Volunteer Profile: Jeff & Judy Zippin

Jeff and Judy Zippin, usually referred to simply as “the Zippins” around here, have been volunteering at Hill Center for over eight years. Since 2011, they’ve helped out in our reception office, been a staple at annual events such as Volunteer Capitol Hill and Pottery on the Hill, and always bring the life to any party. The couple, who are almost always seen together, just celebrated their 47^th wedding anniversary.

While we’re closed, we’ve missed having lively conversations with the Zippins during their regular Tuesday morning volunteer shift. So, we decided to ask them a few questions to catch up.

What is your favorite memory at Hill Center?
Jeff: Caroling and singing with [Hill Center Executive Director] Diana on 8th Street

Judy: Helping to plan the first Pottery show and housing potters

How did you two meet?
Jeff: We were both students at SUNY Buffalo and met living across from each other in university town houses.

Judy: Zip’s dog “Uptight” was the matchmaker.

What’s your favorite place you’ve traveled?
Jeff: Africa and Paris

Judy: Africa-Botswana

What’s the best meal you’ve ever eaten?
Jeff: Dining at Michelin three-star Paul Bocuse near Lyon and meeting Chef Bocuse.

Judy: Dining at Da Ivo on our first trip together to Venice and sitting next to look-alikes of Marcello Maestriani and Sophia Loren. We talked for hours with them and they introduced us to the chef who kept bringing us desserts to sample.

What are you most looking forward to when life returns to normal?
Jeff: Getting together again with all our friends and going out to restaurants.

Judy: Getting to see our kids and traveling for our daughter’s wedding (maybe).

Anything else you’d like to add?
Hill Center has become an important part of our lives. Volunteering has allowed us to meet so many Hill residents, become friends with many, and feel truly part of a great neighborhood. We have also enjoyed working with the wonderful Hill Center staff – all top-notch. We miss you all!
