SUMMARY:Mr. Mike's Music - Mixed Age Music Class
DESCRIPTION:Each week in Music Together® Mixed-Age Classes your babies\, toddlers\, preschoolers\, and the grownups who love them® gather for 45 minutes of fun-filled family music time. Your teacher will lead you and the other families in music activities ranging from lullabies to full-on jam sessions (with child-friendly instruments\, of course). It’s so much fun you won’t realize how much learning is taking place! \nYou’ll take home the award-winning music used in class\, along with an illustrated songbook and other resources. As you discover new Mr. Mike’s Music – Mixed Age Music Class ways to play with music all week long\, you’ll support your child’s music learning and overall development—even if you don’t think of yourself as a great singer or dancer. \nWhy Mixed Ages? \nChild development researchers discovered that grouping children of different ages in one class encourages natural\, family-style learning\, so Music Together developed the Mixed-Age Music Class. In this group music class in Washington\, DC\, everyone participates at their own levels: babies vocalize\, listen\, and observe; toddlers play and experiment; and preschoolers build confidence as they emerge as classroom leaders. Grownups are happy because everyone can come to class together. \n“My husband teases me because whenever I mention Music Together to anyone\, he always pipes up my next line which is ‘best money we ever spent.’ I truly mean it. Kudos to Ken and Lili for a program that outshines any other I have seen around.” —Kim\, Princeton\, NJ

SUMMARY:Mr. Mike's Music - Babies Class
DESCRIPTION:The Music Together® Babies Class was created especially for families with infants under six months old. That’s right: It’s never too early to start our music classes! \nMaybe you’ve noticed that your baby responds when you play a song in the car or sing to soothe him. Babies are naturally musical—and you don’t have to be a great singer or dancer yourself to nurture their love of music. In this music class for babies\, your Music Together teacher will show you how you can support your baby’s music development through simple and fun activities. You’ll learn lots of musical ways to connect with your little one through music\, and you’ll bond with the other new parents in your class\, too. \nFamilies with infants are welcome in this class until their baby begins to crawl with confidence. At that point they can move up to the Mixed Age class. Older children are NOT allowed in this class at any time.

SUMMARY:American Roots Concert Series: I Draw Slow
DESCRIPTION:Critically acclaimed roots five piece I Draw Slow is currently touring their sixth and most exciting album to date. The band has consistently redefined roots music over four celebrated albums. Their latest release\, self-titled “I Draw Slow”\, reached #1 in the Irish Independent Chart. Their songs are streamed in the millions worldwide and the band is in tour-demand in the US\, UK\, and across Europe. Their distinctive blend of Irish and Appalachian roots composition has been licensed for film\, TV\, and advertising and is widely covered and recorded by other artists. The band recently appeared in a major Kerrygold butter commercial which featured one of their songs\, Swans. They are also known for their high-production videos featuring actors such as Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) and award-winning directors Hugh O’Conor (Three Musketeers) and Ronan Fox. I Draw Slow is helmed by siblings Dave and Louise Holden and is signed to Nashville label Compass Records\, a leading independent US label that nurtures and celebrates roots and folk music. The band writes unique songs that inspire love and loyalty. Fans regularly travel hundreds of miles to see their dynamic\, emotionally-charged performances that captivate audiences with exquisite balladry\, then brings them to their feet with high energy\, bass-heavy dance trad. Their latest album moves once again into new roots territory—employing traditional string instruments to deliver contemporary themes and alt-folk grooves. I Draw Slow has fully established itself in the North American acoustic music scene\, touring the US and Canada multiple times a year and appearing regularly at some of the biggest and most iconic roots festivals including Pickathon\, Merlefest\, and Grey Fox. \nQuotes: \n \nIrish Times …it’s how the band weaves the sound into something original that really impresses. On stage\, their instruments and vocals blend organically—giving audiences a sense of intimacy and connection to the performance. \n“I DRAW SLOW IS ONE OF THE MOST BEGUILING AND SINGULAR ACTS \nCURRENTLY ON THE CIRCUIT.”-THE IRISH INDEPENDENT \n“BLENDING THE TRADITIONAL MUSIC OF BOTH CULTURES WITH A\nCONTEMPORARY AMERICANA/CELTIC SENSIBILITY…I DRAW SLOW HAS\nCREATED WHAT SEEMS LIKE A FULLY NATURAL EVOLUTION.” \n— BLUEGRASS TODAY \n  \n \nThanks to all our sponsors: \n  \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Overbeck Lecture: Jack Jones on the building of the National Guard Armory
DESCRIPTION:The 80-Year Struggle to Build the DC National Guard Armory \n  \nHow the vacant land between East Capitol Street and Independence Avenue west of the Anacostia River became a center of civic and military activity is a history worth telling. Jack Jones\, historic preservation specialist at the DC Historic Preservation Office\, will do just that at the May 19 Capitol Hill History Lecture.  \nThe DC National Guard Armory\, immediately recognizable as a local landmark\, was not always at this location; its location and design was the result of decades of government decision-making. Erected as the first purpose-built armory for the DC National Guard\, which still occupies the building\, it is perhaps better known as a civic venue. Many Washingtonians have attended events under the barrel-vaulted drill hall – from watching the clowns and elephants at the circus to dancing to the music at inaugural balls. Despite being the only National Guard unit in the country which reports directly to the President with a federal mission to protect the nation’s capital\, there was a nearly 80-year struggle over building an armory. The history of the DC National Guard Armory reveals not only government decisions over use and design but also how it ultimately was occupied by the National Guard with a strong community use component.  \nSince joining DC’s Historic Preservation Office in the Spring of 2024\, Mr. Jones has been assisting in various research projects and section 106 reviews. He currently serves as project reviewer for the Emerald Street Historic District and the Capitol Hill Historic District\, the largest historic district in the city. Prior to that\, he was preservation manager at Historic Augusta\, Inc.\, a preservation non-profit in Augusta\, Georgia\, for almost three years. Jack earned his bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in political science from the College of Wooster and has a master’s degree in public administration from Augusta University with a concentration in urban planning and community development. \nThe Monday\, May 19\, lecture on the National Guard Armory will be held at Hill Center\, Old Naval Hospital\, 921 Pennsylvania Avenue\, SE beginning at 7:00 pm. Admission is free but a reservation is requested due to limited capacity. Reservations can be made starting May 5.  Seating will begin at 6:30 pm; available seats will be released to others beginning at 6:45 pm. The power point presentation will begin at 7 pm. If you have a reservation and are unable to attend\, please notify Hill Center (202-549-4172) so that another person can attend.

SUMMARY:At Issue: The Fate of America’s Cultural Institutions Featuring The Washington Post’s Philip Kennicott & Award-Winning Producer Kitty Eisele
DESCRIPTION:Hill Center launched its new public affairs discussion series\, At Issue\, in April. The series will examine the many critical issues we are faced with today. Kennicott and Eisele will address the growing challenges confronting and impacting America’s cultural institutions\, including museums\, performing arts centers\, libraries\, arts funding\, and public broadcasting. \nIn a recent Post article titled “Yes\, Donald Trump could destroy the Kennedy Center. Or worse\,” Kennicott wrote\, “Until a week ago\, it was unthinkable that the president of the United States would take direct control of the nonpartisan Kennedy Center for the Arts\, fire board members not deemed personally loyal to him\, replace them with members of his inner circle and install a widely disliked political operative with little experience in the arts as interim director. But now the thought has been thought\, so two more previously unthinkable things must also be considered: Can Donald Trump destroy the Kennedy Center? Or will he use it in the usual way that authoritarians have used the arts in the past\, as a vehicle for Trumpian propaganda?” \nPhilip Kennicott is the Pulitzer Prize-winning art and architecture critic of The Washington Post. He has been on staff at The Post since 1999\, first as classical music critic\, then as culture critic. In 2011\, he combined art and architecture into a beat focused on visual culture and public space. \nKitty Eisele is an award-winning writer\, editor and producer. She helps America tell its\nstories on air and in public spaces. As editor of NPR’s Morning Edition and Weekend All Things Considered for nearly two decades\, she has set the news agenda for millions of listeners and contributed to\nnumerous cultural and arts profiles\, interviews\, podcasts and live events. As a film producer with Ken Burns\, she received an Emmy Award for her work on The Civil War series and led research for his documentary history of Congress for PBS. A Nieman Fellow at Harvard\, her work has earned Dupont\, James Beard and Peabody Awards. She teaches journalism at Georgetown and her essays on Washington life\nhave appeared on NPR and in The Washington Post. Her most recent project is Twenty-Four Seven: A Podcast About Caregiving\, inspired by her experience caring for her father\, Al Eisele\, a longtime Washington journalist\, in the final years of his life.
