SUMMARY:Joseph Sassoon Discusses his book The SASSOONS: The Great Global Merchants and the Making of an Empire in Conversation with New York Times Writer Binyamin Appelbaum
DESCRIPTION:“As engaging as Sassoon renders the intricacies of business and religion\, the book is at its best when the family’s supercharged ambitions take center stage….Rags-to-riches stories may all be the same\, but it’s the way in which a fortune is lost that’s truly compelling. Sassoon’s detailed account of the decentralization of family power and the proliferation of descendants interested in spending but not making money is well paced and supremely satisfying….Joseph Sassoon’s book isn’t just a marvelous yarn\, it’s an Ottoman ‘Our Crowd’ that gives his family its due.”—New York Times Book Review \nA spectacular generational saga of the making (and undoing) of a family dynasty: the riveting untold story of the gilded Jewish Baghdadi Sassoons\, who built a vast empire through global finance and trade—cotton\, opium\, shipping\, banking—that reached across three continents and ultimately changed the destinies of nations. They were one of the richest families in the world for two hundred years\, from the 19th century to the 20th\, and were known as the Rothschilds of the East. \nMesopotamian in origin\, and for more than forty years the chief treasurers to the pashas of Baghdad and Basra\, they were forced to flee to Bushehr on the Persian Gulf; David Sassoon and his sons started over with nothing and beginning to trade in India in cotton and opium. \nThe Sassoons soon were building textile mills and factories\, setting up branches in shipping in China\, and expanding beyond\, to Japan\, and further west\, to Paris and London. They became members of British parliament; were knighted; and owned and edited Britain’s leading newspapers\, including The Sunday Times and The Observer. \nAnd in 1887\, the exalted dynasty of Sassoon joined forces with the banking empire of Rothschild and was soon joined by marriage\, fusing together two of the biggest Jewish commerce and banking families in the world. \nAgainst the monumental canvas of two centuries of the Ottoman Empire and the changing face of the Far East\, across Europe and Great Britain during the time of its farthest reach\, Joseph Sassoon gives us a riveting generational saga of the making of this magnificent family dynasty. \nBooks will be available for sale. A book signing will follow the conversation. \nJoseph Sassoon is Professor of History and Political Economy at Georgetown University’s Center for Contemporary Arab Studies and holds the al-Sabah Chair in Politics and Political Economy of the Arab World. He is also a Senior Associate Member at St Antony’s College\, Oxford\, where he also completed his PhD. Professor Sassoon\, whose research focuses on political economy\, economic history\, Iraq\, Iraqi refugees\, and authoritarianism\, has published extensively and is the author of five books. \nBinyamin Appelbaum is the lead writer on economics and business for The New York Times editorial board. He writes about public policy\, often through the lens of economics. In recent years he has focused on issues including economic inequality\, climate change and the housing crisis. Appelbaum examines what is broken and illuminates paths that might lead to a better place. \n  \n  \nJoseph Sassoon Photo Crefit: Michael Lionstar

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT! At Issue: The Erasure of Black History Featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning Historian Marcia Chatelain and New York Times White House Correspondent Erica L. Green
DESCRIPTION:Hill Center launched its new public affairs discussion series\, At Issue in April. The series examines the many critical issues we are faced with today. \nSince taking office\, President Trump has tried to reframe the country’s past involving racism and discrimination by de-emphasizing that history or at times denying that it happened. As historian Marcia Chatelain notes\, “When you erase history\, you make people more vulnerable to abuses of power.” \nErica L. Greem has reported on concerns surrounding President Trump’s executive orders and their potential impact on Black history education and recognition. Specifically\, Green has described how the orders have raised concerns about the possible re-framing of American history and culture\, which some fear could lead to the minimizing\, ignoring\, or even erasure of aspects of Black experiences and contributions to the nation’s past. In a June 20th New York Times analysis\, Green writes\, “The president’s decision to snub Juneteenth — a day that has been cherished by generations of Black Americans before it was named a federal holiday in 2021 — is part of a pattern of words and actions by Mr. Trump that minimize\, ignore or even erase some of the experiences and history of Black people in the United States. Since taking office in January\, he has tried to reframe the country’s past involving racism and discrimination by de-emphasizing that history or at times denying that it happened. Government websites have been scrubbed of hundreds of words\, including “injustice” and “oppression.” Federal agencies eliminated or obscured the contributions of Black heroes\, from the Tuskegee Airmen who fought in the military\, to Harriet Tubman\, who guided enslaved people along the Underground Railroad. School libraries were purged of writings by pre-eminent Black authors like Maya Angelou. Mr. Trump has assailed the Smithsonian Institution for what he characterized as “divisive\, race-centered ideology” in its exhibits on race. He ordered the renaming of monuments to honor Confederate soldiers who fought to preserve slavery. Taken together\, Mr. Trump’s actions are part of a larger cultural and political battle\, in which diversity has become an all-purpose target for society’s ills.” “Trump’s behavior around Juneteenth isn’t isolated at all — it speaks to how he views our community\, and everyone who doesn’t look like him or isn’t as wealthy as he is\,” notes Derrick Johnson\, the president of the N.A.A.C.P. “It’s why he’s stripping away our rights\, erasing our history and silencing our voices.” \n\nMarcia Chatelain is the Presidential Penn Compact Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Chatelain has received awards and honors from the Ford Foundation\, the American Association of University Women\, and the German Marshall Fund of the United States. During her twelve years at at Georgetown University\, Chatelain won several awards for her teaching and university service\, including the 2022 Georgetown Black Alumni Council Distinguished Leader Award\, the 2021 Georgetown Alumni James S. Ruby Faculty Appreciation Award\, and in 2018\, a Provost’s Distinguished Associate Professorship\, among others. In 2016\, The Chronicle of Higher Education named her a Top Influencer in academia in recognition of her social media campaign #FergusonSyllabus\, which implored educators to facilitate discussions about the crisis in Ferguson\, Missouri in 2014. She has held an Eric and Wendy Schmidt Fellowship at New America\, a National Endowment for the Humanities Faculty Fellowship\, and an Andrew Carnegie Fellowship.   The author of South Side Girls: Growing up in the Great Migration\, she teaches about women’s and girls’ history\, the U.S. Civil Rights Movement\, as well as black capitalism. Her latest book\, Franchise: The Golden Arches in Black America examines the intricate relationship among African American politicians\, civil rights organizations\, communities\, and the fast-food industry. Chatelain has received numerous awards for Franchise\, including the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in History\, the Hagley Prize in Business History\, the Organization of American Historians Lawrence W. Levine Award\, the Hurston Wright Legacy Award\, the Hooks Institute National Book Award\, the Alfred and Fay Chandler Book Award and the James Beard Foundation Award for Writing. \nErica L. Green is a White House correspondent for The New York Times\, covering the daily decisions comings and goings and newsworthy events involving the president\, the vice president and other members of his cabinet. Green is particularly interested in social policy and civil rights\, but covers a range of topics spanning domestic and foreign policy. She is drawn to stories that illustrate how the decisions made on Pennsylvania Avenue impact the American people\, and shape the dynamics of American society. Green joined the White House beat in the summer of 2023\, and covered the last year-and-a-half of the Biden administration\, as well as the 2024 presidential campaign. Prior to that she covered education. \n\n \nPresented in conjunction with ASALH (Association for the Study of African American Life and History\, founded in 1915 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson\, and Hill Center’s Benjamin Drummond Emancipation Day Celebration\, a series that honors America’s first liberated enslaved people with scholarly and celebratory programs that bring together a diverse group of prominent experts\, artists\, and public figures throughout the year to explore the Civil War and its aftermath from the African American perspective. The series is named in honor of the Old Naval Hospital’s first patient\, a young African American seaman.

SUMMARY:Foghorn Stringband: American Stringband Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Foghorn Stringband is the present day gold standard for real-deal hard-hitting genuine old-time American string band music\, with nine albums\, thousands of shows\, over 20 years of touring under their belts\, and an entirely new generation of roots musicians following their lead. American roots music is a diverse and never-ending well of inspiration\, and Foghorn Stringband continually and obsessively draws from old-time\, bluegrass\, classic country\, and Cajun music traditions in an ongoing quest to present a broad span of American historical music with an unparalleled youthful energy\, joy\, and virtuosity. \nEach member of Foghorn Stringband exemplifies the best of the roots music traditions from their respective native cultures. Caleb Klauder’s wistful\, keening vocals and rapidfire mandolin picking are as influenced by Southern roots music as much as they are by his upbringing in the sea islands of coastal Washington State. Reeb Willms hails from the wind swept Eastern farmlands of Washington. Her musical family and rural upbringing are on display with every note she sings and every heart she breaks. Nadine Landry’s roots lie in the rural backroads of Acadian Québec\, and her high lonesome vocals have delighted audiences the world over. Her earth-shaking bass playing is the rumbling backbone of the Foghorn sound. Minnesotan Sammy Lind\, simply put\, is the old-time fiddler of his generation whose tone and voice are as old as the same hills that gave birth to this music. Together\, these four have forged a sound like no other. \nThe band’s repertoire has expanded greatly in the past 15 years. They are as comfortable playing music at a neighborhood square dance as they are stirring a festival audience to a frenzy. Old time dance tunes rub shoulders with Cajun waltzes\, vintage honky tonk country\, and classic bluegrass….and it’s all rendered into a cohesive whole. Foghorn Stringband can often be found after a performance in a local pub or club continuing to play with equal energy and joy late into the night. \n

SUMMARY:Mr. Mike's Music - Mixed Age Music Class (Summer 2025)
DESCRIPTION:Each week in Music Together® Mixed-Age Classes your babies\, toddlers\, preschoolers\, and the grownups who love them® gather for 45 minutes of fun-filled family music time. Your teacher will lead you and the other families in music activities ranging from lullabies to full-on jam sessions (with child-friendly instruments\, of course). It’s so much fun you won’t realize how much learning is taking place! \nYou’ll take home the award-winning music used in class\, along with an illustrated songbook and other resources. As you discover new ways to play with music all week long\, you’ll support your child’s music learning and overall development—even if you don’t think of yourself as a great singer or dancer. \nWhy Mixed Ages? \nChild development researchers discovered that grouping children of different ages in one class encourages natural\, family-style learning\, so Music Together developed the Mixed-Age Music Class. In this group music class in Washington\, DC\, everyone participates at their own levels: babies vocalize\, listen\, and observe; toddlers play and experiment; and preschoolers build confidence as they emerge as classroom leaders. Grownups are happy because everyone can come to class together. \n“My husband teases me because whenever I mention Music Together to anyone\, he always pipes up my next line which is ‘best money we ever spent.’ I truly mean it. Kudos to Ken and Lili for a program that outshines any other I have seen around.” —Kim\, Princeton\, NJ \n \nThis time slot includes three separate classes per week\, starting at 9:00 AM\, 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM respectfully.

SUMMARY:Discover the Terroir: A Maryland and Virginia Wine Journey
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Wine Expert Leslie Frelow\nJoin us on July 19th for an exceptional wine tasting experience celebrating the unique flavors and craftsmanship of local wines from Maryland and Virginia. The afternoon is dedicated to showcasing the extraordinary character and diversity found in the Mid-Atlantic region’s viticulture. \nIndulge in a selection of five exclusive wines\, each meticulously chosen to highlight the distinct advantages of grape growing in our local terrain. From the rolling hills of Virginia to the lush landscapes of Maryland\, you’ll journey through aromas\, tastes\, and stories that define our regional winemaking excellence. \nOur discussion will dive into the unique climate conditions and soil compositions that contribute to the distinctiveness of Mid-Atlantic wines. You will learn about the innovative approaches and traditional techniques that local winemakers employ to harness these advantages. \nThe Wine Concierge is a minority-owned and woman-owned business founded by Leslie Frelow\, who previously worked for several years in the public policy industry for public and non-for-profit organizations. Following her passion\, Ms. Frelow’s beginnings with her wine-focused business\, Vino 301 Wine Concierge\, started in January 2013 with regional wine tours and special events programs. She holds a Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits (WSET). Encouraged and inspired by her industry peers\, she has had the honor of participating as a judge in regional wine competitions\, which included the 2019 Maryland Governor Cup and Maryland’s Comptroller’s Cup. \nThe excitement revolving around Ms. Frelow’s wine tourism and education programs\, as well as her dedication to supporting winemakers of color and women-owned wineries\, have inspired her to launch The Wine Concierge’s unique internet retailer business in the District of Columbia in 2020. \nMs. Frelow has also discovered ways to celebrate minority-owned winemakers and connect with like-minded wine enthusiasts through the podcast\, The Swirl Suite\, hosted by Sarita Cheaves\, Tanisha Townsend\, Glynis Hill\, and Ms. Frelow. The podcast (https://www.swirlsuite.com/)\, which features engaging interviews with wine professionals such as Melissa Schulte of Black Ankle Vineyards\, Eric Turner of Hip Hop Juice Box\, Burnie Williams of Chats Wine & Liquor\, and winemakers at the Essence Wine Festival\, serves as an inspiring resource for established and aspiring wine entrepreneurs. \n
