About Katherine Maloney

Katherine Maloney is a studio artist based on a farm in Southeast Virginia. She received her BA in ceramics at Guilford College and has participated in artist in residence programs, including STARworks Ceramics and as an assistant at Peters Valley ceramics studio. Katherine has taught workshops regionally and exhibited work nationally at galleries and fine art shows such as the Smithsonian Craft Show. Her work bridges the space between sculptural and functional ceramics, where animals become the narrators of Katherine’s wonder for the natural world.

Artist Statement

In many ways, my ceramic work is simply about honoring the magnificence of wild animals on our shared planet. From an early age, I fostered respect and admiration for the natural world while growing up on my family’s farm in the lush and diverse landscape of Southeastern Virginia. Working in my home studio, I sculpt realistic animals who are singular sculptures or correspond with functional vessels and altered forms. Each animal is presented in gestures of significance and integrity, aiming to invoke an introspective response while the corresponding vessel serves as a stage and invites human interaction. Using porcelain and stoneware, each piece is wheel thrown, altered, sculpted and carved. Firing in both electric and wood kilns, I attempt to accentuate qualities of preciousness through glaze application or spontaneity of ash and flame.
