tour\, including major venues and festivals in New York\, California\, Colorado and Illinois. \n \n
