Artist’s Biography

Joanathan Bessaci is a French artist who moved from Paris to Washington D.C. in August, 2016. Bessaci is originally from Lyon, France, where he began his career as a painter. He has shown his work in Lyon, Grenoble, Saint Etienne, Paris, Boston and Montreal in both group shows and individual shows.

Bessaci’s most recent work is based on maps. He uses French Michelin maps ranging from 1920 to 1970 and cuts into them to create portraits and other images. Bessaci chooses his maps carefully, integrating rivers, lakes, highways, parks, oceans and smaller roads into his images to highlight certain elements of his subjects. Each of his pieces are made up of multiple cut-outs which are placed on top of each other, with a layer of glass in between each map, to create depth and texture.
