John Fowles, writer says, “trees are the most revealing messengers to us from all nature, the nearest its heart.” Nature is my north star, my spiritual being. Nothing Is better than a day or night spent outside preferably in a forest, by a river, or in the high desert. It makes my heart soar, and nourishes my artistic sensibility, and restores my spiritual balance. Living in the city, I am always searching for signs of natural life, and three of the photographs presented are from the Anacostia River, the US National Arboretum, and a local church. Sally Mann’s love of the south inspired the Va. countryside, and the light in the forest at the Great Smoky Park in Tennessee. I work with a manual camera that makes me slow down and search for the right settings to capture the light of the day. My favorite time of day is dusk when the day is fleeing and the night is coming. Spring is so worth while waiting for, after the dark of the winter, the burst of color of the Cherry blossoms restores my spirit; just as fall colors and migrations bring a sense of richness and gratitude for another year of growth.
