Kevin Mitchell - Flood Land

Artist Statement

These are excerpts of a Flood Land series based on living next to a river in an age where climate and rising water is an ominous risk, looping through the mind’s subconscious. Corridors seemingly suggest passages of the mind where all ideas and fears flow, while watermarks on the wall trace the raising water levels, as well as lines of experiential growth, or of passing. Debris removal from the Anacostia River records a survey of sorts of salvaged objects, surplus cultural excesses, discards of life, the flood. As I’m looking at these things and painting, I began noting that many of these objects can be seen as rafts, or, perhaps, broken conveyances of escape: a detached door, an old tire, a well-worn ladder that’s also too short to extend anywhere, and an empty metal folding chair, meant to be temporary, but represents dialogue.

Artist Bio

Kevin Mitchell currently teaches Drawing, Design and Painting at The Catholic University of America, and has taught art classes for the past 20+ years in the DC metro area, including NOVA Annandale, and the Arlington Arts Center. His education includes a Master’s in Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, and he holds a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting from the University of Texas at Austin. Kevin has exhibited in Dallas, Philadelphia, Richmond, DC and NYC.
