Ebru Karayigit – Sunset over the Capitol

In this painting, I sought to capture a dramatic sunset sky over the Capitol building. The inspiration came from a real moment during an evening walk on East Capitol Street, where I witnessed a breathtaking sunset. I’m particularly fond of painting skies wet-into-wet, as the unpredictable nature of watercolor paint often results in surprising and unexpected outcomes. This technique also contributes to a more calming atmosphere, which I’ve intentionally incorporated into many of my paintings. I began by applying a single wet wash to the sky. After completing the underpainting, I added the silhouette of the buildings and other elements. To achieve harmony in my painting, I opted to use the darker versions of the same colors I used for the sky instead of directly applying gray or black paint.
