Sharon Robinson - Six Degrees of Separation

The primary inspiration for my art is creating a visual expression of the elements of life that connect us as human beings. While I often construct purely abstract compositions focusing on color, pattern, and texture, most of my work incorporates some representational elements, as a way for the viewer to identify and engage with the piece. I am most drawn to themes addressing cultural integration over time, how we define ourselves in relation to others, and biases that cause misunderstanding. In this quest I frequently employ cultural motifs, symbols, text, and related representations of ethnic, religious, racial and other forms of social identity. None of us can claim to be pure anything – we are only the latest version of millennia of mixing, matching, migrating, and mingling. I layer materials both literally and figuratively to provide depth and dimension. This approach allows me to construct a visual interpretation of the richness of the fabric of life.

Artist Bio

Sharon Robinson is a mixed media artist specializing in abstract collage and assemblage currently residing in the Washington, DC area. Raised in New Jersey, she earned a master’s degree in urban design and community development from MIT and worked in the urban transit and planning field for over 20 years in Los Angeles and Portland, OR. Since 1999 she has been a full-time artist, muralist, teacher, and arts program contractor. She has exhibited in the DC region, as well as other east and west coast cities including New York, Seattle, Sarasota, Charleston, SC, and Norfolk, VA. Sharon teaches mixed media and collage classes in the Smithsonian Associates Studio Arts Program, The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA and Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Hyattsville, MD, as well as other regional venues. Her community activities include serving on the national Board of Directors of SCRAP, a network of non-profit creative re-use centers, a board member of Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, and as an appointee to the Arts Commission of the City of Mt. Rainier.
