The Capitol Hill Restoration Society will present their annual Home & Garden Tour on Saturday, May 11th and Sunday, May 12th. While this sought-after event is happening, Hill Center’s building will serve as a will-call station, be open for the public to come and view our gallery spaces, and will host two FREE tours with Architect David Bell at 3:00pm on both dates.
Click HERE to sign up for the Saturday tour instead.

ABOUT THE TOUR: David Bell was the lead architect on Hill Center’s restoration over 10 years ago. Bell’s high-quality, 21st-Century rehabilitation successfully restored the Old Naval Hospital to its 19th-Century architectural grandeur. Specializing in sensitive historic preservation projects, Bell maximized reuse of the existing historic fabric, including most original windows, doors, floors, walls and radiators inside, as well as the exterior’s ornamental iron fence and railings. In this tour, you will get a true insider view from the man behind it all! He’ll also cover the original purpose of the building, the disrepair before 2012, his techniques in preserving the building, the historic people honored throughout, and how Hill Center thrives now with a mission for the community. No matter if you’re new to Hill Center or have been coming here for years, this is a chance to see the building from an exciting and new perspective.

ABOUT DAVID BELL: David Bell is an award-winning District of Columbia architect, involved in a variety of project types, scales and uses, including Recreation Centers, Educational Facilities, Parks, Libraries, Museums, Theaters, and mixed-use and multi-modal transportation centers. Critical skills include leading the public approval process, engaging communities in visioning, executing rehabilitations, adaptive reuse with creative accessibility upgrades. He has provided Section 106 review, DC Section 9B and documentation for historic properties. His skills and interest are focused on integrating technology and traditional construction, achieving superior results for resiliency while conserving energy, environmental, financial and historic resources. Mr. Bell is committed to DC and has served on DC Preservation League, Cultural Tourism DC and AIA DC boards and is founding chair of the AIA DC High Performance Building Committee. He recently served on the advisory panel for the MLK Jr Memorial Library Renovation.

ABOUT THE HOUSE & GARDEN TOUR: The building will be open for the CHRS House & Garden Tour on Saturday, May 11th from 4-7pm and Sunday, May 12th 1-5pm. You do need a ticket if you want to do the full Home & Garden Tour, which includes many stops around Capitol Hill. You can purchase tickets through the Capitol Hill Restoration Society.
