Maluchi Enyi – Vocational Apotheosis

$45,000.00

A monumental self‑portrait shows a massive stone figure seated cross‑legged. His beard, a dense forest of trees, embodies growth and entanglement. In his right hand he holds an X‑Acto knife, while his left combs through the living beard. Water bursts from cracks in his sternum, symbolizing vulnerability and release. Tools lie at his base, grounding the work in craft and persistence.

Description

Maluchi is an artist, native of Washington, DC, working out of a studio in Riverdale, Maryland. His practice centers on scratchboard, a medium he fabricates himself. Imagine the simple thrill of scratching away the metallic layer of a gift card — scratchboard works in a similar way, but with far greater complexity. First, he creates a vibrant oil pastel drawing. Then he coats the surface with a layer of ink. Once the ink sets, he uses sharp tools to scrape away the dark surface, revealing the colors beneath. This subtractive method transforms removal into illumination, where each mark brings light, depth, and contrast. His works are representational and figurative, often likened to visionary romanticism. Earlier pieces explored bonds, burdens, and connections, with chains as a dominant motif. Recent works depart from this, blending human figures with monumental landscapes on a megalithic scale. Colossal forms carved into terrain embody intimacy, vulnerability, and awe, inviting viewers into moments of touch, embrace, and persistence where body and environment merge into one shared journey.
