Artist Bio:

Katherine Stewart Wilson is a self-taught Fiber Narrative Artist who uses fiber arts and quilts to tell stories and share her interpretation of history and social issues. Her art speaks to the intersection of traditional quilts, contemporary fiber art, and culture. Katherine began her artistic journey, after retirement, as a means to extend her past involvement in societal curiosities and wishful corrections-to provoke thought, raise awareness and inspire change.

Katherine works in an improvisational style making reflective art that explore themes of identity that incorporate a symphony of textures and colors. She can be found at her home studio in District Heights, Maryland surrounded by African and African American art. When not creating you will find Katherine reading from her substantial collection of books that have often shaped new art ideas or building her skills by taking workshops from renowned quilt and fiber artists.

Katherine has had the joy of showing in numerous national and international exhibitions including: both the Texas and Virginia Quilt Museums, Loveland Museum in Colorado, Dayton Art Institute, Dayton, Ohio and the Australasian Quilt Convention, Brisbane, Australia. Locally, Katherine’s works have shown at The Textile Museum, Mansion at Strathmore, Montpelier Art Center, Blackrock Center for the Arts, Sandy Spring Museum and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture, Baltimore, Maryland.

Katherine curated the first virtual gallery for Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) entitled Waiting. Her works have appeared in Quilting Arts Magazine, Sacred Threads and other publication, as well as Quilting Arts TV.
