Description
My project is to discover a new realist painting that builds on past artistic discoveries – past movements such as abstraction, modernism, cubism, and surrealism. Realist painting is only one method of seeing the world, focusing on superficial appearance. Realism can be reimagined in a way that recognizes prior painting movements. For example, the juxtaposition of abstraction on a canvas with realist representation is a format I have returned to repeatedly. Another juxtaposition is to combine a realist image with its “double” – showing the image from another angle, reversing the colors, or altering the orientation. Another update to the tradition of realism is to break up the painting surface with textures or other elements that accentuate the objectness of the painting – a more sculptural realism. The point of making realism in the context of years of art moving away from realism is because when disparate objects are in meaningful relationship with one another, new unity is created.
