SUMMARY:Whiting Writers' Award-Winner Clifford Thompson discusses his new book Jazz June in conversation with iconic DC writer E. Ethelbert Miller
DESCRIPTION:from April 24 to June 19 @ 5:30 pm - 6:15 pmThis event has passed Register Here\n“Clifford Thompson has skillfully captured in words a distinct era of American history\, the specific feel over time of two major cities (Washington and New York); an intimate glimpse of the complexity of race and masculinity; and the small details of family\, love\, ambition\, fear\, fatherhood\, and aging that make up a life. It is a charming\, quiet but powerful\, well-crafted collection.” \n—Dinty W. Moore\, author of Between Panic and Desire \n\nJazz June dives into the deeper representative moments of life—the moments of wonder\, hope\, fear\, uncertainty\, humor\, love\, and epiphany—that make up human experience. Through his reflections on literature\, music\, and film\, Thompson\, a Black American whose life is informed but not defined by race\, embraces Black culture while remaining defiantly himself. \n\n\nClifford Thompson is a recipient of a Whiting Writers’ Award for nonfiction whose essays and reviews have appeared in the Washington Post\, the Wall Street Journal\, Best American Essays\, Times Literary Supplement\, the 2024 Pushcart Prize Anthology\, and more. His books include What It Is: Race\, Family\, and One Thinking Black Man’s Blues\, which Time magazine called one of the “most anticipated” books of the season\, and the graphic novel Big Man and the Little Men\, which he wrote and illustrated. Thompson teaches creative nonfiction writing at Sarah Lawrence College and the Vermont College of Fine Arts. A painter\, he is a member of Blue Mountain Gallery in New York City. \nE. Ethelbert Miller is a literary activist and author of two memoirs and several poetry collections. He was given a 2020 congressional award from Congressman Jamie Raskin in recognition of his literary activism\, awarded the 2022 Howard Zinn Lifetime Achievement Award by the Peace and Justice Studies Association\, and named a 2023 Grammy Nominee Finalist for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album. In 2024 Miller was awarded the Furious Flower Lifetime Achievement Award. \nBooks will be available for sale. A book signing will follow the conversation. \n\nDay-of tickets\, if available\, will be sold for $15

SUMMARY:Master Chef Featuring Magpie and the Tiger Chefs Caleb Jang and Roren Choi: Korean Street Food Basics
DESCRIPTION:from April 24 to June 19 @ 5:30 pm - 6:15 pmThis event has passed Register HereMagpie and the Tiger Chefs Caleb Jang and Roren Choi once again bring  their magic to Hill Center’s kitchen for a day of cooking and eating. Come enjoy a Korean family style meal with your neighbors and friends. Chefs Caleb and Roren will explore making a few classic street foods that made K-food so famous. Menu includes the sweet and spicy rice cakes\, Tteokbokki\, Kimbap\, aka\, delicious seasoned rice\, vegetable\, and seaweed rolls\, and finish up with the iconic fried sweet rice dough dessert\, Ho-tteok. Come learn the basics of the original Korean-style “fast food” that has now gone viral all over the world. \nChefs Jang and Choi will share their expertise\, offering insights into Korean culinary traditions and modern techniques. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of Korean flavors and its history\, cooking methods\, and their ingredients\, empowering you to recreate these dishes at home and experiment with your own creations. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from talented Korean American chefs and take your cooking to the next level! \nMagpie and the Tiger\, the beloved Petworth\, DC eatery\, opened in January 2022. Touting creative food\, it garnered immediate success and stellar reviews. Read The Washington Post’s Tom Sietsema’s review here: Washington Post Review \nThe name references Korea’s national bird\, a symbol of good fortune and the belief\, stemming from folklore\, of the tiger’s protective character. Magpie and the Tiger closed its brick-and-mortar location\, leaving its legion of fans clamoring for more\, so Jang and Choi have pivoted\, and have numerous ambitious plans for their new brand – including Hill Center cooking classes. \nRoren Choi began her professional cooking career slinging ramen at Momofuku DC. After a year of working there\, she moved on to become a cook at Tail Up Goat\, where she moved her way up quickly to become sous chef of this Michelin-starred kitchen. She eventually left and helped open their sister restaurant Reveler’s Hour as the pasta\, bread\, and butchery chef. \nCaleb Jang spent time as the sous chef of DC’s late restaurant darling\, Himitsu. Craving a desire to expand his skill set\, Caleb then moved on to become one of the pastry chefs at Seylou Bakery – inching closer every day to become better at making their famed whole grain croissants. From there\, Caleb opened Magpie and the Tiger as the executive chef and co-owner/operator and enjoyed many successes and rave reviews. \nComplimentary beer and wine will be served. \nPLEASE NOTE: Tickets are non-refundable. We apologize for any inconvenience.

SUMMARY:Natan Last\, The New Yorker Crossword Contributor\, discusses his new book\, Across the Universe\, in conversation with writer Stefan Fatsis
DESCRIPTION:from April 24 to June 19 @ 5:30 pm - 6:15 pmThis event has passed Register HereCalling all Crossword\, Spelling Bee\, and Wordle Fans! \nIf you are ever a little nosey and glance at the phone screen of the person sitting next to you on the train\, or in a café\, or in line at a store\, there is a pretty good chance that you will see them playing Wordle\, Spelling Bee\, Connections\, or solving the NYT Mini Crossword. We live in the time of game mania\, with crosswords being the ultimate champion. After a huge boom in popularity during the Covid-19 lockdown\, 36 million Americans now solve crosswords once a week or more\, and nearly 23 million solve them daily. Yet\, as longtime New Yorker crossword contributor Natan Last will tell you\, the seemingly apolitical puzzle has never been more controversial or more interesting. \nIn ACROSS THE UNIVERSE\, Natan demonstrates how the puzzle and its most popular makers like the New York Times — still the gold standard for word games — have in recent years been challenged for the way they prioritize certain cultures and perspectives as either the norm or obscure. At the same time\, the crossword has never been more democratic. A larger\, younger\, more tech-savvy\, and solidaristic group of people have fallen in love with puzzle solving\, ushering in a more inclusive rise to the kinds of people constructing them\, challenging the very idea of them and\, in fact\, what “normal” actually is. \nNatan was born deaf in his left ear and learned how to lip read to piece together words or parts of sentences he might have missed in conversation which was where his love for words and language began. He soon started solving crosswords in the back of class\, moving on quickly to writing them himself. At 16\, he got a Sunday puzzle accepted in the New York Times\, making him the youngest person ever at the time to do so. After high school\, Natan interned with famed New York Times crossword editor Will Shortz and now writes bimonthly crosswords for the New Yorker. \nNatan Last is a writer and immigration policy advocate. He writes bimonthly crosswords for The New Yorker. His essays\, poetry\, and academic research appear in The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, The Drift\, Los Angeles Review of Books\, Hyperallergic\, Narrative\, and elsewhere. He has worked for the UN\, the Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project\, the International Rescue Committee\, and as an advisor to the federal government on refugee resettlement. He lives in his native Brooklyn. \n  \nNatan Last Photo Credit: Saam Aghevli \n  \nStefan Fatsis is the author of Unabridged: The Thrill of (and Threat to) the Modern Dictionary\, published in October by Grove Atlantic\, and three other books: the New YorkTimes bestseller Word Freak\, about the world of competitive Scrabble; A Few Seconds of Panic\, about life in the NFL; and Wild and Outside\, about minor league baseball. In four decades as a journalist\, Fatsis has written and talked for Slate\, The Wall Street Journal\, NPR\, The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, ESPN\, Sports Illustrated\, and many other outlets. He lives in Washington\, D.C. \nStefan Fastis Photo Credit: Cindy Fatsis \n  \nBooks will be available for sale. A book signing will follow the conversation. \nDay-of tickets\, if available\, will be sold for $15

SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED: Master Chef Featuring Award-Winning Pastry Chef Rochelle Cooper of The Duck & The Peach: Delectable French Pastries
DESCRIPTION:from April 24 to June 19 @ 5:30 pm - 6:15 pmThis event has passed Register HereLearn Chef Rochelle’s secrets to making delectable French pastries. In this class we will be making pâté a choux dough used for cream puffs\, eclairs\, and Paris Brest. We will also make our own puff pastry dough and learn different shapes and ways to utilize it like palmiers\, cinnamon twists\, and turnovers.\n \nRochelle is a Rammy Award-winning pastry chef who learned to love baking at a young age\, making traditional desserts for the holidays with her mom. This hobby grew into a passion and she found herself at Johnson and Wales Culinary School in Providence. Her talent for the pastry arts was accompanied by a joy brought by sharing knowledge and Ideas with others as a teaching assistant. Professors encouraged her to pursue a masters in education and a year later she wrapped up a graduate program at Pennsylvania State University. It didn’t take long for Rochelle to miss the rush of restaurants and found herself in Washington\, DC. Breaking out at Range by Bryan Voltaggio and working under the renowned Chris Ford there. The whimsy\, science\, and storytelling of Minibar drew her further downtown where she spent years in the two Michelin starred kitchen and went on to become a research and development chef for Jose Andres team. Kat Petonito\, a former colleague and friend\, enticed Rochelle to join Eastern Point Collective (The Duck & The Peach\, La Collina\, The Wells) to begin her own pastry program. Inspiration for her desserts comes from nostalgia and seasonal ingredients available locally. Rochelle also has a knack for sustainability and always finding ways to cross utilize savory and bar preparations in her work. Her latest venture\, an Ice Cream Shoppe-Up that quite literally churns excess product into delicious flavors inspired by the team’s childhood favorites. As a new mom\, Rochelle has seen the struggles that parents and children face everyday\, she uses her platform to advocate for affordable and accessible childcare\, as well as a national parental leave policy with groups like MAPP and Regarding Her DC. Rochelle spearheads the Cookie Kindness Project\, a group of pastry chefs\, bakers\, and food writers whose exclusive cookie collections have raised over $50\,000 for local non-profits focused on kids and families.\n\nComplimentary wine and beer will be available. \nPLEASE NOTE: Tickets are non-refundable. We apologize for any inconvenience.
