SUMMARY:Mr. Mike's Music - Mixed Ages Classes (0-5 Years) 2026
DESCRIPTION:from April 24 to June 19 @ 5:30 pm - 6:15 pmThis event has passed Register HereEach week in Music Together® Mixed-Age Classes your babies\, toddlers\, preschoolers\, and the grownups who love them® gather for 45 minutes of fun-filled family music time. Your teacher will lead you and the other families in music activities ranging from lullabies to full-on jam sessions (with child-friendly instruments\, of course). It’s so much fun you won’t realize how much learning is taking place! \nYou’ll take home the award-winning music used in class\, along with an illustrated songbook and other resources. As you discover new ways to play with music all week long\, you’ll support your child’s music learning and overall development—even if you don’t think of yourself as a great singer or dancer. \nWhy Mixed Ages? \nChild development researchers discovered that grouping children of different ages in one class encourages natural\, family-style learning\, so Music Together developed the Mixed-Age Music Class. In this group music class in Washington\, DC\, everyone participates at their own levels: babies vocalize\, listen\, and observe; toddlers play and experiment; and preschoolers build confidence as they emerge as classroom leaders. Grownups are happy because everyone can come to class together. \n“My husband teases me because whenever I mention Music Together to anyone\, he always pipes up my next line which is ‘best money we ever spent.’ I truly mean it. Kudos to Ken and Lili for a program that outshines any other I have seen around.” —Kim\, Princeton\, NJ \nhttps://mistermikesmusic.com/classes.aspx?sem=51790#tabs \n \nmr

SUMMARY:Global Sounds on the Hill Featuring Qais Essar & Sonny Singh in Concert: SANGAT
DESCRIPTION:from April 24 to June 19 @ 5:30 pm - 6:15 pmThis event has passed Register HereCurated and hosted by iconic DC impresario and musician Jim Thomson \nWeaving together the ancient sound and haunting melodies of the rabab\, a 2\,500 year-old instrument from Afghanistan\, with bold trumpet lines and anthemic Punjabi vocals\, Qais and Sonny ground their music in ancestral wisdom and usher us into the future with their uplifting new sound. Drawing inspiration from hundreds of years old mystical poetry from the Sikh\, Sufi\, and radical bhakti traditions\, their music centers oneness and connection in times of increasing division and hierarchy.  Sangat is not only a meeting of diverse musical and spiritual traditions\, but also a reflection of using art as a vehicle for connection\, resistance\, and healing.  “Sangat is a term Sikhs use to refer to beloved community\,” explains Singh. “We often use the term to refer to the congregation in a gurdwara [Sikh house of worship]\, but to me\, sangat is something much broader. My beloved community transcends ethnic\, religious and national boundaries.” Essar adds\, “In this climate of increasing attacks on the marginalized\, including the communities Sonny and I are a part of\, we hope this new music inspires solidarity and unity.” \nAbout Jim Thomson: Jim Thomson is an independent DIY music producer based in Washington DC who specializes in booking\, live music production\, artist management\, DJ events\, and record releases. In Washington DC he operates an ongoing live music series called Secret Planet DC that partners with various venues\, foundations\, and musicians all across the city to produce unique\, intimate\, and meaningful performances. He also owns and operates the Washington\, DC-based boutique record label Electric Cowbell Records as well as holding down and curating all vinyl DJ residencies at The Green Zone\, Cana\, La Shukran\, Daikaya\, Le Mont Royal\, Eaton Hotel\, the DC Record Fair\, and other bars and restaurants in the city. \nJim is also a lifelong musician and promoter\, playing drums as a founding member of GWAR\, The Alter-Natives (SST Records)\, Bio Ritmo\, CSC Funk Band\, Time Is Fire\, and he currently plays drums and percussion with Motherf*ckers JMB & Co with Geologist from Animal Collective. One of the first concerts he co-promoted was a Bad Brains show in Richmond\, Virginia in 1987 followed by years of concerts including surf guitar legend Dick Dale\, Knitting Factory tours\, Marc Ribot\, Charles Gayle\, Negativland\, Medeski\, Martin\, and Wood\, and many others.

Kudos to Ken and Lili for a program that outshines any other I have seen around.” —Kim\, Princeton\, NJ \nhttps://mistermikesmusic.com/classes.aspx?sem=51790#tabs

SUMMARY:Whiting Writers' Award-Winner Clifford Thompson discusses his new book Jazz June in conversation with iconic DC writer E. Ethelbert Miller
DESCRIPTION:from April 24 to June 19 @ 5:30 pm - 6:15 pmThis event has passed Register Here\n“Clifford Thompson has skillfully captured in words a distinct era of American history\, the specific feel over time of two major cities (Washington and New York); an intimate glimpse of the complexity of race and masculinity; and the small details of family\, love\, ambition\, fear\, fatherhood\, and aging that make up a life. It is a charming\, quiet but powerful\, well-crafted collection.” \n—Dinty W. Moore\, author of Between Panic and Desire \n\nJazz June dives into the deeper representative moments of life—the moments of wonder\, hope\, fear\, uncertainty\, humor\, love\, and epiphany—that make up human experience. Through his reflections on literature\, music\, and film\, Thompson\, a Black American whose life is informed but not defined by race\, embraces Black culture while remaining defiantly himself. \n\n\nClifford Thompson is a recipient of a Whiting Writers’ Award for nonfiction whose essays and reviews have appeared in the Washington Post\, the Wall Street Journal\, Best American Essays\, Times Literary Supplement\, the 2024 Pushcart Prize Anthology\, and more. His books include What It Is: Race\, Family\, and One Thinking Black Man’s Blues\, which Time magazine called one of the “most anticipated” books of the season\, and the graphic novel Big Man and the Little Men\, which he wrote and illustrated. Thompson teaches creative nonfiction writing at Sarah Lawrence College and the Vermont College of Fine Arts. A painter\, he is a member of Blue Mountain Gallery in New York City. \nE. Ethelbert Miller is a literary activist and author of two memoirs and several poetry collections. He was given a 2020 congressional award from Congressman Jamie Raskin in recognition of his literary activism\, awarded the 2022 Howard Zinn Lifetime Achievement Award by the Peace and Justice Studies Association\, and named a 2023 Grammy Nominee Finalist for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album. In 2024 Miller was awarded the Furious Flower Lifetime Achievement Award. \nBooks will be available for sale. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of Korean flavors and its history\, cooking methods\, and their ingredients\, empowering you to recreate these dishes at home and experiment with your own creations. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from talented Korean American chefs and take your cooking to the next level! \nMagpie and the Tiger\, the beloved Petworth\, DC eatery\, opened in January 2022. Touting creative food\, it garnered immediate success and stellar reviews. Read The Washington Post’s Tom Sietsema’s review here: Washington Post Review \nThe name references Korea’s national bird\, a symbol of good fortune and the belief\, stemming from folklore\, of the tiger’s protective character. Magpie and the Tiger closed its brick-and-mortar location\, leaving its legion of fans clamoring for more\, so Jang and Choi have pivoted\, and have numerous ambitious plans for their new brand – including Hill Center cooking classes. \nRoren Choi began her professional cooking career slinging ramen at Momofuku DC. After a year of working there\, she moved on to become a cook at Tail Up Goat\, where she moved her way up quickly to become sous chef of this Michelin-starred kitchen. She eventually left and helped open their sister restaurant Reveler’s Hour as the pasta\, bread\, and butchery chef. \nCaleb Jang spent time as the sous chef of DC’s late restaurant darling\, Himitsu. Craving a desire to expand his skill set\, Caleb then moved on to become one of the pastry chefs at Seylou Bakery – inching closer every day to become better at making their famed whole grain croissants. From there\, Caleb opened Magpie and the Tiger as the executive chef and co-owner/operator and enjoyed many successes and rave reviews. \nComplimentary beer and wine will be served. \nPLEASE NOTE: Tickets are non-refundable. We apologize for any inconvenience.
