SUMMARY:Sake for Whiskey Lovers: Rich\, Aged\, and Woody Sakes
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nAre you a whiskey drinker but want to branch out? Most people are familiar with clean and crisp sakes\, but many types of sake can mirror the flavors found in your favorite whiskeys! \nThis class will highlight three different sakes that showcase one of the defining characteristics of whiskey: wood\, aging\, and intensity. You’ll be able to taste through a unique\, Japanese twist on these factors – think native Japanese cedar\, aging in hot and humid Japanese temperatures\, and sakes with large ABVs that barely stay under the legal limit. \nScott Movens\, the founder of Sake District\, is a sake expert and educator based in Washington DC. He has multiple sake certifications\, including WSET Level 3 with distinction and Certified Sake Professional. Aside from professional qualifications\, he brews his own sake and takes frequent research trips to Japan to further his craft. \nScott Movens\, the founder of Sake District\, is a sake expert and educator based in Washington DC. SUMMARY:Overbeck Lecture: Kim Hoagland\, "Comfort and Conveniences in Capitol Hill Row Houses"
DESCRIPTION:Heating\, lighting\, and plumbing provide comfort and convenience to the modern home. How did the historic row houses of Capitol Hill accommodate these modern interventions? On Monday\, November 10\, at 7 pm\, during the Overbeck History Lecture at Hill Center\, Old Naval Hospital\, architectural historian and author Alison K. (Kim) Hoagland will highlight how people’s houses and lives changed in the decades after the Civil War. As fireplaces evolved into central heating\, lamps became electrified\, and outdoor privies moved indoors\, new designs of row houses were called for\, influenced by changing ideas about sanitation and the germ theory. While these conveniences became perceived as necessities\, they were not distributed evenly across economic class and geography. This examination of heating\, lighting\, and plumbing will look at the broader ideas concerning public health as well as the specifics of introducing new facilities into row houses with an emphasis on Capitol Hill. \nAlison K. (Kim) Hoagland is the author of The Row House in Washington\, DC: A History (University of Virginia Press\, 2023)\, recently released in paperback\, as well as The Bathroom: A Social History of Cleanliness and the Body (Greenwood Press\, 2018). Ms. Hoagland first moved to Capitol Hill in 1977 and has lived here for a majority of the years since then. She was the Senior Architectural Historian for the Historic American Buildings Survey of the National Park Service\, and then taught History and Historic Preservation at Michigan Technological University\, where she is now Professor Emerita. She has written four other books on various aspects of the\nvernacular architecture of the U.S. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe November 10 Capitol Hill History lecture will be held at Hill Center\, Old Naval Hospital\, 921 Pennsylvania Avenue\, SE\, (202-549-4172)\, beginning at 7 pm. Admission is free but a reservation is requested due to limited capacity. Reservations can be made starting October 27. Seating will begin at 6:30 pm; the power point presentation will begin at 7 pm.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Fifty Years of Capitol Hill Poetry
DESCRIPTION:The Capitol Hill Poetry Group began on the Hill in 1975\, when a group of poets came together to share and critique their work. To mark our 50th Anniversary\, we are publishing The Other Side of the Hill—1975-2025\, the 3rd anthology of our poems\, and invite you to join us for readings\, refreshments\, and celebration on Sunday\, November 2 at 5PM. \nThe Capitol Hill Poetry Group formed in 1975\, when Sally Crowell\, of CHAW\, put Jean Nordhaus (author of 8 volumes of poetry\, but at the time a fledgling poet) in contact with poet and neighbor Shirley Cochrane. With two others\, they began meeting weekly in their homes to share and critique their work. The group\, with changes in membership and\, since the pandemic\, in venue\, has met regularly since 1975. \nIndividual members have published widely in poetry journals and authored numerous books. Current members include Jean Nordhaus\, a former director of the poetry programs at the Folger Shakespeare Library\, Patricia Gray\, who for many years ran the Poet Laureate’s office at the Library of Congress\, Mary Ann Larkin\, Patric Pepper\, and Greg McBride\, editor of the respected online poetry journal\, Innisfree. Featuring readings by Patricia Gray\, Charise Hogue\, Mary Ann Larkin\, Greg McBride\, Nancy Fitz-Hugh Meneely\, Jean Nordhaus\, Patric Pepper\, Noel Salinger\, Rosemary Winslow and Anne Harding Woodworth.

DESCRIPTION:Our mission every day is to spark creativity and connection. We do this through the restorative power of comedy\, storytelling and artistic expression. \n\n\n\n\nMore than 650 veterans return home from duty every day. But there isn’t always a homecoming party waiting for them. Transitioning to civilian life after service is often a challenging and isolating experience for veterans. ASAP classes combat that isolation. With ASAP\, veterans rediscover the bonds of their service and become part of a community with common experiences. Our alumni don’t just gain new skills; they gain confidence\, purpose\, and community.

SUMMARY:Stone Room Concerts @ Hill Center Featuring Alt/Indie Singer/ Songwriter Megan Burtt
DESCRIPTION:“Delightfully expressive\, expansive\, and pleasing\, with Witness\,\nMegan Burtt crafts a rich tapestry of colors and evocative textures.”\n– Guitar Girl Magazine \nCurated and Hosted by Stone Room Concerts Founder David Holiday \n \nMegan Burtt (https://www.meganburtt.com/) is an international touring singer/songwriter who has garnered national recognition. She has recently released Witness\, her first solo album in several years. The Colorado-based performer\, a past Kerrville NewFolk Competition winner who also performed with the all-redhead roots band Gingerbomb\, had been working on the project for years\, but hit delays with illness and false starts. She really began to unlock new levels in her songwriting when she decided to stop dancing around what she really wanted to say. “I discovered that’s a side of myself I like as a songwriter.\,” she says. “It’s become a sensibility that I know how to rest in.” \nThe results were a long time coming\, but they’re worth the wait. With unfailing honesty and vulnerability\, Burtt—who self-produced the project—wrestles with weighty topics like the burden of her own aspirations (“Drugstore Brand”)\, generational trauma (“Little Girls”)\, and the end of an important relationship (“Unfinished Business\,” “Good for You”). She also does it while mixing in doses of groove and pop smarts that make the lyrics hit even harder. Ultimately\, even though she addresses thorny topics\, there’s a sense of hope on Witness. “These songs are more real because hidden in them is the belief that there’s a silver lining\,” Burtt says. “I’m not ignorant to the shitstorm you have to endure to get there. I am a little jaded\, but I am really hopeful too. I enjoy the pursuit of it all.” \nAbout David Holiday: David Holiday — a lifelong music aficionado who in his youth performed with the Grammy-winning Texas Boys Choir and numerous youth orchestras and ensembles\, founded Stone Room Concerts together with his wife in 2012 to bring  intimate\, high-quality performances by local\, national and international independent musicians to the DMV area.  He has hosted more than 200 shows over the past decade in homes\, churches and other eclectic venues\, including for several years at Bikenetic\,a full service bicycle shop in Falls Church. Stone Room Concerts also serves as the fiscal agent for Niñas Arriba\, a charitable project of Latin Grammy-nominee Gina Chavez and their wife Jodi Granado\, which they set up to support the college education of young women in El Salvador and Central America.  In keeping with his long standing professional involvement with Central America\, Holiday is part of a team supporting the Maya Kaqchikel musician Sara Curruchich.  In 2023\, he had the privilege of serving as tour manager for Curruchich’s first-ever US tour\, including major venues and festivals in New York\, California\, Colorado and Illinois.

SUMMARY:Readin' & Rockin' Featuring GRAMMY-Nominated Musician Paul Burch in Conversation with former NPR host Melissa Block.
DESCRIPTION:Burch Discusses his new Novel Meridian Rising about Country Music Legend Jimmie Rodgers and Sings a Few Songs Too! \n“Jimmie Rodgers comes a-yodelin’ out of Paul Burch’s novel as if he were with us today. This is a tour de force of musical imagination.”\n—Roy Blount Jr.\, author of Save Room for Pie \n“Paul Burch has made up the truth of Jimmie Rodgers’s life better than any mere ‘facts’ could ever convey—even though you’d have to be in possession of a million biographical facts to pull off this kind of vernacular Huck Finn sleight-of-hand prose magic. I suspect the sleight-of-hand has something to do with the fact that Burch is a musician himself. He played his tune in the key of rollicky\, mixed in with all the sadness. From start to end\, I didn’t hear a false note on the page. From start to end\, this felt like such an authentic American story\, in sore need of a new telling.”\n—Paul Hendrickson\, author of Hemingway’s Boat \nKnown for “Blue Yodel (T for Texas)\,” “Waiting for a Train\,” and “In the Jailhouse Now\,” Jimmie Rodgers’s impact on American music is incalculable. Paul Burch’s bio-fictional tale of the short and poignant life of the “Father of Country Music” includes an imagined first-person memoir\, accompanied by spirited\, hilarious\, and often conflicting recollections of Jimmie’s family and music colleagues\, along with period black-and-white illustrations. \nBorn in 1897 in Meridian\, Mississippi\, Rodgers remains the only artist voted into the Rock & Roll\, Country\, Blues\, and Songwriters Halls of Fame. Generations of fans from B. B. King and Johnny Cash to George Harrison and Dolly Parton recall a Rodgers record as the first music played in their home. But his fame extended far beyond America to Africa\, Ireland\, England\, Australia\, and Russia. His disciples include Robert Johnson\, Bob Dylan\, John Prine\, the Clash’s Joe Strummer\, Jack White\, and anyone over the last century who has picked up a guitar to sing about life and the world around it. \nMeridian Rising is at once an immersive tale and a brilliant literary puzzle\, deftly blending history and fiction to create a vibrant alternative life-tale of the entertainer Howling Wolf called “my man that I really dug.” Written with the knowledge and sensitivity of a touring musician who has traveled many of the same roads and stages\, Meridian Rising engages the reader in a quest for truth while confronting the deceptions that live within our deepest relationships. \nPaul Burch\, a native of Washington\, D.C.\, is a writer\, composer\, and recording artist. As a musician\, Burch put out an album in 2016 about Rodgers that received widespread acclaim. Afterwards\, he moved on to other projects\, but Jimmie’s story had its hooks in him\, revealing itself not as another album but in Jimmie’s voice in prose. The result is a rollicking story of the kind of figure that has become a cultural archetype as well as a hero to some of the best artists of our time: Bob Dylan\, Howling Wolf\, Dolly Parton\, Jack White—the list goes on.  Burch has produced numerous albums with his band the WPA Ballclub\, including Last of My Kind\, a companion to Tony Earley’s best-selling novel Jim the Boy\, as well as a musical version of Meridian Rising. In addition\, Burch has produced recordings with Mark Knopfler\, Ralph Stanley\, Lambchop\, and Charlie Louvin\, which received a GRAMMY nomination. Learn more at paulburch.com. \nMelissa Block is an American radio host and journalist. She co-hosted NPR‘s All Things Considered news program from 2003 until August 14\, 2015. In August 2015 she became a Special Correspondent for NPR\, responsible for detailed profiles of newsworthy figures\, and long-form stories and series on topical issues.  She retired from NPR in 2023. Block began her NPR career in 1985 as an editorial assistant for All Things Considered and rose to become the show’s senior producer. From 1994 to 2002\, she was a New York reporter and correspondent for NPR. Her reporting after the September 11 attacks helped earn NPR a Peabody Award in 2001. \nIn 2008\, Block was recording an interview in Chengdu\, China\, when the area was struck by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake. Her earthquake coverage earned her a Peabody Award\, a duPont-Columbia Award\, a National Headliner Award\, and the Society of Professional Journalists‘ Sigma Delta Chi Award. Her  reporting from Kosovo in 1999 for NPR won an Overseas Press Club Award. \n

SUMMARY:American Roots Concert Series: New Dangerfield
DESCRIPTION:A century of forgetfulness and erasure has led to diminished public awareness of the Black string band tradition – and similarly diminished numbers of Black string bands. As of 2023\, a new Black string band has risen to carry the torch: New Dangerfield. \nNew Dangerfield was originally conceptualized by award-winning banjoist Tray Wellington\, who enlisted three other acclaimed Black roots musicians: multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Kaïa Kater\, bassist Nelson Williams (Chris Jones & the Night Drivers)\, and fiddler and singer Jake Blount. \nThe members of New Dangerfield cut their teeth at fiddler’s conventions and folk festivals\, and in the jazz bars of New Orleans. Community and tradition are the roots of their creative practice – but the branches have spread wide\, and are yet unfolding. Embodying the innovative aspects of the Black string band tradition\, Wellington\, Kater\, Williams and Blount are well-acquainted with the contemporary\, the experimental\, and the speculative. Deploying groove\, technical skill and historical knowledge in the revolutionary spirit of their namesake\, Dangerfield Newby\, New Dangerfield is on a mission to liberate the Black string band tradition. \n \nThanks to all our sponsors: \n  \n\n\n

SUMMARY:DC Cafe Aman in Concert Featuring Spyros Koliavasilis: Ambassadors of Sound
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Spyros Koliavasilis\, Hakan Keles\, Nicholas Mitrone and Firat Alpergin \nDC Café Aman invites you on a journey where time dissolves and borders become meaningless. DC Café Aman transmits the rich cross-cultural soundscape of Greece\, Turkey\, and the Mediterranean region\, celebrating deeply intertwined musical heritages. The band draws its name from the legendary Café Amans—cafes that thrived in the region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, where multiethnic musicians expressed their joys and sorrows in Greek\, Turkish\, and many other languages. In these spaces\, an extraordinary intermingling occurred\, with musical traditions flowing together like far-flung tributaries feeding the same river. These intense musical conversations were later carried across the Aegean to create a musical genre known as rebetiko\, essentially the blues of the Mediterranean\, which still moves audiences today. The group’s repertoire runs the gamut from the raw rebetiko sounds of Greece’s Markos Vamvakaris to the melancholic folk poetry of Turkey’s beloved Asik Veysel to more modern compositions. It’s proof positive that music is a living thing—alive\, persistent\, and universal in its ability to travel\, adapt\, and survive. But if you’re looking for museum-piece preservation\, you won’t find it here. This is living\, breathing music that demands a response. Some songs are mournful enough to break your heart. Others are irresistibly catchy and joyous enough to pull you from your seat. But all of them remind us that culture is—and always has been—a conversation\, not a recitation or monologue. \nDC Café Aman was inspired and founded by the internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Dr. Spyros Koliavasilis. The 2025 Maryland Heritage Award recipient is a velvety-voiced master of the oud\, cultural preservationist\, and storyteller. With his oud in his hands\, he weaves musical narratives\, each string vibrating with the sound of fin de siècle bazaars and underground tavernas\, but carried along with a brisk modernity. Abetted by his kemane (an Anatolian lyre called the Cappadocian Lyra) and the rhythmic pulse of his Greek Epirote defi (a small hand drum akin to a tambourine)\, Koliavasilis is a fountain of sound. Yet he’s no one-man band. Hakan Keleş’s passionate vocals and guitars add layers of complexity. Nicholas Mitrione’s timeless-sounding Greek bouzouki and baglama sparkle with spontaneity. And Firat Alpergin’s bass anchors it all with a contemporary pulse that keeps one foot firmly planted in tradition. Each instrument is beautiful to hear on its own. But the real magic is in how they speak to one another\, across space and time. The ancient resonance of the oud converses with the bright\, percussive snap of the bouzouki\, while the kemane’s soaring melodies interweave with modish guitar techniques. When the defi joins the electric bass to anchor the rhythm\, you hear centuries of musical evolution compressed into a single\, transcendent moment. It’s this unique instrumental blend—part coffeehouse intimacy\, part concert hall sophistication—and it makes DC Café Aman’s sound so distinctive. \nDC Café Aman shows us that cultures have always been fluid\, that music has always transcended boundaries\, that sharing joy and loss through song is a universal human need\, and that some of the most beautiful sounds ever created have emerged from the spaces where worlds meet and find common ground. DC Café Aman isn’t just reviving the past. They’re reminding us that we were never meant to be strangers. When you attend their performance\, be ready to dance. Prepare to laugh and cry. And let DC Café Aman help you remember what music was always meant to do. Music unites. \n
