DESCRIPTION:Alice was raised by a family of professional singers and began taking Suzuki piano lessons at age 4. In school\, she joined concert bands playing the French horn and often landed leading roles in musical theater productions at school and in community theaters. Alice studied music at the University of Maryland\, College Park where she served in leadership positions in music honor society Tau Beta Sigma and the Mighty Sound of Maryland Marching Band. Now\, Alice performs and teaches as a professional vocalist\, piano\, trumpet\, and French horn player.\n\n\n\n\n\nAlice wrote original music for\, performed with\, and produced and edited music videos for funk Wammie nominee Strangers That Clique. She currently sings and plays trumpet and keys with award winning musician and climate activist\, Joshua Long\, and she collaborates and performs with Sly on the Bright Side and Dream City Brass. Alice fronts her new band\, The Melting Virgos\, in which she performs her original songs about climate justice and class solidarity.\n\nAlice’s love of music and focus on fun keeps students coming back\, excited to develop their skills. DESCRIPTION:Tai Chi Chuan is a formulated set of movements designed for body and mind. This discipline for health and serenity is also a complete system of self-defense and a martial art that emphasizes sensitivity\, serenity and flexibility. \nOur classes are conducted in a relaxed\, go-at-your-own-pace\, collegial spirit infused with the seriousness that the study of Tai Chi demands. Both beginner and intermediate classes are offered. Intermediate and advanced students learn push hands\, saber\, sword and spear. \nSifu Larry Hawkins\, a practitioner of Tai Chi and other Chinese martial arts for more than 30 years\, is certified to teach Wu Style by the Hong Kong-based International Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan Federation. He studied in China where the Wu family developed the tradition five generations ago and trains annually with Grand Master Wu Kwong Yu in Toronto. \nAll ages are welcome. Classes are conducted Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:15 to 8:15 pm and Saturdays from 9am to 12pm. \n

DESCRIPTION:Hill Center has partnered with Go Spanish Now to provide this Spanish course. \nThe purpose of this course is not simply to teach you about Spanish\, but rather to develop your language skills so that you can communicate successfully in the language. For that reason\, the course includes a variety of components designed to allow you to practice and improve your abilities in reading\, writing\, speaking\, and understanding spoken Spanish. This course exposes learners to a variety of cultural aspects in the Spanish-speaking world and in the Cultural Readings that are found in the workbook. \nOur goal is to give you the confidence you need to progress smoothly. With us you will learn how to maintain a basic conversation in Spanish for beginners. You will learn basic elements of Spanish grammar\, understand and use everyday expressions in Spanish\, and more. \nThe students will be able to see their progress very soon and enjoy the interaction in an intimate class setting of 4 to 12 students. \nFor this class\, please purchase a copy of Spanish Now Level 1 (9th edition) Barron’s editorial. Students are responsible for obtaining the book on their own and are encouraged to purchase it from the retailer that works best for them (Amazon\, local bookstores\, etc.). Please also come prepared with a notebook\, as it will be used regularly during class. \nThis is an 8-week course. In order to offer flexibility\, Hill Center offers the option to purchase 4 sessions for $199. She explores new ways to introduce Persian microtonal music to a wider audience\, experimenting with new sounds that connect tradition with contemporary music. Her performances have taken her to international stages\, including the Bill Gates Goalkeepers 2024 event\, where she played alongside the Grammy award-winning artist Jon Batiste\, and some of the most prestigious music festivals worldwide\, including GlobalFest\, Secret Planet APAP showcase\, Ragas Live Festival\, Montana Folk Festival\, the WOMEX (World Music Expo)\, Crossing Border Festival\, Le Guess Who?\, Pitchfork Music Festival\, Into The Great Wide Open\, Mutations Festival\, Feeërieën\, Fajr International Music Festival. DESCRIPTION:Filipino food used to be a fear factor. Now\, it’s always trending. In this class\, everyone will contribute as a community\, more like a family\, in preparing the celebration dishes in Filipino gatherings.  If we’re lucky\, we might do karaoke to make it truly Pinoy. And like any Filipino party\, there could be baon so bring a take-home container.   \n\nPansit Bihon (rice noodles with vegetables\, meat or shrimp)\nLumpiang Shanghai (skinny ground-meat egg rolls) with Dipping Sauce\nCalamansi Juice (Filipino lemonade)\n\nAbout Chef Wilma: Journalist-turned-chef Wilma B. Consul is the director of culinary\, outreach and media at ECO City Farms in Hyattsville\, MD. She also teaches team-building cooking classes for Sidewalk Food Tours. She received her cooking and pastry certificates from L’Academie de Cuisine and Carlos Rosario Charter School for adults\, where later she taught in its culinary arts program that included ServSafe (food safety and sanitation) and life skills. Her kitchen experience includes Susan Gage Caterers\, Centrolina’s Mercato and J. Chocolatier in Washington\, DC and Purple Yam in Brooklyn. For five years\, she has planned and cooked the Breakfast of Hope fundraiser for the homeless advocacy of St. Augustine\, the mother church of Black Catholics in DC. She also was executive chef of Fly by Light youth peace-arts retreats\, serving vegetarian and vegan meals. In 2023\, she received her master’s in World Food Cultures and Mobility from the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Italy.

Do you want to learn how to chop vegetables like a pro or learn the proper uses for certain knives? \nJoin Chef Wendi James in Hill Center’s kitchen as she teaches the essentials of knife skills for beginners! Learn the techniques of proper knife selection\, care\, basic cuts and proper form. The chef will guide you through breaking down common vegetables\, while you chop along side. This participation class is limited to 12 people. \n \nAbout Wendi: Wendi James received a Cuisine and Pastry Diplome from Le Cordon Bleu\nin Paris in 1997 and has completed advanced courses in chocolate and sugar from The French Pastry in Chicago.​ Since 1997\, her work experience includes stints at Restaurant Gerard Besson (Paris)\, Restaurant Daniel (New York)\, The Inn at Little Washington (Virginia)\, and Charlie Trotter’s (Chicago). \nWendi also holds a BA in Hospitality Management from the University of Illinois. You can find this talented Chicago native offering culinary instruction and planning events at various venues in the DC metropolitan area. DESCRIPTION:Hill Center has partnered with Go Spanish Now to provide this Spanish course. \n \nThe purpose of this course is not simply to teach you about Spanish\, but rather to develop your language skills so that you can communicate successfully in the language. For that reason\, the course includes a variety of components designed to allow you to practice and improve your abilities in reading\, writing\, speaking\, and understanding spoken Spanish. This course exposes learners to a variety of cultural aspects in the Spanish-speaking world and in the Cultural Readings that are found in the workbook. \nThis is a great class if you have a very basic knowledge of Spanish. Our goal is to give you the confidence you need to progress smoothly. With us you will learn how to maintain a basic conversation in Spanish for beginners. You will learn basic elements of Spanish grammar\, understand and use everyday expressions in Spanish\, and more. \nThe students will be able to see the progress very soon and enjoy the interaction in an intimate class setting of 4 to 12 students. \nThis is an 8-week course. DESCRIPTION:“Way of Tradition” Solo Performance & Masterclass \nYogev Shetrit’s solo performance presents original compositions that fuse traditional North African\, Gnawa\, and Andalusian music from his Moroccan heritage with contemporary jazz and Mediterranean influences. Through drums\, rhythm\, and live musical storytelling\, Shetrit creates an intimate and powerful musical experience that connects ancient traditions with modern improvisation. \nHis latest album\, “Way of Tradition\,” was praised by All About Jazz for “keeping its jazz roots while weaving global influences\,” and for blending Moroccan\, Central Asian\, and Mediterranean traditions into a unique and personal musical language. The review highlighted how Shetrit’s music transcends geographical and stylistic boundaries and noted that the drums function not only rhythmically but melodically\, becoming a central voice in the music. \nBefore recording\, the compositions were performed extensively in concerts and festivals worldwide\, where audiences responded warmly to the music’s fresh yet deeply rooted cultural identity\, connecting both to its originality and its traditional influences. \nYogev’s masterclass explores the rich rhythmic traditions of the Middle East\, Morocco\, and the Mediterranean\, and their influence on jazz and contemporary music. Participants learn core rhythm concepts\, how to orchestrate them on different instruments\, and how to integrate them into modern performance. \nThe masterclass is highly participatory with audiences joining through clapping\, body percussion\, call-and-response\, and group rhythm exercises\, creating an engaging and inspiring shared musical experience. \n \nYogev Shetrit is an international composer and drummer\, born in 1978. He earned his BA in Musicology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and was the founder and member of the internationally acclaimed Coolooloosh band. He has performed with notable artists including Chuchito Valdez\, Tia Fuller\, Arnie Lawrence\, Paulo Morello\, and Kevin Mahogany. \nA composer at heart\, Shetrit formed the Yogev Shetrit Trio in 2016 to perform his original music.
