The process of painting has always been an enigma for me. It is as if I have to re-invent my approach with every new canvas. Of course, it is just such a challenge that makes painting a worthwhile endeavor. When painting visual attributes such as lines, shapes and colors must all be conceived and created, by hand no less. The appearance of the paint, the way it is applied and its resulting visual structure, is also important. And yet another daunting aspect of painting is knowing when the picture is finished, or more correctly, realizing when it is time to stop. Where subject matter is concerned, as a photographer by profession, I have traveled extensively overseas while on assignment and I find that the experience of visiting distant locations has become an important part of who I am. Consequently, many of these places have made it onto my canvases.
