SUMMARY:Profs & Pints DC: The Search for Life Beyond Earth
DESCRIPTION:from May 4 to June 29 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (except May 25)Register HereProfs and Pints DC presents: “The Search for Life Beyond Earth\,” with Måns Holmberg\, postdoctoral researcher at the Space Telescope Science Institute and part of a team of astronomers looking for chemical traces of life on distant exoplanets. \nAre we alone in the universe? \nWhile many of us have pondered that question\, astronomer Måns Holmberg of Baltimore’s Space Telescope Science Institute is seriously focused on answering it. Last year he was part of a Cambridge-led team of astronomers who generated worldwide headlines by announcing that they had discovered potential evidence of a gas produced almost exclusively by life in the James Webb Space Telescope’s data from the atmosphere of a distant world. \nDr. Holmberg will talk about how the search for life elsewhere is being conducted and what strides are being made on that front. He’ll describe what it would take to confirm signs of life on such a world\, what challenges remain\, and how the next wave of observations could ultimately tip the scales. \nRecent observations from JWST have revealed something extraordinary: the atmosphere of planet K2-18 b contains carbon-based molecules like methane and carbon dioxide and possibly even dimethyl sulfide (DMS)\, a gas that\, on Earth\, is almost exclusively produced by life. Dr. Holmberg will discuss what makes DMS a compelling (though not yet definitive) biosignature candidate. \nYou’ll emerge from the talk with a much richer appreciation of the immense possibilities out there among the stars. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.) \nGet your tickets today!

SUMMARY:Stone Room Concerts @ Hill Center Featuring Eastern-European Jewish Folk Music with Seth Kibel & The Kleztet
DESCRIPTION:from May 4 to June 29 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (except May 25)Register HereSeth Kibel & The Kleztet will entertain and delight with a program focused on upbeat klezmer music (Eastern-European Jewish folk music) along with some detours into Yiddish folk song\, jazz\, swing\, and the Great American Songbook. Think the Brothers Gershwin\, Irving Berlin\, Jerome Kern\, Duke Ellington\, Benny Goodman\, and more! Seth and his band will have your toes a-tappin’ and make you want to dance in the aisles. Historical commentary (some of which might actually be true) and humorous anecdotes from Kibel will provide an insightful context for their selections. \nKlezmer\, which literally means “tool of song” in Yiddish\, is the secular folk music of the Jews of Central and Eastern Europe. In the first decades of the 1900s\, this music flourished not only in the Old World but also in the New\, in the immigrant community of New York City. There\, the sounds of the European “fiddler on the roof” mixed with the sounds of early jazz and Tin Pan Alley. The result was a quintessentially American sound. \n \nSeth Kibel is one of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier woodwind specialists\, working with some of the best bands in klezmer\, jazz\, swing\, and more. Wowing audiences on clarinet\, flute\, and saxophone\, Seth has made a name for himself in the Washington/Baltimore region and beyond. He is a featured performer with The Kleztet\, Bay Jazz Project\, Music Pilgrim Trio\, Daryl Davis Band\, The Natty Beaux\, and more. Winner of 28 Washington Area Music Awards (Wammies)\, including “Best World Music Instrumentalist” (2003-11) and “Best Jazz Instrumentalist” (2005\, 2007-8\, 2011-14). His most recent recording\, “Clown with a Stick\,” was released in May 2023 on the Azalea City Recordings record label. He’s won numerous prizes in the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest (MASC) including the Grand Prize in 2016 and a Gold Prize in 2022. When he’s not performing\, Seth lectures on music history for numerous institutions\, including the Osher Lifelong Learning programs at Johns Hopkins and Towson Universities. In addition to Kibel\, the band features Sean Lane — piano\, Derek Wiegmann — double bass\, and Joey Antico — double bass. \nDavid Holiday\, a lifelong music aficionado \, founded Stone Room Concerts together with his wife in 2012 to bring intimate\, high-quality performances by local\, national\, and international independent musicians to the DMV area. He has curated and hosted well over 200 concerts over the past decade in his home\, churches\, and Hill Center.

SUMMARY:Overbeck Lecture: Shakespeare Re-imagined for the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:from May 4 to June 29 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (except May 25)Register HereIs Shakespeare relevant today? Do we really need a building dedicated to him and his times in the 21st century\, when we are so heavily reliant on the virtual world? The Folger Shakespeare Library\, a sleek expression of early 20th century neoclassicism\, stands as one of the most interesting\, privately held buildings on Capitol Hill. The recent re-opening of the Library after a multi-year construction project revealed a major addition which significantly expanded public spaces\, increased accessibility\, and transformed the visitor experience. \nAt the March 30 Overbeck Capitol Hill History lecture\, the illustrated presentation will provide a brief look at the building’s initial purpose and later changes\, with a major focus on the what\, how\, and why behind its most recent expansion in both building and presentation of Shakespeare’s world. \nMs. Eig\, architectural historian\, historic preservation specialist\, and CEO of EHT Traceries\, Inc.\, consulted with the Folger through the extended renovation process. Her work involved extensive documentation of the historic interior spaces\, updating the building’s landmark status\, working with architects to find sensitive ways to adapt the building\, and guiding the historic approvals process. \nThe Shakespeare Re-imagined lecture will be held Monday\, March 30\, at Hill Center\, Old Naval Hospital\, 921 Pennsylvania Avenue\, S.E. (www.hillcenterdc.org; 202-549-4172). Admission is free\, but a reservation is requested due to limited capacity. Reservations can be made starting March 12. Seating will begin at 6:30 pm; the PowerPoint presentation will begin at 7 pm.

SUMMARY:Acclaimed Irish\, Scottish\, and American Folk duo Rakish in Concert
DESCRIPTION:from May 4 to June 29 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (except May 25)Register HereHill Center is beyond thrilled to welcome back Maura Shawn Scanlin and Conor Hearn who comprise Rakish.\nTheir previous two concerts here sold out quickly\, so be sure to purchase your tickets early. \nRooted in tradition with an ear toward the future\, contemporary folk duo Rakish embodies earnest musical exploration and demonstrates an infectious playfulness on stage. In their sound together\, it is evident the two friends share an unbridled love for the traditional sounds of Celtic and American music\, and the tight ensemble of a group with years of collaboration under their belt. Strings Magazine says: “Explorative and versatile\, the duo draws evident inspiration from not just the deep and wide history of Scottish and Irish Celtic composition\, but also the precision-focused structures of classical chamber music and a whole array of improvisational styles.” \nKnown for her toneful and award-winning fiddle playing in the Celtic music world\, Maura Shawn Scanlin grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Maura is a 2-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and a winner of the Glenfiddich Fiddle Competition in Scotland. Her clawhammer banjo playing and songwriting\, also featured in the duo\, hold the regional music of her homeland close. Maura finds her niche combining influences from a widespread musical journey with the sounds she grew up around. \nSteeped in the Irish music communities of Washington D.C. and Baltimore\, MD where he was raised\, acclaimed guitarist Conor Hearn developed a keen interest in literary theory and poetry\, a unique well of material from which he draws unending musical inspiration. His settings of modernist poems\, like James Joyce’s Chamber Music\, epitomize the duo’s approach: the dexterous alchemy of the old and the new into something wholly Rakish. A keenly sought-after collaborative guitarist\, Conor performs with many of the most renowned names in Celtic music today. His guitar style combines bass and rhythm for a uniquely powerful and precise sound. \nRakish\, embracing the unconventional connotation of their namesake\, create and perform music with verve. Recent highlights of their travels include performances at the Library of Congress\, Celtic Colours International Music Festival\, Prince Edward Island’s Festival of Small Halls\, the Corvallis Celtic Festival\, and Official Showcases at Folk Alliance International. They have taught at esteemed fiddle camps across the country including Alasdair Fraser’s Sierra Fiddle Camp\, Folk College\, Katie McNally’s Boston States Fiddle Camp\, and Hanneke Cassel’s Pure Dead Brilliant Fiddle Weekend. \nOn Now\, O Now\, the duo’s sophomore release (out October 11\, 2024) it is clear Rakish cannot be pigeonholed into one genre and is most comfortable occupying the in-between. Together they journey through Celtic and Americana styles\, deftly showcasing how to bring forth something new from the deep well of tradition. They are touring their new album across the country throughout the fall of 2024 and into 2025.

SUMMARY:The Life of a Poet Featuring Brian Gilmore\, author of No More Worlds to Conquer: The Black Poet in Washington\, DC in Conversation with Poet/Editor Kyle Dargan
DESCRIPTION:from May 4 to June 29 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (except May 25)Register HereA history of Black poets in Washington\, DC\, reveals how they have reflected and transformed American cultural discourse \nThe discussion will feature poet Teri Ellen Cross Davis\, Folger Poetry Manager and eminent DC Poet\, Karl Carter \nWashington\, DC\, has long been home to a dynamic and vibrant African American literary community\, despite often being overshadowed by the literary worlds of New York and Chicago. In No More Worlds to Conquer\, the local poet Brian Gilmore uncovers the buried legacy of Black poets in Washington. He traces the literary life and politics of Black poets in the nation’s capital since Paul Laurence Dunbar\, showing how well-known American poets\, such as Sterling Brown and Jean Toomer\, were mentored in DC by poets like May Miller and Georgia Douglas Johnson and making the case for the city as a center of American literature. \nGilmore draws on meticulous research\, personal interviews\, and his own deep knowledge of the local literary community to connect generations of writers and document a poetic community that transcends Washington. He reveals the intricate intersections\, networks\, and influences that have shaped the city’s poets and how they have influenced American poetry for a century. \nMore than a historical account\, No More Worlds to Conquer is a personal exploration that bridges the past and the present. Gilmore\, who was born and raised in DC\, illuminates this history and reflects on his own place in its literary tradition. This multigenerational account will resonate with poetry enthusiasts\, local DC scholars\, and anyone interested in the rich traditions of African American literature. \n\nKyle Dargan is the author of the poetry collection Anagnorisis (TriQuarterly/Northwestern UP\, 2018)\, which was awarded the 2019 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize and longlisted for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in poetry. His four previous collections\, Honest Engine (2015)\, Logorrhea Dementia (2010)\, Bouquet of Hungers (2007) and The Listening (2003)–were all published by the University of Georgia Press. For his work\, he has received the Cave Canem Poetry Prize\, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award\, and grants from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. His books have also been finalists for the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award and the Eric Hoffer Awards Grand Prize. Dargan has partnered with the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities to produce poetry programming at the White House and Library of Congress. He’s worked with and supports a number of youth writing organizations\, such as 826DC\, Writopia Lab\, Young Writers Workshop and the Dodge Poetry high schools program. He is currently an Associate Professor of literature and Asst. Director of creative writing at American University\, as well as the founder and editor of POST NO ILLS magazine. He also works as a Managing Editor for Janelle Monae’s creative company\, Wondaland. Originally from Newark\, New Jersey\, Dargan is a graduate of Saint Benedict’s Prep\, The University of Virginia and Indiana University. \n\nBooks will be available for sale. A booksigning will follow the conversation.

SUMMARY:Global Sounds on the Hill Featuring ALASH\, Masters of Tuvan Throat Singing
DESCRIPTION:from May 4 to June 29 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (except May 25)Register Here“Utterly stunning…audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.” \n– The Washington Post \nCurated and hosted by iconic DC impressario and musician Jim Thomson \nALASH are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. Trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood\, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing in international xöömei competitions\, both as an ensemble and as individuals. At the same time\, they paid close attention to new trends coming out of the West. They have borrowed new ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music\, but they have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effort to make their music more hip. Alash first toured the U.S. under the sponsorship of the Open World Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then they have returned many times\, to the delight of American audiences. ALASH has twice performed at Hill Center — two of the most singular\, electric and enthralling concerts we’ve ever presented. This will sell out\, so purchase your tickets early. \n\n\n \nAbout Jim Thomson: Jim Thomson is an independent DIY music producer based in Washington DC who specializes in booking\, live music production\, artist management\, DJ events\, and record releases. In Washington DC he operates an ongoing live music series called Secret Planet DC that partners with various venues\, foundations\, and musicians all across the city to produce unique\, intimate\, and meaningful performances. He also owns and operates the Washington\, DC-based boutique record label Electric Cowbell Records as well as holding down and curating all vinyl DJ residencies at The Green Zone\, Cana\, La Shukran\, Daikaya\, Le Mont Royal\, Eaton Hotel\, the DC Record Fair\, and other bars and restaurants in the city. \nJim is also a lifelong musician and promoter\, playing drums as a founding member of GWAR\, The Alter-Natives (SST Records)\, Bio Ritmo\, CSC Funk Band\, Time Is Fire\, and he currently plays drums and percussion with Motherf*ckers JMB & Co with Geologist from Animal Collective. One of the first concerts he co-promoted was a Bad Brains show in Richmond\, Virginia in 1987 followed by years of concerts including surf guitar legend Dick Dale\, Knitting Factory tours\, Marc Ribot\, Charles Gayle\, Negativland\, Medeski\, Martin\, and Wood\, and many others.
