Description
A native of Philadelphia, PA, Imani W. Russell has worked in textile arts for many years. In the nineties, a convergence of incidents and interest, launched the creation of Indigo’s Friends Studio. As a studio artist for more than two decades, Russell continues the practice of up-cycling humble materials. With various hand stitches, she transforms fabric and found objects into sculptural figures, wall art, and utilitarian wares. She is inspired by the traditional textile arts and cultural crafts of the Black South. Japanese textile artistry also influences her work. Russell has exhibited in the U.S. and abroad. She has received numerous awards for her work and was a recipient of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation residency in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Imani W. Russell lives in Northern Virginia.
