SUMMARY:The Rise of Christian Nationalism: Film Screening and Panel Discussion with Former Church Members Featured in the Film
DESCRIPTION:from May 6 to December 16 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmRegister HereScreening Courtesy of CNN \nIn this CNN documentary\, which first aired on CNN March 22\, Pamela Brown examines the growing influence of Christian nationalism in American society; exploring how a movement once largely confined to the margins of white evangelical culture has gained new visibility and political power. \nCNN Chief Investigative Correspondent Pamela Brown examines the growing influence of Christian nationalism\, an ideology rooted in the belief that the United States was founded as a Christian nation and that its laws and institutions should reflect Christian values. Through immersive reporting and on-the-ground access\, the film explores how a movement once largely confined to the margins of white evangelical culture has gained new visibility and political power. \n\n“My reporting for this hour began early last year when I visited Moscow\, Idaho to interview Pastor Douglas Wilson. The response to that report was overwhelming and highlighted the need to better understand this movement working to redefine America as a Christian nation in the home\, in a marriage\, in schools and in government\,” said Brown.  “We embedded with a community under Pastor Wilson’s umbrella and spoke to women who have left the church and are now sounding the alarm. No matter where you live or what you believe\, what we learned is especially consequential at this moment.” \nIn “The Rise of Christian Nationalism\,” Brown travels to faith-centered communities where Christian nationalist ideas shape daily life\, education\, and governance. She sits down with prominent religious leaders who have helped build networks of churches and schools designed to instill a strict\, literal interpretation of the Bible. She also speaks with women who are former church members\, sharing accounts of religious trauma\, rigid gender roles\, and in some cases\, abuse within Christian nationalist communities. \n \nFeatured panelists\, all of whom appear in the film\, are: \n\nMargaret Bronson was raised in a theonomist cult in Southeastern Pennsylvania. She escaped at 19 and now lives with her husband and 4 children and has dedicated her life to helping others escape their cults. She is a co-founder of DeconstructionDoulas.com\, a peer support network that helps people leave high-control religious communities and supports those who have escaped.\nKatie Jennings was raised in the “shiny happy people” cult of IBLP (Institute of Basic Life Principles) in central Texas. She married young and was a trad-wife for 15 years\, homeschooling 6 kids and living as a missionary and pastor’s wife in a reformed Christian denomination overseas. Katie was forced to deconstruct when the systems that promised to protect her failed to do so\, and she has spent the last few years working hard to find the path to healing for herself and her family.\nAbi Bechard is the oldest of 10 children and a homeschool alumna. Her deconstruction from the CREC (Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches) began in earnest after abuse was discovered in her family of origin and her body and mind broke down in motherhood. Now she owns a local third space and is passionate about healing through communal embodiment.\n\nAll are survivors of evangelical/fundamentalist sects. In an evangelical/fundamentalist context\, “survivor” can mean any number of things. In this context\, we use the word “survivor” to refer to anyone who has left a religious/spiritual context in which they experienced spiritual\, emotional\, sexual\, psychological\, and/or corporal abuse. Many fundamentalist sects\, especially\, teach corporal punishment and complementarianism (ie strict gender roles that includes male supremacy/control) as a spiritual mandate. These teachings often lead to domestic violence (DV) and intimate partner violence. Paired with a high-control and deeply authoritarian church leadership structure\, these teachings are particularly dangerous and often ignored completely within fundamentalist and evangelical Christian traditions. LifeWay Research — a leading evangelical research firm measuring needs in the church and culture — in its own 2014 study found 74% of pastors underestimate DV in their congregations\, 42% rarely or never speak about it\, and 62% provide couples counseling to DV victims – a practice DV experts consider dangerous or potentially lethal.

Touting creative food\, it garnered immediate success and stellar reviews. Read The Washington Post’s Tom Sietsema’s review here: Washington Post Review \nThe name references Korea’s national bird\, a symbol of good fortune and the belief\, stemming from folklore\, of the tiger’s protective character. Magpie and the Tiger closed its brick-and-mortar location\, leaving its legion of fans clamoring for more\, so Jang and Choi have pivoted\, and have numerous ambitious plans for their new brand – including Hill Center cooking classes. \nRoren Choi began her professional cooking career slinging ramen at Momofuku DC. After a year of working there\, she moved on to become a cook at Tail Up Goat\, where she moved her way up quickly to become sous chef of this Michelin-starred kitchen. She eventually left and helped open their sister restaurant Reveler’s Hour as the pasta\, bread\, and butchery chef. \nCaleb Jang spent time as the sous chef of DC’s late restaurant darling\, Himitsu. Craving a desire to expand his skill set\, Caleb then moved on to become one of the pastry chefs at Seylou Bakery – inching closer every day to become better at making their famed whole grain croissants. From there\, Caleb opened Magpie and the Tiger as the executive chef and co-owner/operator and enjoyed many successes and rave reviews. \nComplimentary beer and wine will be served. \nPLEASE NOTE: Tickets are non-refundable. SUMMARY:American Roots Concert Series: Justin Golden & The Devil's Coattails
DESCRIPTION:from May 6 to December 16 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmRegister Here \nWe are delighted and grateful to welcome Justin Golden & The Devil’s Coattails to Hill Center for a rare performance. \nWith roots in the Mississippi Delta\, Chicago\, and the Piedmont of Virginia\, Richmond-based guitarist and songwriter Justin Golden’s origins are deeply vested in the blues. First picking up the guitar at age 19\, Golden did what came naturally and let the music flow through him. With an extremely diverse musical palette\, Golden aims to bring some new ideas to traditional blues forms. \nAt the age of 34\, a shocking Stage IV Cancer diagnosis in January of 2025 left Golden in a place of uncertainty\, fear and doubt. After more than a decade of intense touring\, recording\, and honing his craft\, Golden was forced to take an extended respite from musician life. He instead dedicated his time to manage chemotherapy treatments\, appointments\, and navigating the health insurance establishment. For most of 2025\, Golden had barely enough energy to play one local show each month. Although he still plays extremely limited tours as symptoms allow\, Golden’s treatment will be ongoing for the foreseeable future. Golden states that he “truly couldn’t have made it through 2025 without the support of [his] community.” \n \nThanks to all our sponsors: \n  \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Overbeck Lecture: Samplers\, Students\, and Sailmakers: A Portrait of Federal-Era Capitol Hill
DESCRIPTION:from May 6 to December 16 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmRegister HereFederal-era Capitol Hill has left few markers on our cityscape and few artifacts survive to tell its tale. Surprisingly\, a special group of textiles (usually ephemeral) created by girls (often invisible in records and histories) offers the best jumping-off point for painting a picture of 1810s-1820s Navy Yard and Capitol Hill populations.\nRecent research into these embroidered samplers reveals they were made by daughters of Navy Yard workers attending the school run by progressive abolitionist educator John McLeod and his wife Rebecca. The samplers and the research that followed will be the subject of the May 4th Overbeck Capitol Hill History Lecture.\nUsing church records\, maps\, property records\, paintings\, and the earliest city directory\, Alden O’Brien\, recently retired curator of costumes and textiles at the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) Museum\, will delve into the sampler makers’ families and through them the population distribution and demographics of early residential Capitol Hill.\nMs. O’Brien has lived on the Hill since moving to the District in 1989 and worked at the DAR Museum for more than 35 years.  While serving as an archivist at Christ Church on G Street\, SE\, she became fascinated with early 19th-century Capitol Hill and began mapping Hill residents listed in the 1822 City Directory.\nThe 7 pm lecture on Samplers\, Students\, and Sailmakers will be held at Hill Center\, Old Naval Hospital\, 921 Pennsylvania Avenue\, SE (www.hillcenterdc.org; 202-549-4172)\, on Monday May 4. Admission is free. Reservations can be made starting April 20. Seating will begin at 6:30 pm; the power point presentation will begin at 7 pm. \n

SUMMARY:At Issue: The Campaign to Undermine the 2026 Midterm Elections with David Becker\, Executive Director of the Center for Election Innovation & Research\, Democracy Docket Senior Reporter Matt Cohen\, and New York Times Reporter\, Nick Corasaniti
DESCRIPTION:from May 6 to December 16 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmRegister HereHill Center launched its new public affairs discussion series\, At Issue in April. The series examines the many critical issues we are faced with today.\n\nFact: voter fraud almost never happens in the United States. In ramping up election attacks\, will the Trump administration throw the midterms into disarray? David Becker notes that “this administration has gone out hunting for fraud with all of the tools of the federal government over the last year and they have found virtually none.” Yet\, as Matt Cohen reports. “The signs that Trump will try to intervene are too many and too big to ignore: the FBI raiding an election hub for 2020 ballots in a key Georgia county; an unprecedented effort by the U.S. Department of Justice to obtain private voter data from every state\, and the GOP’s all-in push to pass new voter suppression laws. Perhaps most worryingly: Trump has openly said the federal government out to wrest control of elections from the states and take control of voting.” And Nick Corasaniti has recently reported that “Facing the possibility of big losses for Republicans in the midterm elections\, President Trump has reiterated his unfounded assertions of electoral fraud. He has also begun speaking of the need to “nationalize” elections\, and for Republican officials to “take over” voting procedures in parts of the country. This rhetoric is often vague\, coming across as a hint of plan\, rather than an actual one. But a map of potential targets may be coming into focus and includes the swing states Michigan\, Georgia\, North Carolina and Arizona. Voting experts\, government officials and others have identified a host of conditions that could make those places ripe for meddling from the Trump administration or its allies.”\n\nSteps to limit potential interference in the 2026 midterms by the Trump administration are focusing on legal challenges\, state-level protective legislation\, and contingency planning by local election officials.\n\n\n \nDavid Becker is the founder and executive director of the Center for Election Innovation & Research\, a nonpartisan nonprofit supporting election officials and bolstering trust in election systems. He has more than 25 years of experience in elections\, having served as a senior attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice Voting Section in both the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations. Before founding CEIR\, David also led the elections team at The Pew Charitable Trusts. In his role as executive director\, David oversees the Election Official Legal Defense Network\, and he is co-author of ‘The Big Truth: Upholding Democracy in the Age of the Big Lie.’ \n\n\n\n\nMatt Cohen is a Senior Reporter at Democracy Docket where he covers voting rights\, right-wing extremism\, and threats to democracy. He previously covered these beats as an investigative reporter at Mother Jones and The American Independent. Before that\, Matt covered local politics\, social issues\, and arts at the Washington City Paper and DCist.\n\n\n  \n\n  \n  \n\nNick Corasaniti covers voting\, democracy and other election-related issues. for The New York Times. He also focuses on local races in state legislatures\, cities and county boards\, the kind of elections deeply connected to the functioning of American democracy. He has been covering elections — presidential\, congressional\, gubernatorial\, mayoral\, legislative and local campaigns — for The Times since 2011.
