LA Johnson is a professional artist and educator in Washington, DC. Her work spans various media, including painting, murals, sculpture, video, animation, illustration, and comics. She is an art director and video producer at NPR. Her first fully-illustrated book called Party of One, came out last year through Chronicle Books. Class Overview:

Bang! Pow! It’s a comics class for kids! Learn to create your characters, build a plot, and draw your very own comic! Taught by a local professional illustrator and comic creator, LA Johnson. Each 2-hour session stands alone, but they build toward a complete comic book by the end of the residency. Come for one or join all four!

🟣 Sunday, September 7

🧠 Create Your Comic Book Characters
Design original characters from the ground up—personality, biography, appearance, and superpowers. Explore facial expressions, costumes, and sketch your first comic poses.

🔵 Sunday, October 5

📖 Story & Scene Building
Bring your characters to life in a short story. Learn how to create a dynamic plot with conflict and resolution. Learn how to lay out comic panels, use dialogue bubbles, and create action or emotional scenes in pencil.

🟢 Sunday, November 2

🖊️ Inking & Comic Page Design
Refine your pencil sketches and ink your comic pages, working on bold lines, contrast, and page flow. Create a title page and author bio for your comic.

🟡 Sunday, December 7

🎉 Add Color & Finish Your Comic!
Add color, finishing touches, and prepare for a group showcase. Artists will share their work with peers and families in a fun celebration!
