Rindy OBrien - In the Glow of Memory

Artist Statement

This series of work features photographs of objects and places that beckon us back to simpler, calmer times and highlights my unique ability to evoke the magic of moments when time seems to stand still. My subtle approach to color, texture, and shading transform subjects ranging from antiques and trinkets to roses and national monuments into elegant works of art. And my choice of material is as important as my sharp photographer’s eye, as illustrated in my sepia-toned triptych “In the Glow of Memory” which uses shadow and space to call to mind a time gone by. The tone and feel of the triptych is enhanced by my fascination with and skillful use of a special Japanese paper from the Awagami Factory in Tokushima. The paper, made of natural fibers of Kozo (mulberry) and Hemp, is known for adding a sensual feel to prints. Nostalgia plays through the show in numerous ways. The pink roses of Capitol Hill and the roses surrounding the Virgin Mary outside the Basilica in Santa Fe are homage to nature’s nostalgic beauty. The numbered lobster buoys of Cape Cod and the numbers above clowns on Coney Island look back on earlier times with a mixture of joy and mystery. And “From Inside the White House” is now a historical remembrance of the lost beauty of White House gardens prior to the alarming Trump “renovations.” Each photograph has been printed by hand on archival papers.

Artist Bio

Rindy OBrien is a fine arts photographer, writer, and local community contributor based on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Her work focuses on clean, simple portraits of everyday objects, urban landscapes, and nature. Rindy’s professional background includes her time as the chair of the Capitol Hill Art League and as an active member of the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop community. Her photo collections—such as Kitchen Stills, Opening Doors and Windows, and local neighborhood scenes—have been featured in regional galleries. She is a regular contributor for the Hill Rag newspaper where she writes feature articles highlighting local arts, culture, and gardens. Rindy also served as the Vice President of Policy for The Wilderness Society and worked as a United States Senate staffer.
