SUMMARY:Mr. Mike's Music - Mixed Ages Classes (0-5 Years) 2026
DESCRIPTION:Each week in Music Together® Mixed-Age Classes your babies\, toddlers\, preschoolers\, and the grownups who love them® gather for 45 minutes of fun-filled family music time. Your teacher will lead you and the other families in music activities ranging from lullabies to full-on jam sessions (with child-friendly instruments\, of course). It’s so much fun you won’t realize how much learning is taking place! \nYou’ll take home the award-winning music used in class\, along with an illustrated songbook and other resources. As you discover new ways to play with music all week long\, you’ll support your child’s music learning and overall development—even if you don’t think of yourself as a great singer or dancer. \nWhy Mixed Ages? \nChild development researchers discovered that grouping children of different ages in one class encourages natural\, family-style learning\, so Music Together developed the Mixed-Age Music Class. In this group music class in Washington\, DC\, everyone participates at their own levels: babies vocalize\, listen\, and observe; toddlers play and experiment; and preschoolers build confidence as they emerge as classroom leaders. Grownups are happy because everyone can come to class together. \n“My husband teases me because whenever I mention Music Together to anyone\, he always pipes up my next line which is ‘best money we ever spent.’ I truly mean it. Kudos to Ken and Lili for a program that outshines any other I have seen around.” —Kim\, Princeton\, NJ \nhttps://mistermikesmusic.com/classes.aspx?sem=51790#tabs \n \nmr

SUMMARY:Ron Charles\, Former Washington Post Book Critic: A Tipping Point in US Books & Letters
DESCRIPTION:This conversation is a part of Hill Center’s Life of a Poet series. Ron Charles will be in conversation with poet\, editor\, and Life of a Poet curator and moderator\, Kyle Dargan. \nA recent New York Times article mourned the end of the Washington Post’s Book World as a major blow to literary journalism and an inflection point in America’s literature. The current state of books and letters has been marked by increased federal intervention\, including attempts to cut library funding and accelerated removal of books on gender and diversity from school libraries. Federal efforts have targeted library funding\, though court challenges have temporarily blocked some initiatives. Meanwhile\, a push for “patriotic education” and removal of certain materials in school libraries on military bases has occurred. \nThere is a perfect symmetry to this conversation between Ron and Kyle. On  April 10\, 2013 Hill Center launched its Life of a Poet series in partnership with the Library of Congress and The Washington Post. Ron was our first moderator and his first guest was poet Elizabeth Alexander. Following the COVID-19 pandemic\, Hill Center resurrected the series on September 14\, 2023 with Kyle Dargan moderating and curating the series. Elizabeth Alexander was his first guest. \nRon Charles has been a book critic for three decades. He began his career as editor of the book section at The Christian Science Monitor. In 2005\, he moved to The Washington Post\, where he served as the paper’s book section editor and a book reviewer. For six years\, he created “The Book Report” for CBS Sunday Morning. \nIn 2009\, he won the National Book Critics Circle’s Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing. He also won first place for Arts & Entertainment commentary from the Society for Features Journalism and served as a judge for the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction. \nFor years\, Charles has interviewed many of the nation’s leading poets in a series co-sponsored by Hill Center and the Library of Congress. \nHe now writes about books and literary culture on Substack at RonCharles.substack.com  \nKyle Dargan is the author of the poetry collection Anagnorisis (TriQuarterly/Northwestern UP\, 2018)\, which was awarded the 2019 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize and longlisted for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in poetry. His four previous collections\, Honest Engine (2015)\, Logorrhea Dementia (2010)\, Bouquet of Hungers (2007) and The Listening (2003)–were all published by the University of Georgia Press. For his work\, he has received the Cave Canem Poetry Prize\, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award\, and grants from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. His books have also been finalists for the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award and the Eric Hoffer Awards Grand Prize. Dargan has partnered with the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities to produce poetry programming at the White House and Library of Congress. He’s worked with and supports a number of youth writing organizations\, such as 826DC\, Writopia Lab\, Young Writers Workshop and the Dodge Poetry high schools program. He is currently an Associate Professor of literature and Asst. Director of creative writing at American University\, as well as the founder and editor of POST NO ILLS magazine. He also works as a Managing Editor for Janelle Monae’s creative company\, Wondaland. Originally from Newark\, New Jersey\, Dargan is a graduate of Saint Benedict’s Prep\, The University of Virginia and Indiana University.

SUMMARY:Overbeck Lecture: Samplers\, Students\, and Sailmakers: A Portrait of Federal-Era Capitol Hill
DESCRIPTION:Federal-era Capitol Hill has left few markers on our cityscape and few artifacts survive to tell its tale. Surprisingly\, a special group of textiles (usually ephemeral) created by girls (often invisible in records and histories) offers the best jumping-off point for painting a picture of 1810s-1820s Navy Yard and Capitol Hill populations.\nRecent research into these embroidered samplers reveals they were made by daughters of Navy Yard workers attending the school run by progressive abolitionist educator John McLeod and his wife Rebecca. The samplers and the research that followed will be the subject of the May 4th Overbeck Capitol Hill History Lecture.\nUsing church records\, maps\, property records\, paintings\, and the earliest city directory\, Alden O’Brien\, recently retired curator of costumes and textiles at the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) Museum\, will delve into the sampler makers’ families and through them the population distribution and demographics of early residential Capitol Hill.\nMs. O’Brien has lived on the Hill since moving to the District in 1989 and worked at the DAR Museum for more than 35 years.  While serving as an archivist at Christ Church on G Street\, SE\, she became fascinated with early 19th-century Capitol Hill and began mapping Hill residents listed in the 1822 City Directory.\nThe 7 pm lecture on Samplers\, Students\, and Sailmakers will be held at Hill Center\, Old Naval Hospital\, 921 Pennsylvania Avenue\, SE (www.hillcenterdc.org; 202-549-4172)\, on Monday May 4. Admission is free. Reservations can be made starting April 20. Seating will begin at 6:30 pm; the power point presentation will begin at 7 pm. \n

SUMMARY:American Roots Concert Series: Justin Golden & The Devil's Coattails
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted and grateful to welcome Justin Golden & The Devil’s Coattails to Hill Center for a rare performance. \nWith roots in the Mississippi Delta\, Chicago\, and the Piedmont of Virginia\, Richmond-based guitarist and songwriter Justin Golden’s origins are deeply vested in the blues. First picking up the guitar at age 19\, Golden did what came naturally and let the music flow through him. With an extremely diverse musical palette\, Golden aims to bring some new ideas to traditional blues forms. \nAt the age of 34\, a shocking Stage IV Cancer diagnosis in January of 2025 left Golden in a place of uncertainty\, fear and doubt. After more than a decade of intense touring\, recording\, and honing his craft\, Golden was forced to take an extended respite from musician life. He instead dedicated his time to manage chemotherapy treatments\, appointments\, and navigating the health insurance establishment. For most of 2025\, Golden had barely enough energy to play one local show each month. Although he still plays extremely limited tours as symptoms allow\, Golden’s treatment will be ongoing for the foreseeable future. Golden states that he “truly couldn’t have made it through 2025 without the support of [his] community.” \n \nThanks to all our sponsors: \n  \n\n\n
