SUMMARY:Master Chef Featuring Award-Winning Pastry Chef Rochelle Cooper of The Duck & The Peach: Delectable and Creative Fall Cakes
DESCRIPTION:Chef Rochelle returns following her smash hit\, sold-out Summer Tortes class to lead a part demo\, part hands on\, scrumptious fall cakes class. Menu features: \nSweet potato toffee cake with sugared pecans \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCaramel apple cake (Vegan) \n \nOlive oil cake (dairy free) with lemon curd and blackberries  \n  \nRochelle is a Rammy Award-winning pastry chef who learned to love baking at a young age\, making traditional desserts for the holidays with her mom. This hobby grew into a passion and she found herself at Johnson and Wales Culinary School in Providence. Her talent for the pastry arts was accompanied by a joy brought by sharing knowledge and Ideas with others as a teaching assistant. Professors encouraged her to pursue a masters in education and a year later she wrapped up a graduate program at Pennsylvania State University. It didn’t take long for Rochelle to miss the rush of restaurants and found herself in Washington\, DC. Breaking out at Range by Bryan Voltaggio and working under the renowned Chris Ford there. The whimsy\, science\, and storytelling of Minibar drew her further downtown where she spent years in the two Michelin starred kitchen and went on to become a research and development chef for Jose Andres team. Kat Petonito\, a former colleague and friend\, enticed Rochelle to join Eastern Point Collective (The Duck & The Peach\, La Collina\, The Wells) to begin her own pastry program. Inspiration for her desserts comes from nostalgia and seasonal ingredients available locally. Rochelle also has a knack for sustainability and always finding ways to cross utilize savory and bar preparations in her work. Her latest venture\, an Ice Cream Shoppe-Up that quite literally churns excess product into delicious flavors inspired by the team’s childhood favorites. As a new mom\, Rochelle has seen the struggles that parents and children face everyday\, she uses her platform to advocate for affordable and accessible childcare\, as well as a national parental leave policy with groups like MAPP and Regarding Her DC. Rochelle spearheads the Cookie Kindness Project\, a group of pastry chefs\, bakers\, and food writers whose exclusive cookie collections  have raised over $50\,000 for local non-profits focused on kids and families. \nComplimentary wine and beer will be available. \nPLEASE NOTE: Tickets are non-refundable. We apologize for any inconvenience.

SUMMARY:Iranian Journalist Fatemeh Jamalpour discusses her new book For The Sun After Long Nights: The Story of Iran's Women-Led Uprising
DESCRIPTION:“Personally driven\, historically necessary\, and politically salient.” —Kirkus Reviews \nFatemeh Jamalpour will be in conversation with Holly Dagres\, Senior Fellow The Washington Institute \nFatemeh Jamalpour is a feminist journalist banned from working in Iran by the Ministry of Intelligence. Jamalpour has worked as a freelance reporter for outlets such as The Sunday Times\, The Paris Review and the Los Angeles Times\, and has also held positions at BBC World News in London and Shargh newspaper in Tehran. She has two master’s degrees in journalism and communication from Northwestern University and Allameh Tabatabaei University in Tehran and was a 2024-25 Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan. \nHolly Dagres is a senior fellow at the think tank\, The Washington Institute. She is also the curator for the popular weekly newsletter\, The Iranist\, on Substack. Holly is Iranian-American and spent her formative years in Iran. \nFor The Sun After Long Nights\, co-authored by Nilo Tabrizy\, is a moving exploration of the 2022 women-led protests in Iran\, as told through the interwoven stories of two Iranian journalists. In September 2022\, a young Kurdish woman\, Mahsa Jîna Amini\, died after being beaten by police officers who arrested her for not adhering to the Islamic Republic’s dress code. Her death galvanized thousands of Iranians – mostly women – who took to the streets in protest in one of the largest uprisings in the country in decades: the “Woman\, Life\, Freedom” movement. Despite the threat of imprisonment or death for her work as a journalist covering political unrest\, state repression\, and grassroots activism in Iran—which has led to multiple interrogation sessions and arrests—Fatemeh Jamalpour joined the throngs of people fighting to topple Iran’s religious extremist regime. Across the globe\, Nilo Tabrizy\, who emigrated from Iran with her family and was raised in Canada\, was covering the protests and state violence in Iran\, knowing that spotlighting the women on the frontlines and the systemic injustice of the Iranian government meant she would not be able to safely return to Iran in the future. Though they had met only once in person\, Nilo and Fatemeh corresponded constantly\, often through encrypted platforms in order to protect Fatemeh’s privacy and security. As the protests continued to unfold\, they shared what led them to embark on an effort to document the spirit and legacy of the movement\, and the history\, geopolitics\, and influences that led to this point. At once deeply personal and assiduously reported\, For the Sun After Long Nights offers two perspectives on what it means\, as a journalist\, to cover the stories that are closest to one’s heart—both from the frontlines and from afar. \nThe title FOR THE SUN AFTER LONG NIGHTS\, originates from the song “Baraye” by Shervin Hajipour which went viral online and became a protest anthem for the movement in 2022. Hajipour is currently serving a three year and eight-month sentence for “encouragement to protest.” His story embodies how poetry\, a pillar of Iranian culture\, has historically been used for political commentary. This memoir follows that same tradition of using art as a form of self-expression and a political vessel. \nBooks will be available for sale. A book signing will follow the discussion. \nFatemeh Jamalpour photo credit: Joan Susie

SUMMARY:At Issue: The Politicization of the F.B.I. Featuring New York Times F.B.I. and DOJ correspondent Devlin Barrett and Former F.B.I. Agent Michael Feinberg
DESCRIPTION:Hill Center launched its new public affairs discussion series At Issue in April. The series examines the many critical issues we are faced with today. \nThe New York Times recently published an editorial board opinion titled\, “Trump’s Politicized F.B.I. Has Made Americans Less Safe\,” in which it argues\, “Only 11 days after President Trump was inaugurated for a second term\, his administration began a purge of the F.B.I. that now threatens some of the bureau’s most important missions. His appointees ousted eight of its most experienced managers\, including the division heads overseeing national security\, cybersecurity and criminal investigations. Several had worked on prosecutions of Jan. 6 rioters or had assisted in the various investigations of Mr. Trump\, and Emil Bove\, then the acting deputy attorney general\, said they could not be trusted to carry out the president’s agenda. \nThat was just the beginning. Over the past five months\, many F.B.I. agents\, including other top managers and national security experts\, have been fired\, pressured to leave or transferred to lesser roles. Hundreds have resigned on their own\, [including Michael Feinberg]\, unwilling to follow the demands of the Trump administration. Their absence has left a vacuum in divisions that are supposed to protect the public. Mr. Trump’s playbook for the F.B.I. is plain to see. He is turning it into an enforcement agency for MAGA’s priorities.” \nAs Devlin Barrett noted in recent reporting\, “The Trump administration has taken a host of measures meant to punish his perceived enemies. He has also forced out F.B.I. agents and executives and demoted or reassigned a wide swath of senior Justice Department officials whom Mr. Trump and his top aides do not trust. In firing scores of law enforcement officials based solely on Mr. Trump’s expansive claim of executive power\, the administration has flouted longstanding civil service laws meant to ensure the public receives professional services from government agencies. Many of those fired individuals have sued\, but the cases are moving slowly through the courts.” \nMichael Feinberg\, a top deputy in the Norfolk\, Va.\, office\, had ties to a former agent whom Kash Patel\, the F.B.I. director\, identified in his book as part of the so-called deep state. The moves add to the transfers\, ousters and demotions that have rippled across the F.B.I. as Mr. Patel and Dan Bongino\, his No. 2\, promise to remake the country’s premier law enforcement agency. The wave of changes\, current and former agents say\, amount to little more than retaliation\, underscoring what they describe as the politicization of the F.B.I. as its leaders seek to mollify Mr. Trump’s supporters. \nCritics say Mr. Patel and Mr. Bongino\, who are clear about their loyalty to the president and lack the experience of their predecessors\, are simply doing what they railed about for years under the previous administration: weaponizing the bureau. In a statement addressing his decision to step down\, Mr. Feinberg denounced the agency as an organization that had begun “to decay.” \nDevlin Barrett covers the Justice Department and the F.B.I. for The New York Times\, explaining how decisions are made inside these powerful and often secretive agencies that have played an ever-growing role in American politics. Barrett joined The Times in 2024 after covering federal law enforcement for more than two decades for The New York Post\, The Associated Press\, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. Barrett has covered many significant FBI-related stories\, including the Mar-a-Lago documents\, the Mueller investigation reaching into the Trump White House\, and the Jan. 6 FBI warning about extremism. \nHe is also the author of the book October Surprise: How the F.B.I. Tried to Save Itself and Crashed an Election\, which details the FBI’s role in the 2016 presidential election. The book recounts the enormously consequential role of the Justice Department and F.B.I. in the 2016 presidential election. Barrett was part of reporting teams that won Pulitzer Prizes in 2018 and 2022. In 2017 he was a co-finalist for both the Pulitzer for feature writing and the Pulitzer for international reporting. \nMichael Feinberg is currently a Public Service Fellow with the Lawfare Institute\, and a former Assistant Special Agent in Charge with the Federal Bureau of Investigation\, where he spent the overwhelming majority of his career combatting the People’s Republic of China’s intelligence services. During the course of his tenure with the Bureau he worked in the Los Angeles\, Washington\, and Norfolk Field Offices\, with additional time spent at FBI Headquarters. He is a recipient of the FBI’s highest recognition\, the Director’s Award for Excellence\, for his work serving as the primary architect of the investigation of Huawei Technologies\, a number of its subsidiaries\, and multiple employees. He was also nominated for the commendation two times previously\, both also focusing on East Asian matters. He was awarded numerous other Bureau honors and recognized by the Director of National Intelligence for his counterintelligence efforts on three separate occasions. Under his leadership\, numerous squads in multiple field offices successfully prosecuted Chinese intelligence officers\, their agents – including one working as a mole within the FBI – and multiple corporate entities facilitating the PRC’s intelligence operations. Toward the end of his career\, Michael spent time on counterterrorism matters\, as well. \nPrior to his service with the FBI\, he was an attorney in both private and public practice. He has a B.A. cum laude and J.D. from Brandeis University and Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law\, respectively\, and spent multiple summers at Middlebury College studying Mandarin. The opinions presented at this event are entirely his own and not that of the U.S. government.

SUMMARY:Global Sounds on the Hill featuring Estonian Talharpa Duo Puuluup
DESCRIPTION:Talharpa is a two to four stringed bowed lyre from northern Europe. Historically\, it has been played in the Estonian-Swedish areas and in Western Estonia\, particularly among Estonian Swedes who came to Estonia around the 10th century from the Swedish part of Finland. \nCurated and hosted by iconic DC impresario and musician Jim Thomson \n\nGlobal Sounds on the Hill is thrilled to present an intimate concert with the neo-zombie Estonian arboreal post-folk duo\, Puuluup.\n\nThe word “Puuluup” comes from the Estonian word for tree or wood: ‘puu’\, and ‘luup’ is a fortuitous re-spelling of the English word ‘loop’. The beautifully weird Estonian duo of Ramo Teder and Marko Veisson do a lot of looping. They’re exponents of a Neo-folk talharpa revival with a touch of surrealism and happy absurdity. Talharpa — that four-stringed Baltic bowed lyre that looks so similar to the Ethiopian krar — has a traditional susurrus sound that\, combined with effects and loops\, creates a fascinating backdrop for their songs.  The lyrics and melodies are a mixture of musical memories and improvisation\, and the inspiration is drawn from Finnish jouhikko repertoire\, Sahel blues\, chastushkas and other elements from musical traditions around the world. All kinds of random sources of inspiration are similarly important – unexpected excerpts from Polish TV series\, old Estonian punk\, and sweetbread from Vormsi Island.  Together with the band 5MIINUST\, they represented Estonia in the Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden in 2024 and made it to the grand final. Shortly before that they also released the joint album “Kannatused ehk külakiigel pole stopperit” ( “Suffering\, or the village swing\, has no breaks.”\n\n\nDuo Puuluup started in 2014 and its members are Ramo Teder\, a looping pioneer in Estonia (also known for his solo project  Pastacas) and Marko Veisson\, who has a background in anthropology. Their first album “Süüta mu lumi” ( Ignite My Snow) was released in 2018 and the second album “Viimane suusataja” ( Last Crosscountry Skier) in 2021.\nCrossing Talharpa with electronics\, Puuluup oscillates on the border of tradition and modern music styles\, flirting with world music\, underground and pop. Puuluup controls the vibrations of Talharpa strings through effect blocks and the looper and uses alternative playing techniques and sound generation options. Electronically amplified echoes\, knocks\, squeaks and scrapes are added to the soft hiss of Talharpa. The music is at times dance-pulsating and at times cinematic and dark\, creeping in and carried over from the chambers of the ancient Vormsi talharpists. It sounds like original creations impregnated with tradition\, references to punk classics and romantic neo-zombie post-folk with educational content. \nThe men themselves say modestly about their work: “Our main message in the context of folk music is that\, look\, you can do all kinds of things with the hiiu kandel\, learn the instrument and make your own music.” \nAbout Jim Thomson: Jim Thomson is an independent DIY music producer based in Washington DC who specializes in booking\, live music production\, artist management\, DJ events\, and record releases. In Washington DC he operates an ongoing live music series called Secret Planet DC that partners with various venues\, foundations\, and musicians all across the city to produce unique\, intimate\, and meaningful performances. He also owns and operates the Washington\, DC-based boutique record label Electric Cowbell Records as well as holding down and curating all vinyl DJ residencies at The Green Zone\, Cana\, La Shukran\, Daikaya\, Le Mont Royal\, Eaton Hotel\, the DC Record Fair\, and other bars and restaurants in the city. \nJim is also a lifelong musician and promoter\, playing drums as a founding member of GWAR\, The Alter-Natives (SST Records)\, Bio Ritmo\, CSC Funk Band\, Time Is Fire\, and he currently plays drums and percussion with Motherf*ckers JMB & Co with Geologist from Animal Collective. One of the first concerts he co-promoted was a Bad Brains show in Richmond\, Virginia in 1987 followed by years of concerts including surf guitar legend Dick Dale\, Knitting Factory tours\, Marc Ribot\, Charles Gayle\, Negativland\, Medeski\, Martin\, and Wood\, and many others.

SUMMARY:American Roots Concert Series: Brennen Leigh
DESCRIPTION:Brennen Leigh was perhaps fated to “walk the line” from birth. Born in Fargo\, North Dakota\, she was raised just across the state border in Moorhead\, Minnesota\, in an environment where country music was all-encompassing. “My parents listened to country music\, to the point where I didn’t realize there was other music\,” she recalls.  \n  \nProduced by musician Chris Scruggs (bassist with Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives)\, who’s the grandson of bluegrass royalty Earl Scruggs\, and son of pioneering country hitmaker and record producer Gail Davies\, Ain’t Through Honky Tonkin’ Yet follows 2022’s Obsessed With the West\, Leigh’s acclaimed collaboration with Western Swing icons Asleep at the Wheel\, which landed in the Top 10 on the Americana music chart upon its release. “Brennen will carry the torch for real roots American music for her generation\, and she’s the best one to do it in my opinion\,” says Wheel frontman Ray Benson. In addition to her extensive\, genre-defying discography which encompassesnearly a dozen solo and collaborative projects\, Leigh has penned songs for an array of artists including Lee Ann Womack\, Rodney Crowell\, Charley Crockett and many more. She has been hailed by the Grammy-winning Crowell as “a story-telling poet\, landscape painter\, passionate observer of the human condition and a cultural preservationist.” A live-show veteran\, Leigh was just 20 years old when she toured with bluegrass and country-music legend Ralph Stanley\, and hit the road with songwriter Guy Clark\, who proclaimed\, as only he could\, “Brennen Leigh plays guitar like a motherfucker.” Her dynamic and endlessly entertaining live shows certainly live up to that high praise\, showcasing not only her instrumental prowess\, but a gift for vivid storytelling filtered through her refreshingly dry wit. \n  \nNew album coming this October! \n  \n \nThanks to all our sponsors: \n  \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Basic Drawing Techniques: Drawing From an Image
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for adults who wish to start drawing\, but aren’t sure where to begin! We will be working on basic drawing skills and techniques over the course of four classes. Our first class will serve as an introduction – trying out techniques and becoming familiar with materials. In the second class\, students will begin a drawing based on an image of their choice with guidance along the way\, as they put what we have learned to use. The following classes will be used as a way to complete details of our drawing\, add finishing touches and a short critique of everyone’s work! We hope you will join us to learn something new and maybe meet some friends along the way! \nPlease bring a hard copy image to draw from. It should be 4″x 6″ or larger (ex. preferably an image of a person where they are the focus of the image). SUMMARY:American Roots Concert Series: The Pine Leaf Boys
DESCRIPTION:Louisiana’s finest\, four-time Grammy-Nominated\, world-renown Pine Leaf Boys have made a name for presenting their own inimitable brand of Louisiana music with youthful exuberance. Hailing from southwest Louisiana\, the Pine Leaf Boys\, known for their wild shows and thoughtful arrangements\, have breathed new life into Louisiana music\, reviving ancient songs and bringing them to the bandstand. Being described in the New York Times as\, “… the link that connects the young and the old generations\,” and\, “the best new\, energetic\, and fun Cajun band in a very long time\,” the Pine Leaf Boys play the old fashion dance hall standards while making a priority to bring many of the more obscure songs of past masters into their repertoire and play them with gusto.  \nThe Pine Leaf Boys have been invited on six occasions by the U.S. State Department to tour the world and present true music to Saudi Arabia\, UAE\, and Jerusalem in 2009 and again to Latvia\, Denmark\, and Slovenia is 2010 and a third time to the “Stan” countries in 2012 (Uzbek\, Tajik\, and Kyrgz). The variety and energy they release evolves through their shows\, bringing multi-faceted angles to Cajun\, Creole\, and Zydeco. Their mission is to present the beautiful\, powerful music of their ancestors and present the real Cajun music to the world and prove that it is still thriving and full of life. The Pine Leaf Boys have preserved the traditional Cajun sound\, while allowing it to breathe and stretch with those who play it.  Click here to see a list of the last 11 years of touring around the 23 countries and 47 states. \n \nThanks to all our sponsors: \n\n\n
