Good in the Neighborhood: For Love of Children

This week, we continue highlighting organizations that were slated to participate in the 8th annual Volunteer Capitol Hill in May 2020.

For Love of Children (FLOC) has participated in Volunteer Capitol Hill since 2015. FLOC “provides educational services beyond the classroom to help students succeed from first grade through college and career. FLOC brings together students, volunteers, families, and community partners in proven programs that teach, empower and transform.”

Trynita Romeo, Director of Programs, kindly took the time to answer our questions about FLOC’s work amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

How has your organization pivoted in the midst of the coronavirus?
FLOC has implemented virtual learning services for under resourced Washington DC students.

What projects are your organization working on right now?
FLOC is offering one-on-one language arts and reading comprehension tutoring, grade specific study groups in language arts and math, daily electives and a weekly story time via Instagram. We are also supplying laptops for students in need. A significant number of college students are without adequate resources.

How are your volunteers assisting you at this time?
Volunteers are tutoring our students one-on-one as well as being guest readers during our weekly story time.

Are you currently looking for volunteers, either remote or in person?
FLOC is looking for remote volunteers to be guest readers (pre-recorded or live). We are also seeking volunteers to assist with our summer virtual learning services (tutoring, book club, DIY videos for families).

Interested volunteers can reach out to our Recruitment and Outreach email, rando@floc.org. Volunteers can also find more information on our website, www.floc.org. It will be updated regularly in the coming weeks for summer opportunities as well.
