The Classics and the Contrarians, wines from the old world and the new – the wines that are made in an old school way, and the boundary-pushing new school way.

Featuring Jill Zankowski, a DC guest Sommelier (from the New School), who will co-host with Michael (from the Old School).

Michael co-hosts a study on four wines – two with an emphasis on history, time, and benchmark winemaking techniques. The other two wines will be based on creativity, invention, and a quick exploration of “Natural Wines.”

Join us for a trip back to memory lane and a blast to the future!

This is a great class to enjoy wine, learn something new, then head out for dinner! Start your date night, friends dinner, or kick off your weekend solo with delicious wine and impress future guests with your newfound knowledge!

About Michael Scaffidi: Michael Scaffidi is an Advanced Sommelier who has had a long career as a Sommelier and Wine Director. He has has worked with many prestigious teams including those of The French Laundry, The Greenbier, Union Square Cafe, Jean-George. He considers his father as “the best host I know,” and credits him for teaching him hospitality.

In 2009, he helped open The Jefferson Hotel in Washington, DC where he created the wine and beverage program from the ground up. It was there that he curated a Madeira collection including over 50 offerings by the glass, the oldest of which dated back to the year 1720.

About Jill Zankowski: Jill Zankowski is a Pittsburgh native and DC transplant who stumbled into the wonderful world of wine in 2019 while working for Accor Hotels. Before finding a home in wine, Jill worked in sustainability, outdoor education, and government – all while serving tables to help make ends meet. To her, wine is the great meeting place of all the things she loves – nature, art, science, and bringing people together. Being surrounded by the incredible wine community of DC, Jill has had the opportunity to learn and explore expansive wine portfolios, showcasing famed classic producers, as well as newcomers breaking the mold.
In DC, Jill has previously worked as the Beverage Manager for St. Anselm, overseeing a 900+ wine program with bottles from every region and proce point. She is now the General Manager for Reverie, currently in charge of rebuilding their beverage and service programs after a devastating fire last August. She hopes to bring people in from all over to experience outstanding dining, accompanied by exciting, beautiful, and unexpected wines. Jill is currently studying for her WSET Diploma.

This class requires at least 6 participants.
