SUMMARY:Stone Room Concerts @ Hill Center Featuring Arco & Aire: Contemporary Tango Music
DESCRIPTION:from July 1 to August 19 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmRegister HereFeaturing Bandoneonist\, Heyni Solera and Cellist Maxfield Wollam-Fisher \nFor the past seven years\, Heyni Solera and Maxfield Wollam-Fisher have been actively working together in bringing live tango music to the Washington D.C. area through their performances with Da Capo Tango. Their collaboration led to their unique instrumentation as a cello/bandoneon duo. This dynamic duo focuses on playing tangos not commonly played on the dance floor and tangos written by composers who are alive today. Their mission is to foster a sense of community and collaboration between tango musicians\, organizers\, and dancers. They also provide outreach to new audiences that may not be aware of tango’s resurgence by working with directors and artists from other genres. In 2021\, Arco & Aire released their first EP\, Overture\, whose track\, “La Bordona” won the Best Latin Song for the 2022 Wammie Awards. In the summer of 2024 they released their first full album\, Una Noche Entre Sueños\, featuring eight commissions from contemporary tango composers.” \nAbout Heyni Solera:  Praised for her “soulful bandoneón” (Washington Classical Review)\, Heyni Solera is a sought after bandoneonist in Washington\, D.C. Heyni has enjoyed a career in the US and abroad performing in Argentina\, Canada and Australia and collaborating with prominent tango artists such as Ramiro Boero\, Julian Peralta\, Pablo Jaurena\, Santiago Segret\, Pedro Giraudo and many more. In 2019\, Heyni was a member of the Argentine tango orchestra schools La Orquesta de Tango de la Una and the Conservatorio Superior de “Manuel de Falla”\, where she had the opportunity to perform in the prestigious Centro Cultural Kirchner. \nAbout Maxfield Wollam-Fisher:  As a musician who revels in versatility\, Maxfield enjoys collaborating in every genre from the traditional to avant garde\, folk to pop. Recently he could be found on Becky G’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert\, Miss Lauryn Hill’s concert at the Capital One Arena in Washington\, DC\, and performing and recording tango in Argentina and around the United States. As a tango musician for nearly fifteen years\, Maxfield has performed with the likes of Julian Peralta\, Ramiro Boero\, Stratos Achlatis\, Victor LaVallen\, Pablo Zeigler and many others. SUMMARY:Master Chef: South Asian Street Food Featuring Tapori & Daru Chef\, Suresh Sundas\, 2026 James Beard Award & RAMMY Finalist
DESCRIPTION:from July 1 to August 19 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmRegister HereHill Center is thrilled to welcome acclaimed Chef Suresh Sundas whose class will feature several standout dishes from Tapori and Daru. \nChef Suresh Sundas’ (James Beard Foundation Finalist: Best Chef Mid-Atlantic 2026\, RAMMY Rising Culinary star of the year 2025 winner\, Rammy 2022 Best new restaurant\, Food & Wine Magazine 2024 Global Tastemaker) cooking journey began in his mom’s home kitchen in the rural Pathari village of the Morang district of his native Nepal. He grew up watching her prepare traditional dishes with much love and care called Raksi- which is ‘local Daru’ at home\, igniting his passion for cooking. \nAfter working in Nepal at Hotel Deurali in 2001\, he arrived in the US in 2007 on an immigrant visa\, and when he came to the United States he had no idea how to find a job and worked at 7-11\, living in an apartment shared with family and friends. He always used to cook meals for everyone\, and one day he made chicken curry and was told he needed to work in a restaurant- which began his quest for culinary ambition. \nOver time\, experimenting with different ingredients and techniques became a creative outlet\, and he realized how much joy food can bring to people. His philosophy about food and dining centers around creating dishes that are approachable and creates experiences that delights senses and respects both the ingredients and the environment. He believes in using fresh\, high-quality ingredients and prioritizes sustainability by sourcing locally whenever possible. His approach to menu creation is rooted in a balance of seasonal flavors and cultural diversity\, aiming to offer a range of options that cater various tastes and dietary preferences. \nEvery dish created is deeply connected to its origins—whether that’s through traditional techniques\, regional flavors\, or the cultural stories behind the ingredients. He feels that food with roots tells a story and offers a sense of authenticity and connection that gives the dining experience new heights. \nLearn more about Tapori and Daru here. \nComplimentary beer and wine will be served. \nPLEASE NOTE: Tickets are non-refundable. SUMMARY:Talk of the Hill with Bill Press Featuring NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday Host Scott Simon
DESCRIPTION:from July 1 to August 19 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmRegister HereSimon discusses and reads from his charming new book\, Ulysses S. Cat And Other Animals I Have Known \n“Scott Simon’s work\, filled with irresistible\, heartfelt encounters and journeys with animals\, from family hearth to hot spots around the world\, will bring you insights and joy.” ―Amy Tan \nScott Simon’s household makes little distinction between humans and other animals. Whether two-legged or four-\, flesh-covered\, fur-covered\, feathered\, or gilled—everyone is family. Today\, Simon lives with the haiku-writing and absolument charmant French poodle Daisy and the daringly audacious foster cat Gato Blanco. But that’s just the start. \nIn ULYSSES S. CAT AND OTHER ANIMALS I HAVE KNOWN [W. W. Norton & Company; May 5\, 2026; $24.99 hardcover]\, Simon warmly philosophizes on the unforgettable and utterly ordinary moments between species\, along with their joys\, worries\, love\, and humor. Depicting a lifetime of remarkable\, enduring relationships with pets\, Simon explores the difficulty of expressing the strong ties we feel: a kinship between humans and animals that’s more familial than “owner\,” and more mutual than “caregiver” or “guardian.” \nPaired with the charming\, whimsical illustrations of renowned New Yorker cartoonist Liana Finck\, Simon reflects on how pets unlock our hearts and burrow into our lives\, beginning with his family’s dog guiding his first steps. From a cat who escaped the British Embassy (Simon had to promise to raise her as British) and street dogs during Sarajevo’s siege to a series of beta fish all named Salman Fishdie and an energetic\, cage-escaping hamster Bagel\, he reveals how our animals change not just our lives but how we see the world. ULYSSES S. CAT is an enchanting and thoughtful profusion of exuberant memories and musings on a life spent in animal company. \nScott Simon hosts NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday and Up First\, and is also a special contributor to CBS News Sunday Morning. A winner of Emmy and Peabody Awards\, he is in the Radio Hall of Fame and the Illinois Lincoln Academy. He lives in Washington\, DC\, with his wife and two daughters. \nBill Press began his career as a political insider and media commentator on KABC-TV and KCOP-TV\, both in Los Angeles. Over the years\, he has received numerous awards for his work\, including four Emmys and a Golden Mike Award. He also served as aide to California Governor Jerry Brown and waChair of the California Democratic Party from 1993 to 1996. \nThe former co-host of MSNBC’s Buchanan and Press\, CNN’s Crossfire and The Spin Room\, Press has built a national reputation on thought-provoking and humorous insights from the left side of the political aisle. Press is the author of ten books and is the host of the twice-weekly “The Bill Press Pod” – available on Google\, Apple\, Spotify\, or Tune-In. He’s a member of the White House press corps. He also writes a weekly column for The Hill and a weekly syndicated newspaper column distributed by Tribune Media Services. \n \nEast City Bookshop will have books for sale and signing.

SUMMARY:Stone Room Concerts @ Hill Center Featuring Crys Matthews\, 2025 International Folk Music Award's Artist of the Year
DESCRIPTION:from July 1 to August 19 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmRegister HereA troubadour of truth\, Nashville resident Crys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. An award-winning\, prolific lyricist and composer\, Matthews blends Country\, Americana\, Folk\, Blues\, and Bluegrass into a bold\, complex performance steeped in traditional melodies punctuated by honest\, original lyrics. She is made for these times.\n\n\n \n\n\nOf Matthews\, ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says\, “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice\, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times.” \nJustin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation notes\, her gift is a “reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” In her own words\, Matthews says her mission is: “to amplify the voices of the unheard\, to shed light on the unseen\, and to be a steadfast reminder that hope and love are the truest pathways to equity and justice.” Her new album is an embodiment of and a testament to that mission. \nA daughter of the South by way of Nashville now and North Carolina forever\, and the self-proclaimed poster child of intersectionality\, Matthews is boldly answering those questions on her new album aptly titled Reclamation. \n“This album is both sonically and ideologically the fullest representation of who I am as an artist and as a human\,” she says. A preacher’s kid\, a Black woman\, a Butch lesbian\, and a proud Southerner who sings social justice music right alongside ‘traditional’ Country and Americana music\, Matthews is reclaiming not just of the space Black artists have been denied in Country and Americana music\, not just of the space LGBTQ people have been denied in communities of faith\, not just of the autonomy women have been denied over their own bodies\, she is\nreclaiming the South that raised her.

SUMMARY:Discover the Terroir: A Maryland and Virginia Wine Journey featuring Wine Expert Leslie Frelow
DESCRIPTION:from July 1 to August 19 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmRegister HereDiscover the depth\, resilience\, and character of Mid‑Atlantic winemaking at this special tasting featuring standout wines from Maryland and Virginia. Join us for an afternoon that blends education\, regional pride\, and delicious exploration. \nGuests will enjoy a guided tasting of five locally crafted wines\, each selected to showcase the diversity and evolving style of our region. Representatives from both a Maryland and a Virginia vineyard will share firsthand insights into what it takes to grow grapes in the Mid‑Atlantic — from navigating our unique climate to crafting wines that reflect this place. \nThis year’s discussion will also highlight the recent frost events that have impacted vineyards across the East Coast. Learn how growers are adapting\, what it means for future vintages\, and why regional winemakers remain committed to innovation and quality. \nLight bites will be served to complement the tasting. Whether you’re a seasoned wine lover or simply curious about local wine\, this experience offers a rare behind‑the‑scenes look at the people and practices shaping Maryland and Virginia wine today. \nThe Wine Concierge is a minority-owned and woman-owned business founded by Leslie Frelow\, who previously worked for several years in the public policy industry for public and non-for-profit organizations. Following her passion\, Ms. Frelow’s beginnings with her wine-focused business\, Vino 301 Wine Concierge\, started in January 2013 with regional wine tours and special events programs. She holds a Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits (WSET). Encouraged and inspired by her industry peers\, she has had the honor of participating as a judge in regional wine competitions\, which included the 2019 Maryland Governor Cup and Maryland’s Comptroller’s Cup. \nThe excitement revolving around Ms. Frelow’s wine tourism and education programs\, as well as her dedication to supporting winemakers of color and women-owned wineries\, have inspired her to launch The Wine Concierge’s unique internet retailer business in the District of Columbia in 2020. \nMs. Frelow has also discovered ways to celebrate minority-owned winemakers and connect with like-minded wine enthusiasts through the podcast\, The Swirl Suite\, hosted by Sarita Cheaves\, Tanisha Townsend\, Glynis Hill\, and Ms. Frelow. The podcast (https://www.swirlsuite.com/)\, which features engaging interviews with wine professionals such as Melissa Schulte of Black Ankle Vineyards\, Eric Turner of Hip Hop Juice Box\, Burnie Williams of Chats Wine & Liquor\, and winemakers at the Essence Wine Festival\, serves as an inspiring resource for established and aspiring wine entrepreneurs. \n
