About Beth Sperlazza
Beth Sperlazza is a potter based in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She began pursuing art in high school, ultimately majoring in Studio Art at the University of Mary Washington in 2007. Upon graduation she started work as a pottery studio assistant at LibertyTown Arts Workshop, under the mentorship of owner Dan Finnegan. After four years of managing daily pottery studio tasks and teaching classes, Beth became the Artist in Residence at LibertyTown from early 2011 to early 2014. Upon completion of the residency, she set up her studio in the Ferry Farms area of Fredericksburg.
My current line of work is relatively new to me. It started with getting some time to play in the studio and experiment combining some ideas I had previously used in a new way. The strings of past work that this work combines are an interest in layering and incorporating printmaking techniques into my pottery pieces.
An area of tension that has been making itself known in this process is the consideration of imagery vs form/function and how to marry the two without letting one become dominant and losing sight of the other. With this in mind, I started in this new direction using very simple forms without much curvature or structural details, as those would cause practical issues when thinking through this particular surface decoration.
