Description

ARTIST STATEMENT OF LYNN SYLVESTER For as long as I could remember, I’ve been involved with textile and needle arts: knitting, crochet, quilt making, needlepoint, embroidery, and others. In 2010 I enrolled in the STARS (Senior Textile Artists Renaissance Society) where I was introduced to Shibori, a Japanese dyeing process involving various techniques to create patterns on fabric. I connected with fabric dyeing and found my artistic home. Shibori allowed me to explore line, color, shapes, texture, and composition. I subsequently added sashiko embroidery to my dyed cloths. A textile marriage was born. The art of textile dyeing is part science, part technique, and part serendipity. Once a fabric is untied or unfolded after dyeing, it tells me where it wants to go artistically. Often the fabric is cut up, reassembled and stitched over revealing its true identity.
