Plate Tectonics
We loved this potter’s work and owned a number of his pieces, including this platter. With use, we broke a few of the pieces including this platter.
Reconnected with glued this one decorated our backyard fence. This past summer, with a new fence going in, I found pieces of the platter in the earth dug up for new posts. I played archeologist reassembling potsherds and loved the platter all over again. Sadly, not all the pieces reappeared.
A while ago I drifted away while cooking a pot of beans. By the time I noticed the burning smell the bottom layer of beans were cooked into a circle of char. It came out of the pan almost entirely intact. We glued the midnight disk to a piece of cardboard and referred to it as Pangea, for earth’s supercontinent of two to three hundred million years ago.
Somehow, these two things came together as Plate Tectonics: the platter as primordial ocean and fragmented carbon filling the missing opening, waiting to spread out into the continents we know today.

Description

After our 28 year old daughter died after a miserable 5 and a half months with cancer, I began working through grief by doing things to eggs/shells. Eggs, those quintessential repositories of the generative principle, seemed to call to me to interact with them, first with violence, later more kindly. Many became direct manifestations of my pain.
