Artist Statement
“Life in DC” is a solo exhibition of original representational artworks created from life (note: some were painted from my window view, my balcony view and from on site). The artworks exhibit the city’s ever changing landscape. These works consist of different media, such as oil on linen canvas, oil on wooden panel, watercolor, and watercolor with pen and ink. Further, my subject matter consists of cityscapes and waterscapes. My work displays past scenes of these areas as follows: southeast, southwest, northwest and the DMV (The District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia). For example, one SE scene of Atlantic Street and Yuma Street, starts out by showing the old Ferebee-Hope recreation center prior to the renovation of this location. It further exhibits the building of the new facility and ends on the tearing down of the old one (“Demolition”). Also, the 9th Street paintings display a before and after view of the area along with the paintings entitled SE’s Balcony View. Furthermore, SW, NW and the painting “DC and Virginia” all portray a past view. The works selected for this show give the viewer a glimpse of the city’s rich past accompanied by its ever changing characteristic. My artwork is created to be shared with locals first and then the world.
Artist Bio
Roderick Turner, is an award winning open-air artist whose murals have been recognized in Virginia and Washington DC. His paintings have been exhibited in numerous group and one- man shows throughout the East Coast, and he has artwork currently exhibited throughout Washington DC in public and government buildings. Turner has served as a panelist for the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanity (DCCAH), Anacostia Museum, and American Dreams. Some of the various honors and awards he has received include: Arts and Fellowship Grant 2025 DCCAH; PEFi Grant 2025 (DCCAH); Art Bank Program 2024(DCCAH); Best in Show, TFAA Regional Show, Alexandria, Va.; Commission for Langston-Brown Center 2020 Langston- Brown Community Center Association, Commission for Kimball Elementary in 2019(DGS); Public Art Building Communities Grant (PABC) in 2008; and Lila Wallace Reader’s Digest International Artist Grant 1993.
