DESCRIPTION:from  May 6 to December 16  @  6:00 pm - 8:00 pmRegister HereInfluential D.C. chef and restaurateur Erik Bruner-Yang returns to Hill Center to lead a Cambodian inspired class celebrating Khmer New Year which is observed April 14-16. In Khmer\, it is called ‘ChaulChnam Thmey’ which means “enter the new year.” Erik is a multi James Beard Foundation award nominee and the chef-owner of Cambodian/Taiwanese influenced Maketto. Erik recently opened a cocktail bar on the H street corridor named Providencia. \n\nIn response to the Covid-19 pandemic\, Erik started a non-profit organization called the Power of 10 Initiative. Over the past few years this new initiative has provided over $1.2 million dollars in grants to restaurants all across the United States\, and has provided well over 500\,000 meals to communities in need. \nOver the past 12 years\, Erik has taught numerous Hill Center cooking classes and contributed several recipes to our cookbook\, A Taste of Hill Center\, including Sawmlaw M’choo Kroueng (Traditional Cambodian Soup)\, and Lime-Marinated Fish Salad. \nComplimentary beer and wine are included in the price of the ticket. \nErik’s classes sell out quickly\, so don’t hesitate to purchase your tickets ASAP. \nPLEASE NOTE: Tickets are non-refundable. SUMMARY:Basic Drawing Techniques: Drawing From an Image with Christine Vineyard
DESCRIPTION:from  May 6 to December 16  @  6:00 pm - 8:00 pmRegister HereThis course is designed for adults who wish to start drawing\, but aren’t sure where to begin! We will be working on basic drawing skills and techniques over the course of four classes. Our first class will serve as an introduction – trying out techniques and becoming familiar with materials. In the second class\, students will begin a drawing based on an image of their choice with guidance along the way\, as they put what we have learned to use. The following classes will be used as a way to complete details of our drawing\, add finishing touches and a short critique of everyone’s work! We hope you will join us to learn something new and maybe meet some friends along the way! \nPlease bring a hard copy image to draw from. It should be 4″x 6″ or larger (ex. preferably an image of a person where they are the focus of the image). All other materials are provided. \nThis Series will contain 3 adult art classes. Classes will take place on April 7th\, 21st and 28th.  \n \n“This class was so helpful! Love!\n\nReady to take your knitting further — and meet others who share your passion? Join The Knitting Club at Hill Center\, a warm\, social gathering for intermediate knitters. Led by Paula Lytle\, this class offers a supportive space to refine your skills\, experiment with new stitches or patterns\, and work on your personal projects. Along the way\, enjoy conversation and creativity over a complimentary glass of wine. Think of it as a night out with friends — with your knitting needles in hand.\n\nIf you’d like to hone in on your knitting skills with a manageable project\, a place to bring knitting problems or there is a new technique that they want to learn\, this is the class for you! Throughout the series of classes\, you will learn the skills necessary to make a wearable item or other knitted objects. The class is best suited for knitters who know how to cast-on\, knit\, purl\, and bind off.  Students will be introduced to shaping and construction. The class will be hands-on\, and the techniques taught will be based in students’ interests. The first class will include pattern selection. Possible techniques to be covered include lace and textured stitches\, color-work\, and knitting in the round. Classes now come with ‘office hours’ access to your knitting instructor\, Paula Lytle\, for coaching outside of class.\n\nPaula Lytle has lived on the Hill since 1997 and has been knitting for over 40 years. A former college professor\, she has taught knitting to both children and adults\, and one of her students now raises sheep!\n\nShe can be found on Ravelry under the userID Magla.\n\nIf you have yarn and needles which you would like to use\, please bring it to the class.

DESCRIPTION:from  May 6 to December 16  @  6:00 pm - 8:00 pmRegister HereA history of Black poets in Washington\, DC\, reveals how they have reflected and transformed American cultural discourse \nThe discussion will feature poet Teri Ellen Cross Davis\, Folger Poetry Manager and eminent DC Poet\, Karl Carter \nWashington\, DC\, has long been home to a dynamic and vibrant African American literary community\, despite often being overshadowed by the literary worlds of New York and Chicago. In No More Worlds to Conquer\, the local poet Brian Gilmore uncovers the buried legacy of Black poets in Washington. He traces the literary life and politics of Black poets in the nation’s capital since Paul Laurence Dunbar\, showing how well-known American poets\, such as Sterling Brown and Jean Toomer\, were mentored in DC by poets like May Miller and Georgia Douglas Johnson and making the case for the city as a center of American literature. \nGilmore draws on meticulous research\, personal interviews\, and his own deep knowledge of the local literary community to connect generations of writers and document a poetic community that transcends Washington. He reveals the intricate intersections\, networks\, and influences that have shaped the city’s poets and how they have influenced American poetry for a century. \nMore than a historical account\, No More Worlds to Conquer is a personal exploration that bridges the past and the present. Gilmore\, who was born and raised in DC\, illuminates this history and reflects on his own place in its literary tradition. This multigenerational account will resonate with poetry enthusiasts\, local DC scholars\, and anyone interested in the rich traditions of African American literature. \n\nKyle Dargan is the author of the poetry collection Anagnorisis (TriQuarterly/Northwestern UP\, 2018)\, which was awarded the 2019 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize and longlisted for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in poetry. His four previous collections\, Honest Engine (2015)\, Logorrhea Dementia (2010)\, Bouquet of Hungers (2007) and The Listening (2003)–were all published by the University of Georgia Press. For his work\, he has received the Cave Canem Poetry Prize\, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award\, and grants from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. His books have also been finalists for the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award and the Eric Hoffer Awards Grand Prize. Dargan has partnered with the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities to produce poetry programming at the White House and Library of Congress. He’s worked with and supports a number of youth writing organizations\, such as 826DC\, Writopia Lab\, Young Writers Workshop and the Dodge Poetry high schools program. He is currently an Associate Professor of literature and Asst. Director of creative writing at American University\, as well as the founder and editor of POST NO ILLS magazine. He also works as a Managing Editor for Janelle Monae’s creative company\, Wondaland. Originally from Newark\, New Jersey\, Dargan is a graduate of Saint Benedict’s Prep\, The University of Virginia and Indiana University. \n\nBooks will be available for sale. DESCRIPTION:from  May 6 to December 16  @  6:00 pm - 8:00 pmRegister Here“Utterly stunning…audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.”  \n– The Washington Post \nCurated and hosted by iconic DC impressario and musician Jim Thomson \nALASH are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. Trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood\, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing in international xöömei competitions\, both as an ensemble and as individuals. At the same time\, they paid close attention to new trends coming out of the West. They have borrowed new ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music\, but they have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effort to make their music more hip. Alash first toured the U.S. under the sponsorship of the Open World Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then they have returned many times\, to the delight of American audiences. ALASH has twice performed  at Hill Center — two of the most singular\, electric and enthralling concerts we’ve ever presented. In Washington DC he operates an ongoing live music series called Secret Planet DC that partners with various venues\, foundations\, and musicians all across the city to produce unique\, intimate\, and meaningful performances. He also owns and operates the Washington\, DC-based boutique record label Electric Cowbell Records as well as holding down and curating all vinyl DJ residencies at The Green Zone\, Cana\, La Shukran\, Daikaya\, Le Mont Royal\, Eaton Hotel\, the DC Record Fair\, and other bars and restaurants in the city. \nJim is also a lifelong musician and promoter\, playing drums as a founding member of GWAR\, The Alter-Natives (SST Records)\, Bio Ritmo\, CSC Funk Band\, Time Is Fire\, and he currently plays drums and percussion with Motherf*ckers JMB & Co with Geologist from Animal Collective. Through immersive reporting and on-the-ground access\, the film explores how a movement once largely confined to the margins of white evangelical culture has gained new visibility and political power. \n\n“My reporting for this hour began early last year when I visited Moscow\, Idaho to interview Pastor Douglas Wilson. The response to that report was overwhelming and highlighted the need to better understand this movement working to redefine America as a Christian nation in the home\, in a marriage\, in schools and in government\,” said Brown.  “We embedded with a community under Pastor Wilson’s umbrella and spoke to women who have left the church and are now sounding the alarm. She escaped at 19 and now lives with her husband and 4 children and has dedicated her life to helping others escape their cults. She is a co-founder of DeconstructionDoulas.com\, a peer support network that helps people leave high-control religious communities and supports those who have escaped.\nKatie Jennings was raised in the “shiny happy people” cult of IBLP (Institute of Basic Life Principles) in central Texas. She married young and was a trad-wife for 15 years\, homeschooling 6 kids and living as a missionary and pastor’s wife in a reformed Christian denomination overseas. Katie was forced to deconstruct when the systems that promised to protect her failed to do so\, and she has spent the last few years working hard to find the path to healing for herself and her family.\nAbi Bechard is the oldest of 10 children and a homeschool alumna. Her deconstruction from the CREC (Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches) began in earnest after abuse was discovered in her family of origin and her body and mind broke down in motherhood. Now she owns a local third space and is passionate about healing through communal embodiment.\n\nAll are survivors of evangelical/fundamentalist sects. In an evangelical/fundamentalist context\, “survivor” can mean any number of things. In this context\, we use the word “survivor” to refer to anyone who has left a religious/spiritual context in which they experienced spiritual\, emotional\, sexual\, psychological\, and/or corporal abuse. Many fundamentalist sects\, especially\, teach corporal punishment and complementarianism (ie strict gender roles that includes male supremacy/control) as a spiritual mandate. These teachings often lead to domestic violence (DV) and intimate partner violence. Paired with a high-control and deeply authoritarian church leadership structure\, these teachings are particularly dangerous and often ignored completely within fundamentalist and evangelical Christian traditions. LifeWay Research — a leading evangelical research firm measuring needs in the church and culture — in its own 2014 study found 74% of pastors underestimate DV in their congregations\, 42% rarely or never speak about it\, and 62% provide couples counseling to DV victims – a practice DV experts consider dangerous or potentially lethal.

Magpie and the Tiger closed its brick-and-mortar location\, leaving its legion of fans clamoring for more\, so Jang and Choi have pivoted\, and have numerous ambitious plans for their new brand – including Hill Center cooking classes. \nRoren Choi began her professional cooking career slinging ramen at Momofuku DC. After a year of working there\, she moved on to become a cook at Tail Up Goat\, where she moved her way up quickly to become sous chef of this Michelin-starred kitchen. She eventually left and helped open their sister restaurant Reveler’s Hour as the pasta\, bread\, and butchery chef. \nCaleb Jang spent time as the sous chef of DC’s late restaurant darling\, Himitsu. Craving a desire to expand his skill set\, Caleb then moved on to become one of the pastry chefs at Seylou Bakery – inching closer every day to become better at making their famed whole grain croissants. Students will walk away with basic knowledge and instructions for how to create a linoleum block print from start to finish. By the end of class\, students will have a carved block and at least one final print to take home. Students should bring a few images to use as inspiration or may sketch their own designs. \nThis is an adult art class. \nAll materials will be provided: \n\nLinoleum block\nCarving tools\nBrayers\nInk\n\n“It was very easy and satisfying to see a good final result come together in just a few hours. I’m very please with what I was able to create!”  -Lauren \n \n  \nChristine Vineyard is a local DC artist and art teacher\, working with all mediums and a concentration in photography\, drawing and painting. She has her BFA in Art Education and a Masters of Art Education with a focus on curriculum writing. Christine is originally from Atlanta\, GA where she taught at an international charter school before relocating to DC to continue her teaching career. Christine has worked with all ages from preschool to adults and is excited about sharing her knowledge and love of art with others. \nA minimum of 4 students is required for the class to occur. Do you want to learn how to chop vegetables like a pro or learn the proper uses for certain knives? \nJoin Chef Wendi James in Hill Center’s kitchen as she teaches the essentials of knife skills for beginners! Learn the techniques of proper knife selection\, care\, basic cuts and proper form. The chef will guide you through breaking down common vegetables\, while you chop along side. This participation class is limited to 12 people. \n \nAbout Wendi: Wendi James received a Cuisine and Pastry Diplome from Le Cordon Bleu\nin Paris in 1997 and has completed advanced courses in chocolate and sugar from The French Pastry in Chicago.​ Since 1997\, her work experience includes stints at Restaurant Gerard Besson (Paris)\, Restaurant Daniel (New York)\, The Inn at Little Washington (Virginia)\, and Charlie Trotter’s (Chicago). \nWendi also holds a BA in Hospitality Management from the University of Illinois. DESCRIPTION:from  May 6 to December 16  @  6:00 pm - 8:00 pmRegister HereWhile fluency is developed over years\, confidence is built in the classroom. In this blended Beginner level class\, the instructor will introduce the alphabet and the basic tenets of the French language. You will learn numbers\, days of the week\, and months of the year and dive into a crossword puzzle to learn basic vocabulary. Repetition will be emphasized. \n\nThis class is also suitable for Intermediate I students who have a stronger grasp of the language\, but aren’t quite ready for full blown conversation. These students will explore French poetry\, singers\, and magazines as avenues to discover verb tenses (présent\, imparfait\, futur and passé composé)\, irregular verbs\, adverbs and prepositions.\n\nIn the class\, students will expand their French vocabulary and grasp on grammar\, while exploring Francophone cultures.
